Gridhozd

The Gridhozd are a people whose lives have revolved around animal husbandry for most of their time on the earth. They live primarily amongst the northeastern hills of central Olveiria, typically called the Seastones (for their relatively proximity to the coast), where they now work as miners of ore and gemstones for the Glorylands of Tsirakan.   For most of their history, though, the Gridhozd distinguished themselves by their mastery over nearly all the beasts of the field. Even the fearsome unicorn, a mount that troubled the Mornal armies for millennia, were mastered by the Gridhozd, and it was said their own armies could even command the bloody manticore to do their bidding. For all their supposed prowess, however, the Gridhozd refused to wield power over anything that flies. Birds are holy to the Gridhozd, and their gods are called the Divine Menagerie.   Like most of the peoples of Northern Olveiria, the Gridhozd are believed to have descended from slaves of the Mornal Empire that freed themselves during the empire's fall. The Gridhozd creation myth speaks of the Divine Menagerie descending from the heavens to breath the air of freedom into their ancestors, which inspired them to rise up and break the chains of the devils that enslaved them. Most assume the devils spoken of in this myth were in fact the Mornal Empire.   The Gridhozd are oft mistaken for part of the Rohai, who live in the rest of the Olveirian hills, and indeed the Rohai call them the Roh Innigil, or the "tribe of the weak," seeing them as a traitor branch that abandoned the Rohai Way. It was for protection from the Rohai that the Gridhozd eventually swore fealty to the Tsirakan to the north, who shield them in exchange for the gems and minerals they mine out of the Seastones.   The Gridhozd are, generally, short and broad people, with earthen complexions. In these respects, they are indeed similar to the Rohai to the west, but only the Gridhozd are known to grow hair of the gilt shades: wheat, straw, gold, and silvery.
