Champion Arianova "Nova" Nethrani
By far the most well-known Champion of Oristhane is Champion Nova Nethrani. In large part, that recognition comes from her background: she was born into the tight-knit, aristocratic Nethrani family of the Federation of Vay, the same family which produced Madam Astoria Nethrani, the most recent Magelord of Vay. Nova Nethrani is, in fact, a first cousin of Astoria; she grew up as one of the highest-status individuals in the Federation. In the early 690s, Nova's (at the time, quiet) conversion to the faith of Istha ultimately led to her defecting from the Federation to serve in the Dawn Legion in Oristhane, an act perceived as a betrayal both by many members of the Nethrani family and by many Vayan people at large. To this day, Nova Nethrani is still widely considered a traitor within the Federation.
In Oristhane, she thrived. Before being awarded the title of Champion, she was a dedicated legionnaire in the Dawn Legion, and in that role she built up an almost larger-than-life reputation for herself as a daring soldier and peerless leader. She rose through the ranks quickly, earning the title of Lieutenant General by the time she was only 30, in 709 YC. Shortly after, the brand-new High Priestess of Oristhane, Her Radiance Marini of Khara, called her to the Shadowless City to serve as a Champion of Oristhane.
Widely regarded to be a dedicated warrior, fiercely loyal follower of Istha, and charming companion, Nova Nethrani is quite well-liked and -respected among the other Champions. She is also one of those closest to the High Priestess; she began working as a personal guard of the High Priestess within a year of gaining the title of Champion, and has served in that role ever since. Within the Shadowless City, it is well-known that in the past few years, Champion Nova has become not just a preferred personal guard but a favored consort of the High Priestess, though that fact remains a rumor throughout most of Oristhane. Nova Nethrani likely spends more time with the High Priestess than any other individual, a fact which does occasionally make Champion Nova the target of jealousy from those less close to Her Radiance.
