Military

While not currently embroiled in any military conflicts, Illarescia has been part of several wars in the last millennium, including the Silver Schism, Corpsewood Insurrection, and the Great Northern War.
The Emperor decreed the formation of a standing army seven hundred years ago, and it has remained one of the foremost institutions of Illarescian society since. The noble governors of each region is required to maintain and send a certain number of soldiers to serve in the army every year, and these recruits form the backbone of the infantry. They are called the Standards, or the Standard Infantry. More specialized units, such as the Blackwing Regiment of elite warriors or the Long Arrows cavalry units, get their members from the military academies in Poderos and Vall. The academies themselves technically accept students based on their performance at an annual exam, but the majority of students still come from the upper classes.
