Session 51: Temporary Crew

General Summary

Previous Session Review and Leveling Up Chat

The fight with Kasumi was the first time we fought someone that was truly prepared for us and knew what we were capable of.
Remember when we were at the gate looking at the swamp - Kasumi’s trail ends cold. Not there 12 hours later…

Stormy's Funk Resolved

Stormy Smoking Mountain asked for 2K gold and disappeared with Chuck. She returned and the group asked what was up.
She explains what she did and what’s been rolling about in her head.
  • Seeing your own people succumb to the darkness always hits a bit harder, this is why you see Stormy go a bit berserk around Tabaxi Amanita worshipers.
  • She’s miffed at y’all for not going after Kasumi. She really believes we needed just one more shot to take her down and that we could have found Kasumi if we wouldn’t have waited. (Now is this really true? Not necessarily.)
  • But she respects you all enough to not go against you. This time it was just really hard for her.
  • She went to Samara and put a price on Kasumi’s head with the 2K gold. This gives her some closure.

  •

Stormy's take on Cernan's Change to Oath of Vengeance

  • She sees Cernan Aelar turning darker, not evil, just not being the light bringer anymore. Now he’s the justice bringer. And she feels someone in the group needs to bring the light.
  • So her next spell will be daylight. It will reveal those who hide in the darkness and bring light to those who need it.

  •

    Cernan's Take

  • He is focused on bringing justice to those who willingly have allowed this. This will pull back the darkness and let the light in again. Stormy supports this.

  •

    DM Reminders

  • 8 worlds have fallen, Arabeth is hesitantly taking up the “can’t make peace” with her sister.
  • The 9th would be Verdenhold. This is the LAST CHANCE. If we can’t stop Amanita, all is lost.

  •

    Shopping for Supplies

Rashid Fen Rey wants to make a copy of hid spellbook. (Note taker assumes he did.)
      Shopping. Rowan helps us.
  • Thoradin son of Thorlum buys a necklace of attunement. (there are 3 available. he’s taking one.) Rashid Fen Rey takes one and we pick up the other one too for the back of holding.

  •

    Identify

Deep purple potion from Feywilds - polymorph self, 2 doses

    Goodbyes

Stormy says goodbye to Chuck, gives him her arm ring. Makes him a member of her Tribe. She tells him about the tribe. He will help anyone with a similar ring. We might not see each other again.
Stormy gives Rowan a tooth off her necklace. He sticks it in his mouth. We pay him and give him a tip.

    Heading Out

Captain Gregor Thuum at Rock of Bral. (See Forgotten Realms wiki for pictures and maps.)
We go through the Bral Gate.
Bral is a giant rock on steering fins. A city that pirates started and pirates still run today. Sort of legal pirates—privateers. Look and there’s nebula. Stormy is gaga over it and trying to record it. The ether is magical.
Cita is watching for pickpockets as we come through the gate. She gives them sign to back off.
The openness and freedom abounds. Stormy is the happiest you’ve seen her in a long time.
  • we end up at the docks.
  • the ships float on “nothing”
  • ships are loading on both sides?

  •   Astral Sea
  • Thoradin is confused that there’s not water. Rashid says it’s magic.

  •   Cita snags a kid and asks. Simmy - we attempt teaching him to be a tout.
  • Dola's Fortune. Usually docks at slip 13.
  • best place to buy lunch? Drags us away from the decks. A ramen shop. A gramma-type in the back.
  • 4 sp each for lunch + Simmy

  •   At the docks, we see a ship like a Chinese junk.
  • We have a map that gets us to one of those worlds. We work our way back. Dimetris.

  •   Bryce’s map

We know Verdenhold is 9, we could go back to the beginning technically.
We approach the ship. A rather large individual, ordering people around. (A giff.)
  • Going to Cathica first.
  • He owes Master Grakkon a big favor.
  • our map doesn’t help
  • We are willing to learn to help along the way.
  • Thuum asks Falkteeth to look up the the logs.
  • Rashid makes an archana check.
  • We don’t like passengers. But Crew. Crew’s another thing.
  • Falkteeth back - osbscure mention of Dimitris from last eristide.
  • We may have to meet the owner. Negas Latimmer.

  •   We go with Thuum. We go into the dwarf quarter to a decent inn.
  • most chairs are off the the side, circle of tables, and crazy scattered office
  • Lattimer is a "dwarf" that looks more like a ferengi from Star Trek
  • They whisper to each other.
  • Temporary crew - but don’t pay us, but we get food. Contract?
  • He spends an hour writing up a contract.
  • Lattimer is coming
  • Quarter share - gained through defense and boarding actions as a group.
  • only gets our stuff if none of us is alive or sane/uncontrolled.

  •

    On Board

    We meet with the crew.

      Pilmor - a plasmoid.
Stormy talks with Cubins the Weapons master - tells him about what we are capable of and what we’ve dealt with.
Going to the cargo hold - we transition to the gravity switches but it feels normal after a bit. We go back and forth a bit to get the gist.
Our last chance to go ashore. Cita finds Simmy and takes him out to supper. Buy supplemental rations. (we all do) for Dimetris and beyond. (500 lbs of rations - 41 days. And Stormy and Cernan could cast a spell to create food weekly.)

Simmy tells us wildspace is around a world or ship. You never know what’s going to be there. In the astral sea - not need to eat or drink. Magically imbues you. When you get close to the world. The only air is what is around the ship.
We can go fishing. Pole and grubs - for 3. Things to carve. Notebook.
Captain Thuum says we go to Cathica first, Liverness, Autaris, then Dimetris.
We set sail. Kind of like sailing but 3D. Rashid gets to try. The map was useless they have to have it in mind. (not have to use attunement slot, but attune to help and concentrate)
They push us all over and we go up and down in the gravity field and level out. Think that you want to come back to the ship. Wildspace is different and scary. Astral sea will take care of you.
If you fire an arrow - we dip it in lard and lights on fire. The gravity plane only goes so far out. You can take advantages out.
Cubins has us work the ballista as a team. They are 3 person rigs. 1 person cranks it back. 1 aims. 1 puts bolts. Every shot you rotate. Thoradin managed 5. They are impressed.
Day 1 was difference between sea sailing and a spelljammer. (Stormy writes to Chuck about our adventures and will send via Lady Samara. She'll be sending Samara notes and info/intel with the letters to chuck.)
      Day 2
  • Cita climbs the mast to see what she can see. She’s just in the middle of it.
  • we see things moving in the distance. we aren’t sure what they are
  • Stormy wants to learn the sea shanties. There are spelljammer shanties. 4 part harmony. The beauty of the astral sea, how much of a slave master the captain is, “Haul away for wildspace”. Edited versions of ports of call and things you get in trouble for at port. Stormy shares her favorite battle songs and shanties from home.

  •

    “Haul Away for Wildspace”

    Chorus
    Haul away, lads, haul away,
By starlight, spell, and silver spray!
Through crystal dark and astral foam,
We’ll steer the stars and call them home!
Oh, the wind won’t fill our canvas here,
No tide below, no shore draws near,
But the helmstone hums and the rigging sings,
As we sail where the comet’s tail-flame springs.
      Chorus
    Haul away, lads, haul away,
By starlight, spell, and silver spray!
Through crystal dark and astral foam,
We’ll steer the stars and call them home!
We left old Toril far astern,
Where lanterns glow and hearth-fires burn,
Now moons like coins in a dragon’s hoard
Shine bright on the deck of our spelljammer lord.
      Chorus
There’s neogi ships off the larboard bow,
And giff on the guns crying, “Fire now!”
The captain laughs with her blade held high,
“Give ’em thunder and sail the sky!”
      Chorus
We’ve drunk with elves on a living tree,
Seen dwarven citadels forge the sea,
Paid tolls to ghosts in an astral gale,
And patched our hull with a beholder’s veil.
      Chorus
So heave, my hearts, let the stars roll by,
With a pocket of gold and a hungry sky,
For no king’s road and no harbor wall
Can hold the crew that has heard space call!
      Final Chorus
    Haul away, lads, haul away,
By starlight, spell, and silver spray!
Through crystal dark and astral foam,
We’ll steer the stars and call them home!
Aye, steer the stars and call them home!

  • Cernan wants to see if he can move around on his own. Kind of like swimming. Rashid rolls the ship slowly as a joke to Cernan.
  • We try fishing. Cita and Stormy catch a 3 foot astral salmon - beautiful! Quality sushi fish. Pilmor is the cook.
  • Cita catches a hammerhead looking thing. 5 feet long. Everyone is impressed with her catch.

  •   After 6 days of travel we approach Cathica. We batten down for wildspace. We man the balistas.
  • Rashid, Landis, and Cernan are on the balista.
  • Cita climbs up to the crows nest.

  •   Pirates like being on the edge of wildspace.
We see a sun and a world. Bloop we are inside. DO NOT FALL OFF THE SHIP.

    Cathica

  • pass by a moon
  • approaching a world
  • break into the atmosphere glide and rest on water

  •   Latimmer and Thuum go ashore. The rest of us stay on the ship. A few hours later - we load and unload.
  • Stormy was interested in learning from Negas. He teaches her about profit and risk of certain cargos.
  • Deceased
