Relic Item in Argentii | World Anvil

Relic

Across Argentii, people ask each other 'what do you want to be when you die?' It is a reminder to young and old that everyone that is, dies.

Relics are physical objects that summarize the memories and life experiences of a deceased person.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The discovery of Theeksfur and the advancement of Technoalchemy has made processing the bones of the deceased much easier. The process requires less time and most families have their mundane relics within a year, depending on distance and weather conditions.

History

Ancient technomancers discovered a process that not only recovered a person's memories from a sample of their tissue, but also to form a relic from that sample. Most often, these relics become treasured family heirlooms. Occasionally, the relic of an important person may be displayed in an island's museum, university, library, or government hall as a representation of their contributions to an island and its people.

Rarely, a powerful or otherwise important person will become a relic of extraordinary or dangerous properties. These relics are then securely sequestered deep within the twisting tunnels of the vault within the Reliquary at Library Inn.

The oldest relics in the Library Inn's collection predate Tige the Uniter and Talla of Smouge.

Significance

Each island has different traditions involving both the burning of remains and the treatment of relics. For example, whether they are displayed in the home or put to function or even laid to rest in a community vault.

It is common for people to reflect on what they want to be when they die. Some islands value this as a meditation topic while others set aside certain days or seasons for reflecting on this and other details of death. But the commonness of death is not ignored among the people of Argentii.
