(After Session 34 - Frost Giant Schmebulock) While Rashid is “on vacation” (that’s how he thinks of this period of time), he reflects back on the past few days of unceasing action. “I was very lucky quite a few times. My spells held out, and the mana potions were a true gift when I needed them most. But I can’t always count on being so lucky. I need something else. Even my new golem, Landis, might not be enough. My friends are counting on me to be there when they need me. All of the groups of explorers in Frostgrave had mercenaries and swordsmen to aid in their quests, but the wizards were the most formidable. And the wizards who could do more than just cast a few spells were the ones who were most successful, and the ones I respected the most. Maybe I need to look beyond what I can do with magic.” Thinking these thoughts, Rashid wandered the city near Sword Row, the heart of the military in Alador. He lifted his face up, eyes closed, basking in the sun shining down, blessing the city with warmth and welcome light. Moving on, a few moments later at the side of one of the barracks, Rashid spotted a soldier sitting on a bench sharpening a sword. The soldier looked up and gave him a friendly smile. “Hello there. What is a wizard doing in this part of town? I don’t recognize you, tell me your name.” “My name is Rashid.” “Rashid? Hmmm, why does that sound familiar? I’ve heard that name recently. Are you one of the wizards who helped defend the city?” “I am” said Rashid, grinning. Something about the soldiers’ manner made him feel welcome, even though a stranger, and also slightly amused that the soldier obviously didn’t realize who he was. It made talking to the man easier, less formal. “Ah, that must be why. Doubtless I heard someone mention you while we were defending the bridge.” “You were one of the soldiers on the bridge?” It was Rashid’s turn to wonder. “Pray, tell me your name?” “I am Geof Fanedro, Captain of the 4th regiment.” “Captain Fanedro, I am honored to meet you. You and your men did the city a great service and we are in your debt. Would you allow me to buy you a drink and talk with you a while?” “I am fortunate that I am not on duty right now. I would indeed enjoy a drink.” Rashid and the captain made their way to a nearby tavern, and Rashid bought drinks for his guest, as well as a round for any soldiers who fought for the city. The captain was ready to tell of his part in the battle, and genuinely surprised to realize that his new friend is Sir Rashid Fen Rey, Knight of Runes. “Sir Rashid, I beg your pardon! I truly did not recognize you. I only saw you for a moment from the bridge, and that was from a long way off, and in the heat of battle.” “You have not insulted me in the least. In fact, you were friendly towards me without knowing who I was, and that is a great compliment to your character. And you may be able to do me yet more honor.” “Simply name what you would like, and I will do what I can.” So, Rashid tells the captain his thoughts, and shows him the black sword. “I can defend myself and my friends with magic, but at the final battle, I felt myself growing very weary. In truth, I was down to the last spells I could cast. I need to be able to defend myself in other ways. I can even foresee a time when to use magic might actually do more harm than good. I’d like to be able to use this sword without worrying that I might accidentally harm an ally. My aim is not to become a great sword fighter, but merely not to be totally incompetent with the blade. Can you help me?” And so, two evenings a week, after he completes his duties, Captain Geof Fanedro teaches Rashid how not to be useless with a sword.Relationships
