House Mared

"House Mared, they're a vassal o' House Kaerwyn up in th' hills of North Avendur," Buck began. "Right that they're a newer house, bein' founded only about 60 years ago, and then, 'twas only as a Barony. The first head of the House was Ander Mared, takin' as he did a chance to stab someone else in th' back--some minor Lord no one remembers. But that got 'im noticed, takin' credit for whatever they done together, and there yeh have it--he's a Baron."   "Gets right to work he does, developin' the little lands he has and establishin' a bit o' farmin' and attractin' people to work it. Kept the area safer, he did."   "Now that goes well enough until Balar's Rebellion breaks out, and Klerbold starts makin' a fair deal o' coin by capturin' deserters and sellin' 'em back to the Queen's forces, and probably t' the enemy too, but I kint prove that. Anyway, durin' the fightin' one day he nabs Feyr Maeleth, bein' a lesser son o' that house. Turns out the Maeleth lad was carryin' details o' troop movements, so Klerbold sees 'is chance and brings 'im to the future Queen's forces. Now she gets the jump on her uncle, and eventually takes the throne, and Klerbold gets some favor outta that. Once its all over she raises his house up from Baron o' Hakeswill to Count. And then 'twasn't long before old Ander passed on, and Klerbold becomes the second Count. "   "Now he's got more clout, y'see, and he starts buildin' up further. Bein' that he's a good tracker and has a special love for huntin' down criminals and deserters, and bein' real good at it too, it starts gettin' out that...well, he ain't exactly kind in how he goes about what he does. In fact, he's more'n a bit of a terror, and his reputation gets dark. But bein' as he's the best there is at what he does, House Kaerwyn isn't upset, and Klerbold gets sterner and more ferocious in his huntin'."   "People know, iffin' yer on the run, fleein' the law or such, used t' be you could head for Kardas Pass and get up n' over the mountains to Akaryth. Not with old Klerbold about. He'll catch yeh, and haul ye back. Most of yeh, anyway. N' that's why he keeps the red hound as his sigil--because he's a hunter and a right killer."   "A short history, they bein' so new, but a bloody one, mind ye."
