Faestra Geographic Location in Anvimar | World Anvil

Faestra

It is the very error of the moon. She comes more nearer earth than she was wont. And makes men mad.
— Othello, Act V Scene ii
Anvimar's sole moon is named for the goddess Faestra. She travels the night sky, pulling a veil across her face, keeping watch over the world below as the light in the darkness. Her silvery light is said to lead the way to the fae lands, and sets the path to calm seas at night for lucky sailors.

Cycle

Faestra has a 28 day cycle. It begins with her veil completely obscuring her face, then the veil slowly recedes until she shows her full glory, only to one more cross and cover. Faestra's blessings are strongest when her light is brightest.   The phases carry great import in a number of areas. Certain vegetables are best planted on the waxing or the waning moon, others on the old or new. Bloodletting is always best done on the wane. Purgatives prefer the wax. It's best to start a venture with a new or young moon and conclude with the old.   Beyond folklore, the wizards of the Magerium have been noted to gather on certain nights to practice their rites. And the enchanters guild is known to factor in the phases when determining delivery dates. Whether tradition or necessity, only their inner circles may know for certain.

Gateways

The light of Faestra is known to open gateways to other lands, especially the faery kingdoms. Toadstool rings are already dangerous, but one caught in the moonlight is doubly so. Everyone knows when the setting moon passes through the Great Witch Stone in Ujen harbour the sounds of faerie revelry fill the air. The pirate ship Vengance was the terror of the Cymrún Isles until it sailed away on a silvery sea and vanished.   The best known gateways are the Great Witch Stones, and the most famous of these is the one in Ujen Harbour. These large stones have a round hollow in the center and on certain dates align with either the rising or setting moon. They dot the landscape of Korinthia and Cymrun. Reportedly some have been found further afield as well. Their creators are unknown.

Very cool take on the moon-light is magic idea! I like how tied it is both to magic, gateways, but also sailing - the addition of the pirate legend really adds a nice touch too :D   Good luck with the rest of Summer Camp!

What a wonderful article! I love the imagery of the Goddess pulling a veil over her face and slowly revealing it as the moon goes through its cycle. The gateways add so much mystery. Hopefully we can read some more about them at some point.
