Jiisho Character in Arrhynsia | World Anvil

Jiisho (Gee-show)

Godess of Ancient Ways

Jiisho is one of the three remaining Voices. Known as the goddess of those with none, at the calling, she called none, but accepted those who were not called, but who sought a Voice to follow. Her relationship with her followers is loose at best. She is not inclined to meddle with the day to day affairs of her people, but instead grants them gifts and puzzles, tasks, which are designed to increase their wisdom and independence.   Jiisho is a goddess of the primitive essence of nature. She is harsh and unforgiving, dealing with foundational realities and urges of nature. She had little patience with Lameravis and his eternal search for beauty and harmony, and even less with Crwydryn who she perceives as flighty and irresponsible. It has been speculated by theologians of the All Father that Jiisho is burdened with a sense of responsibility for the uncalled peoples because they were left without a Voice when Sol her brother brought light to the worlds for their sake.

Godess of the Uncalled

Jiisho has been a major actor in the world stage of Arrhynsia second only in her longevity and involvement in the stories of the peoples to the All Father himself. She has a long association with the orcs, a fierce nomadic people, and gave to them Elysium, the World Tree in the time before the Betrayal (see The Banishment of the Dark). She also laid the burden of maintaining the weave on Yulasta, the ascended goddess of the orcs.   The gift of Elysium to the orcs has been the subject of many doctoral dissertations and is a study of unexpected behaviors. The primary mystery is of course why such a precious and beautiful gift is given to arguably the most barbarous and primitive of the sentient peoples. The most common interpretation is that it was granted in an attempt to civilize the untamable ferocity of the orcs. A small minority of scholars believe that the gifting of Elysium by Jiisho to the orcs was done to spite Lameravis who desired the World Tree for his people. This has some plausibility as Lameravis stole a branch from Elysium to gift the beauty seeking elves with their own version of the World Tree, Yggstrasil, in the Echovad Forrest . The third most prominent understanding of this action is that the fierce pride and primitive urges of the uncouth orcs is the violent action needed to protect the most precious gift of the World Tree.

An Object of Desire and Destruction

Jiisho is mentioned in the The War of Light and Dark as recorded in the Dawn of the Gods, playing a minor role in restraining the enraged Dark in it's appointed course around the world.   However, there is little question of her primary role in the Dragon War, an event well grounded in historical fact. This conflict arose between Saynleh and Jiisho and resulted in the destruction of the untapped leylines of the North part of the elven lands, breaking the continent into a series of magical islands where species that few have seen have evolved. The populations of these Shattered Isles is very small, and their diversity is enormous. Lameravis was extremely angry by the destruction of his lands and led the other Voices into battle on the side of Jiisho to halt the continued conflict between these two gods and the ongoing destruction of the land of his people. This action by the normally hedonistic and careless elven god led to a new relationship with Jiisho, and some have theorized set in motion a chain of seemingly unrelated events that eventually led to the The Betrayal.
