Goliath

Goliath are a race of humanoids, distinguished by their large size and quiet nature. Descended from monstrous beings who once brought the Seven Kingdoms of Apa Axas to its knees, True Giants, the Goliath are a large race of humanoids who bear a striking resemblance to their ancestors, albeit it in a smaller, more civilised package. Goliath are rarely seen outside of their communes, and are often looked upon with wonder and fear during the few times they walk amongst the other races. Goliath are often seen as some of the best warriors around, and often rove in high-end mercenary gangs; their superior size intimidating the smaller races. While they are noted to be gifted Smiths, and are one of the few races that are widely celebrated and welcomed in Dwarven culture, other than their own, due to their artistic capabilities, the Goliath are most famous for their development and use of Rune Magic.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Most Goliath live in isolation from the rest of their species, and rarely have their own settlements, as they are so few in number, often choosing to live alone or in Dwarven settlements, as Surm Tutdrug's chosen seen to have an affinity for the Goliath. Monkdom is also a popular choice amongst the Goliath, being the creators of the Warrior of Elements martial art, and they will use their connection to Giant heritage to empower their strikes. However, many Goliath prefer to worship the Vida Quda as the World Tree, and created the Barbarian Path of the World in tribute to her.

History

The creation of Rune Magic, which focuses on the use of carved sigils to induce magical effects, was originally developed by a sect of Giants who fled The Dragongate Incident. They were said to be a more peaceful variant of Giant, and had been dissenters of both Zemer Epsh and Kukundath, instead following the teachings of The Vida Quda. These Giants referred to the Vida Quda as the World Tree, and used the power gained by their worship of her to block Zemer Epsh’s influence on the children of these Giants. These runes allowed the children to grow outside of Zemer Epsh’s influence, and, although smaller, were perfectly healthy, and soon developed into an entirely separate species over the course of a few generations. This usage of Runes on the Goliath births gave them an innate strength and ability to use Runes. It also allows them to overcome their lingering Giant instincts to destroy and dominate, allowing them to interact with other humanoids, although some scholars state that this is mostly a placebo effect on the Goliath’s part and the Runes to very little to assert that control.
