Ulthran, Host of Waters

Ulthran

One of the Twelve High Hosts that rule over the Heavens.   Fisher folk are said to pray to Ulthran, but by and large she is a Host that most avoid. The Monosi and Milosians fear water for different reasons. For the Monosi, the Sea of Trials is a source of tremendous power and historic moment, yet also a source of judgment and terror from their leaders. For the Milosians, the sea has long been the mythical source of their devils and monsters, and indeed they did not take to seafaring until ages after most other civilizations, despite living on a peninsula. For this reason, many of Ulthran's depictions have her resembling the Devils of the Five Hells more than her fellows.   Ulthran is oft depicted with blue or gray skin, her hair black as midnight, and her eyes yellow or red. Some illustrations even grant her fangs. More than one Telling of the Five Hells have her cavorting or tempting one of the Seven Devils, though as often as not this is meant to vex or fool the fiend. Even so, no other Host is shown to interact so familiarly with the Devils of the underrealm.   Ulthran is the Host of the Afterlife, who commands the seas in the sky. For this reason, death is seen as terrifying, or at best bleak and hopeless. More recent myths depict her as only the Host of the damned, presumably sharing her Heavenly kingdom with the Devils, while virtuous souls pass under the realm of one of the other Hosts.   Ulthran's colors are Purple and Blue. Her bird is the Bat. Her beast is the Toad. Her Month is the twelfth Month, called the Ul Moon or the All Moon. Her constellation is the Mouth. She is associated with secrecy, emotions, pleasure-seeking, and mysticism. She is sometimes considered the patron of Sylvaran, the sixth Royarch.   Common Aspects: Ulthran Bainte (the reaper), Ulthran Treoir (the guide), Ulthran Olpheist (the monster)
