Queen Heulyn II (HEW-lynn)

Queen Heulyn II Halad (a.k.a. Selðe Hálad / Halad (birth name))

Current monarch of Keledon and Southern Sen

"The Queen?", said Buck, taking a long swig from his flagon, "Of course I can tell you all about the Queen! I'm a well known patriot, I'll have ye know!" "Where to begin," he paused, "I guess at the beginning..."

Biography

"So ye know her as Queen Heulyn, second of that name, and by all those fancy Royal Titles of Keledon--Duchess o' this, Marquess o' that, Sun-Crowned, and all th' rest. But when she was born she was just Selðe o' the House Halad , aways down the South Road in Riverwatch Castle in Hawksbridge. That woulda been on the sixteenth day o' the month a' Highsun in...wot....1842 I suppose. I remembers th' date because of the festivals we be celebratin' every year for her birthday. Anyway, "Selðe" means "songbird" or "nightingale" in th' Old Tongue, by the way (educate yaselves), and twas the same place her brother was born--that'd be King Halar III o' course, Gods rest 'is soul--so she was never meant t' be Queen. Or mebbe she was. Who can say? But anyway the King died, but before he was gone he chose Selðe to succeed him. But their uncle Balar Halad, being the stiff necked sorta gruff ol' bastard he was, figgered he 'ad the better claim to the throne."   "Why? That don't matter right now, but iffin ya be wantin' to know all that, I'll tell ya about Balar's Rebellion later on. All yeh gotta now fer now is uncle and niece took it t' war, and they fought it owt fer two or three years, with this House or that House declarin' fer one side or th' other. And in the end it was Selðe who won, and better twas fer alla us, because Balar was a pigshit of a man, I tell ya. So when she'd been a princess ya couldn't help but love 'er. She was kind, ya know. An' ust beyootiful, old hardass Alanson over in th' corner there acts so hard but he was besotted, I tells ya...what? Shut up, ya was too and I saw ya holdin' ya hat over ya heart every time ya looked up at the castle, just like all the resta us, so drink y'ale ya dunce! Anyway. She was generous too. She wanted the 'ungry ta be fed and the naked t' be clothed. She genuinely likes the people, ya know? Anyway, so she becomes Queen after doin' all the stuff ya gotta do, going to th' Woodmere, and havin' the Druids do whatever it is they do, and alla that.

Head of State

"So, as the story goes," and for a moment he stopped, drained his flagon, and called for another, "she was just gonna be plain ol' Queen Selðe, or as plain as that beautiful lass can be. But she comes out on th' balcony, right, to greet the crowds while th' Druids proclaim her the True Queen and alla that, and someone shouts out, "Long live Queen Heulyn, second of 'er name!" And soon everyone takes that up. And th' first Queen Heulyn, the Summersong, who is a real legend we still talk about after hundredsa years, she was loved too, and that's why we call her reign the Bright Years, and t' give that name to Selðe? I mean...ya can't know what that meant. I was there, see, and I saw that look on her face, and the weight o' history she felt, and that's when I knew she'd be the queen we wanted, we needed 'er to be. And Gods, we loved her and she loved us, and right then she made the Barons Mendicant (I'll tell ya about them later) an' she told them to come t' her every year and make sure us common folk were good. And like we wanted, she becomes Heulyn, second o' her name--and right that she didn't have much of a choice in that--and everyone's 'appy.   "So she sets about right away makin' the bad good and the good better. She makes sure the roads are better, the land is safer, we get bridges where we need 'em and stores up provender for leaner times. She figgers she'll keep the peace with those people over th' mountains in Akaryth, and doncha know their King Valeyr III, keeps tryin' t' marry her!"   Buck broke out into a great belly laugh, and we all joined him. Akaryth is a fine enough land, and the people decent enough folk but they're not us, if you know what I mean, and they've forgotten the Old Ways well enough.   "So her Majesty ain't got an heir yet, 'cause she ain't married no onenor chosen a successor, but she's still young. There's her younger brother Turan, o' course, but he's a Druid and that means he can't be part of alla this politicking so I guess we'll find out one day."

Personal Standard

"So a queen has to have her standard, right? So she took the golden hawk that's been the symbol of us all since the
days old King Sothar kesGalen made a kingdom outta us. But the Queen, she knows which side o' the bread gets the butter, right, so she's good with the Druids and she knows the legends, so she added in the moon and the dragon to remind her of 'em, and then the sun-on-black of her own House. An' that's why ya get t' see it when she's celebratin' and doin' all the things Queens do."

The Queen's Council

"But ya know, runnin' a kingdom--oh I'm sorry, a queendom thank ye, is a big job, especially with alla us being such hard nosed scrubs,"--here everyone burst into laughter; we Keledoni are a tough lot and governing us has got to be like trying to herd feral cats--"so her ladyship she kits out Queen Heulyn's High Council with some good people."   "Ya gotta have a good High Chancellor, because he's ya right hand, so she calls on her grand uncle Ademar Halad. And lemme tell ya, she made th' right choice there. And ya gotta have someone who can git the money ya need, so her Master of the Purse is Joryn Windmere, and that's fair enough since he's richer than me sainted wife's beef stew. And then ya gotta have a High Steward, and he's th' guy who is gonna tkae care of those roads and bridges and all those things along with the royal castles an all. So she gets Maeglin Kurdwyn in on that, bringin' him on down from Lothyan, and then brings up Lord Borudh from th' Isles to be Master o' Sail. And then ya need someone who knows soldiers and battle and alla that to handle th' swords n' spears n' knights and all, and of course she calls up th' Duke o' Blackmoor--that's his Lordship Rendar Alens, ya know, biggest man I ever saw. And then the Druids send one a their own ta round it off, that old Galwyn ya all've seen at the Longest Night bonfires.   And that's our Queen, ya see? That grand lady up on th' Hill there. Now buy me another ale and I'll tell ya some more tales."
