Starfarer

Written by Pookas Kreations

They are humanoid elves and are more evolved than the Avalonians, but less than the Aetherians. Starfarers are a species related to the Aetherian--Star Elves, and are an evolution that falls between the Avalonians (what the Aetherians call the Indigenes. The Starfarers can sense the cosmic rays but don't use it for nourishment.   The Aetherians' evolution was actually bioengineered by some of their scientists during a famine to help them survive it. The people mostly embraced it. The ones that didn't start being called Indigenes, and were looked down on, because they didn't follow the rest of the species' evolutionary path.   Starfarers can see the solar wind to use it to guide them in navigation, sense where it will be stronger or weaker, and dangerous cosmic events (like wormholes, shears, nebula, etc.   They are scattered throughout the northwest of Aclush, but there are small populations on all of the large continents. Sarna has a large population as well, it is here that their leader was born, and the rebellion started. His name is Ranik Kovani, and he is a pilot; his life partner is his navigator. Gavyn Tolen is their engineer and a genius biotech inventor.   I based them on various nomadic societies. They are space travelers, tinkers--repairing spaceships, and anything else needed. Hiring on as contractors, farmers, miners, etc. Many are highly skilled workers and tradesmen in various skills.   They aren't humans, not from Earth, many are throwbacks or didn't completely evolve from their Avalonian, Indigene stock into Aetherian--Star Elves  Starfarers are also called Travelers, and Star Wanderers, and come from Avalon. Many revere the Star Whales or Akadi, Goddess of Air.   Gavyn Tolen created a new propulsion system that uses solar or tachyon radiation to surf the winds with solar sails. At times he's even been able to reach FTL for short periods with his prototype.    Most people are good or neutral but have been known to be unprincipled or selfish. They are viewed poorly because of their  nomadic nature. Some have been known to be conmen, grifters, and have sticky fingers. Their concept of property is similar to a Kinder, or Romani. Some prefer to engage in privateers or outright pirate type jobs, even hiring on as mercenaries or bounty hunters.    Some systems that have had a bad experience with them, ban them from docking with a space station or coming to the planet's surface. Except, on planets that they have colonized, they are often ostracized by other civilized planets. They are usually few and far between. The Star Core usually travels constantly. Fertile planets, with many resources, attract them the most often recently. They are often welcomed most often on recently colonized worlds that need their specific skills.   Another reason they are mistrusted is that they often recruit young people from many worlds to leave with them, not always for just their skills. Their reputations are often justly deserved, especially for carousing, stealing, fighting, and acting like Don Juan.   Many of their colony worlds are hidden away, so they don't have to be beholden to governments that will make them follow rules that they don't believe in, pay taxes, tariffs, etc. Their planets are often like small towns in the Old West.   Marriage is considered a personal affair, if you tell others that you're married then you are. Someone in your family keeps the records for genetic reasons. If children are produced, the father is expected to take care of them even if they later split up. Many of these relationships depend on those involved, they can be open, or not.   They have a written language but almost all business is conducted orally. Languages spoken often depend on who they live by--Avalonians, Aetherians, etc.   Young are both every 6 years, babies take 1 year to gestate. They are born like people, twins up to quadruplets are common, and single births are rare. Depending on the family, children stay with them until they are in their 20s, or they are fostered by relatives in between 8-12 years old.    The whole family/village takes care of the children. They have elementary school when still with their parents. After leaving home they have various levels of Technical schools, if they are exceptionally gifted they will apprentice to a master to advance further.   The firstborn is expected to take over as the family head when their parents retire or die. Some families are patriarchal/matriarchal, or neutral.    Depending on the family, what is at stake if they enter combat, and what are the odds? Duels are common, although those to the death aren't. They are usually to first blood, unconsciousness, or if they can't fight anymore. Their usual weapons are melee, sonic, or neural, so their ships aren't damaged. If they are on a planet---laser, rail, or flechet guns can also be used. Calvary is reserved for herding cattle or riding for enjoyment.    Starfarers have a resistance to most types of radiation. Aeonians are neutral allies, Aetherian--Star Elves despise or look down on them, because of their rebellion, and subsequent Diaspora.   In the early years, of their colonies, houses are often their landed ships/shuttles. Then they slowly build houses and other useful buildings. If they need a quick getaway or they decide to move on, they can travel in a moments notice. They prefer houses to be built out of natural materials, technology is used, but it is often subtle, and hidden away. Their is usually one room that it is blatantly obvious, but can still be hidden away.   The buildings often start off as prefab or dome-like structures. Preferably simple, made from local materials. The richer, tech-based families use building minimechs for gathering materials and completing the project. Starfarers prefer to be able to build and live simply, and repair items with what they have or can source easily. They believe in repair, recycle, and reuse philosophy, to a fault.   They can live in almost any environment but prefer those in temperate zones. Some prefer the confines of their ship to open areas like plains. May dislike water, and snow.   They need four hours of sleep per night. They eat three small meals a day and are omnivores. While in space they eat ships rations that are like a futuristic pemmican, and ships biscuits while in space. Large ships have hydroponics bays to allow them to eat fresh greens and fruits.   Starfarers are nomads that travel in extended family groups and/or tribes. They often have farm ships that travel with or between groups, and their colonies. Which are enormous ships that provide various plants, and livestock to all.   Like the Aetherians all work is communal, they have a short workday and workweek. Many hands make the worker lite. Usually 5 hours a day, 3 days a week.    They noticed that the longer they traveled in space, their hair began to bleach to silver, and their skin turned from a dark bronze tan to a light bluish silver. New vision allowed them to see currents in the solar wind, and other phenomena into the ultraviolet spectrum, even electric, and elemental. Some can even hear the ultrasonic vibrations of the universe.   Average height is 5'6", weight 140 lbs, they are fit. Skinny ones are common, but being overweight is rare. They commonly live 200+ years. They dislike spicy foods, preferring subtle herby flavors. Don't have a strong sense of smell.   Faces are commonly oval, shallow brows, rounded eyebrows, round wideset eyes, round irises, and light blue or green eyes. Prominent, high cheekbones, short, snub nose, average mouth, small, straight teeth, and round, short chin. Many prefer no facial hair, a thin mustache, and a goatee. They have very little body hair.    While on a ship they usually wear a biotech jumpsuit. It has many functions--like a Fremen still suit--it absorbs waste, light-medium armor, environment, and space, produces oxygen, and becomes a stasis pod at need radio, location beacon, camo, etc.   They love brightly colored clothes, ribbons, scarves, and jewelry, but while working they wear drab, utility clothes. Their clothes are tailored to the person, and jumpsuits can adjust to the person and are paired to them. It is a symbiote, biotech suit. Jewelry is a symbol of wealth and status.   Intelligence, Constitution, and Charisma are commonly their best stats, but they don't really have a weak stat. They usually have a high morale, often dancing or singing. While on a planet, unless the environment is harsh, they show at least some skin, and they have no nudity taboo.   Psionics are common, many have at least a few abilities--the most common are--telemechanics, telepathy, and empathy. Their powers usually manifest as a toddler. They dislike magic.   One of their own invented the Ansible Communicator , another created the Solar Sailor, and the energy convertor that ran it. They are very inventive.
