Evergreen: Regular Housing

Although the districts of Evergreen vary greatly in architecture, purpose, and level of disrepair, its standard housing structure remains relatively similar throughout the city. In the year 692 of the Age of Calm there was a mandate put in effect by the College of Transmutation to solve the problem of housing-shortage within the city walls. It was decided to start expanding the city upward by adding floors unto already existing houses. This prompted a city-wide endeavor which took almost a century to nearly finish, mostly due to loud protests from the people living in the buildings that were transformed. Some homeowners were so protective of their houses that the buildings stand unchanged to this day. But for a majority of the city this project was completed successfully. Thus it was that the standard Evergreen house came to be born.   The building consists of three floors. The bottom floor has an area of about 40-50 meters squared (m2), the second floor an area of 35-40 m2, and the top floor an area of 25-30 m2. A staircase on the left-hand side of the building reaches the second floor, and one on the right-hand side reaches the third.

Purpose / Function

The most common division of the floors is for each to be the home of a family, while the bottom and second floor also serve as a storefront or workshop for its inhabitants. Some houses also see its top floor used for business, but because of its small size, this is the exception, not the rule.

Alterations

Every house has grown together with its district and its inhabitants. Many have added balconies, some have redone the entire upper floor into a terrace. It's not uncommon for a house to be entirely owned by a single business who has remade the entire structure into a tavern, workshop, or something of the sort.
