Wamper's Feast

Wamper's Feast is a small farming community in southern Arborea. Despite its size, Wamper's Feast (hereafter Wamper's) has had an outsized impact on recent Arborean history and was pivotal to events within the Upheaval.

An unwilling arrival

Wamper's Feast was the largest subject of the Shadowfey's planar manipulations, not that inhabitants were aware of the implications of their unexpected arrival at the time. Nearing the chiming of midnight on the last day of the Tradefest festival, Wamper's was transported from the Prime Material Plane to Arborea-an event commonly referred to as a Shifting.   The Shifting of Wamper's Feast had an immediate impact on the town, naturally. Subject to attack from animated Tradefest scarecrows, the townsfolk rallied to secure the township from the dangers of the strange realm. While they built barricades and scouted their new jungle-filled location, the townsfolk remained blissfully unaware that members of the Court of Eyes moved among them, having infiltrated the town long prior to the Shifting to perfect their nefarious designs for the simple townsfolk. Unbeknownest to anyone, fae or otherwise, the Shadowfey had used the rustic town to perfect their control over planar shifting, the final step prior to launching their master plan for the sacrifice of the hapless realm.

The Arising of Heroes

Amongst the confusion immediately following the Shifting, a trio of adventurers joined forces to defend the town. This now-famous trio - Songsell Xankris Ni-Celenist, Dragon Friend Bax Bigdong, and Shadow-Consort La'had - rose from humble beginnings to become the famed First Cohort of Wamper's Feast.   No-one doubts the legends and fantastical poems sung by Songsells of the First Cohort are embellished and imbued with artistic license. One doesn't have to look further that the bawdy ballad "Vomit as Performance Art" that details the unlikely tale of Bax trying to impress a magical inn of flower-kin with his colourful sprays of internal digestion to understand the undertakings of the First Cohort have taken on a life divorced from reality. However, most sources capture their first major victory with little additional trappings - the thwarting of the junior member of the Court of Eyes, styled the Kalie, who schemed to imprison the town using gas spore poison. This telling remains true given the tragic impact this simple conflict would later play upon the dissolution of the First Cohort and fall from grace of arguably its most powerful member, Lolastre's later-consort cum betrayer La'had.

Why Wamper's?

Songsells and scholars remain fascinated with the impact this unassuming village has played on the events of the Wild Realm. While some downplay the arrival of the Heroes of the Upheaval as a mere coincidence, others point to a confluence of occurrences that elevate Wamper's impact to rival that of the great cities of its former location and current plane: the infamy of Wamper's Tradefest as a source of magical potency and otherworldly sightings; the unusual amount of dormant heritages awoken among Wamper's residents following the Shifting; the thinness of the veil between planes that lie at the centre of the village.   While once favoured by travellers for the sweetness and generous size of the apples from its famed orchards, the legend of Wamper's Feast has grown to such an extent that those who follow their curiosity to the small village are puzzled that such an epoch-shaping location slumbers within the lazy heat of a mid-noon sun, a simple farming village that wears its claim to fame with no pretense and little time for the trappings of heroism.

A new age dawns?

One thing Songsells, sages and scholars concur-Fate is unlikely to be done with Wamper's Feast. The so-called Dormant Generation are coming of age, having spent a decade since the Upheaval experimenting and mastering their emerging powers and testing the limits of their faiths. Wamper's may be content to slumber in anonymity but the Dormant Generation stalk the surrounding jungle with restless feet and fire in their hearts.

The Fae Court of Wamper Marten

Wamper was a simple yet honest merchant from Westport whose entrepreneurship was no match for his distracting curiosity. Despite the sun-setting on that fateful day, his concern for arriving at the nearest weigh-station on the darkening road was defeated by the pull of the mysterious apple orchard that had, seemingly, grown to weight since the scant weeks he'd last past by.   The apples were ripe, large and sweet and despite the howl of wolves and threat of bandits after-dark, Wamper fell into a deep slumber. He awoke in the same orchard... but far from the home he knew. Befriended by the local fae, Wamper indulged his curiosity and appetite both, in all manner of food, knowledge, and carnality. His time with the fae was short by their standards, but half-a-lifetime by his. When he awoke within the same orchard years later he carried two burdens: the ever-lasting longing to dance within the vibrancy of Arborea one more time, and a small child. Wamper Marten had become a father.   Unwilling to leave the orchard for fear of missing the fae's return, and concerned at the talent his precocious bundle had for manipulating the local fauna and flora, Wamper founded his town and, in homage to the narcissicism of his Arborean hosts, named it after himself.   To hasten his return to Arborea, Wamper made Tradefest the highlight of life in Wamper's Feast, attracting all manner of trader's, merchants, magicians, songsells, scholars, and those propelled by a curious life. For seven glorious days each year, Wamper surrounded himself with the trappings of a colourful fae court, ruling above all with a bountiful laugh and a generous spirit as the mercurial Orchard King.

My, how you've changed

In the ten years since the Shifting, Wamper's has changed dramatically, likely unrecognisable to any who visited previously.   The footprint of the town has shrunk and the apple orchard that so enamoured Wamper has been replaced by the dryad grove Misty's Copse. The vengeful dragon Escalon took care of the Marten Manor, now fallen to ruin and reclaimed by the jungle, while the old church was stripped to re-build the town's dwellings. The Fallen Apple and the Old Goory Mill boasts the only original buildings remaining, though both changed names to honour their new location and associated events that shaped the new Wamper's Feast.   Despite all the changes, the laidback, friendly community remained, if somewhat diminished. The lure of the Arborean Wilds proved too enticing for many; for everyone else, goats still need milkin', hay still needs bundlin' and the sun still rises every morn (albeit in an unsettling range of shifting hues).

What a pretty map!~ Reading about the settlement, it must have been very scary for the citizens when it shifted. I wonder how they kept their laidback and friendly culture in the end?

Most of the citizenry ended up leaving for 'safer' pastures, those that stayed just kept keeping on. Thanks for the comment, made me think!
