Tombs
There are so many we are unable to put to rest. It is, therefore, our duty to cure those whose bones we can recover. Dignity in life and death.
Beneath Crossroads Island, the dead are processed into Relics
Purpose / Function
The tombs, or fends, are where the bones of those waiting to be cured are stored. The curing process can take extended time due to the nature of the work. After all, it's not always easy to contact and summon the spirit of a bone's body. Especially when that body has been recovered from a wreck or unearthed during an excavation or construction.
Alterations
Since only a small bit of material is required to cure a spirit into a relic, most of the space is divided into aisles. The 'walls' between these aisles are tall cabinets of small drawers, each neatly labled with the identifying information of the bone or bone fragment inside. Because relics are returned to the immediate family of the deceased (except in some rare cases where the deceased has no known relations), it's important to keep accurate account of what was whom.
Architecture
The tombs are carved directly into the bedrock of Crossroads Island. When they were constructed is anyone's guess, however the vitrification of the original tunnel spaces tells that either they were lava tubes from when the world was young and hot, or else they were melted away as a dragon's warren.
Defenses
Being underground and mostly unknown are its biggest defenses. It is a consistent operation, and people are always around. Likewise, it is a very small and intimate community who process the dead, and so new and unfamiliar faces don't go unchallenged.
