Turo
Turo, known as the Bejeweled Town, is a settlement in the south of Illarescia. Primarily a mining settlement, Turo is wealthy beyond the measure of ordinary towns, ferrying precious metals and gems from the World's Spine Mountains, and worked masterpieces down the river either to Vall or to the capital Poderos across the Black Prairie.
Government
The town is headed by a mayor who is chosen by the townspeople and approved by the Emperor. The mayor controls all aspects of the town's governance, acting as an authoritarian head in the Emperor's stead.
Industry & Trade
Turo's economy is solely based on mining. The World's Spine Mountains to the south are plentiful in various metals, especially adamantine and mithril, precious ores used in weapon and armor smithing. The town also produces a small amount of precious gems and other metals. The denizens of Turo are skilled smiths, jewelers, and miners. Some of the work produced by Turo's inhabitants heads directly to the Emperor, dispensed by him to those he favors.
A tiny cadre of merchants also make their living in Turo, selling the finished products and ores down the river to the rest of Illarescia or through Vall and across the sea.
History
The drow Kingdom of Mournfal lies just to the south of Turo deep in the roots of the World's Spine mountains. When the town was founded, the settlers were unaware of their proximity to Mournfal. They were interested only in the mineral riches they found in the mountains. Through the years, skirmishes have broken out between the townspeople and the drow, culminating the the most recent slaving expeditions the drow have conducted against Turo. Many of the townspeople blame the mayor, Vitale II, for not doing enough to stop the kidnapping of their loved ones, meanwhile the drow slavers have only gotten more aggressive.
