Orbshroom Orb Material in Argentii | World Anvil

Orbshroom Orb

It is the orb of the Orbshroom that makes the plant so useful to our plans. If my suspicions are true, it will truly usher in a new age.

The orb of the orbshroom is a solid, gelatinous-seeming form of bioluminescent blue. It grows on, and can be harvested from, the uplifted fronds of even the most immature orbshrooms. They range in size from granular -- on the tiniest shoots of fresh orbshroom spawnings -- to the size of a person's head on a fully mature orbshroom.

There are even rumors of mutant orbshrooms that have grown taller than a person and bear orbs three times as large as any others.

Properties

Material Characteristics

An orb of solid gelatinous material that emits a bright blue glow due to an unknown bioluminescent property. Piercing the outer skin of the orb immediately extinguishes the bioluminescence, and so it has yet to be thoroughly studied. However, no other changes have been observed in the primary characteristics of the orb flesh when sliced, shredded, or otherwise rendered apart from itself.

History & Usage

Environmental Impact

There is more to the orbshroom's orbs than meets the eye, but I do not yet know what that more is. Clearly, it is bioluminescent. Though it feels like a gel, it can be sliced and does not lose its shape, though it does lose its luminous qualities.

I have sent several packets of orbshroom spores in the care of a close friend on his travels to Tilth. I know that they grow in the Wall District of Central Tilth; in fact, they thrive there growing taller than I've ever seen, standing taller than a person! But that place is so toxic from the glass foundaries I wouldn't dare to ask anyone to visit, much less collect a sample from that hellscape. Fortunately, he volunteered. (Truthfully, he suggested that I couldn't stop him, even if I tried.)

But, if my suspicions are true, we cannot have that jackass Ploui Jirs, Spu getting even a hint that there might be something special growing right under his nose. That won't be an easy task, but you-know-who is certainly up for it. He always is.

I think that the carefully cultivated domestic samples I sent with him will prove a wonderful control for the test of my hypothesis. They do well enough with a barrel of sea water here at the Inn, but I want to know what happens when they are exposed to the ocean itself, and especially the sort of brackish, polluted sea water found around Tilth.

If they can clean that mess, then there might be hope of recovering the losses at the Caldera, after all. At least, we will be one step closer.

That is what makes studying the stems and orbs of the Wall District orbshrooms so vital. They've been thriving for generations in one of the most unhealthy environments on all of Argentii. My friends in the Metilth Working Caste tell me often of how there are hidden, secluded areas of the wall district that have begun to turn green with moss and and some sort of stubby groundcover! Moss! And grass! ON TILTH!

In the meantime, let us all pray that our efforts continue to go unnoticed by the Ploui, and that the rebellion is swift and successful.
