Alton

Alton is the capital city of The Kingdom of Southfield. Under the Holy Dwarven Empire, Alton was known as Bloodholm and was the domain of the Bloodberg Clan. The Bloodbergs were particularly brutal occupiers, most crimes and acts of rebellion were punished by death, it was later found out that these convicts were being eaten by the Bloodberg Kleru. The Sumarrians exposed that the Kleru of the Bloodbergs are in fact vampires, who were drinking the blood of their human subjects. During D-Day the city was liberated by Hellkite forces led by the halfling Hellkite bastard Alton Hellkite, also known as "The Little Hellion". The city was renamed in his honor to Alton.
Now the city is thriving under the new Kingdom of Southfield. The city's masses are well-fed and protected from threats. The city guards, knightly orders, and Marshals are all present in the city. Because of that, there is very little crime in the city. The people are generally happy and looking towards a bright future.
The city is surrounded by fields of crops that are owned by the kingdom and used to feed the royal family and the army. Further out are villages and hamlets that usually sell many of their raw goods to merchants or manufacturers in the city.

Religion

In The Kingdom of Southfield, there is no state religion and actually a law forbidding organized religions. Religion is generally something practiced at home. Any temples and churches in Southfield need to be approved by the local Barron or Count, in Alton that is the King himself. He has approved exactly zero churches, meaning that there is not a single temple or church in the city. Some groups gather in private domiciles but most simply practice in their own home or have stopped being religious altogether.

Demographics

The people of Alton are mostly humans. There is also a decent wood elf and half-elf population descended from elves who have left Nessien's Wood. There is also a minor halfling population from Rolling Grain. Not a single dwarf elected to stay after the liberation of Bloodholm.

Government

The city of Alton is theoretically ruled directly by the King of Southfield but he also has a steward who will often deal with local issues while the king is focused on national issues. This steward serves only at the king's will and can be replaced any time.

Defences

The dwarves significantly upgraded the city's defenses, which were kept in place after the liberation. There is a reinforced outer wall that surrounds the city. There is also now a magical barrier that projects from the city's inner wall. This barrier covers what was the holy district under the dwarves, now it is referred to as the bubble district, named for the bubble-like dome that appears over it. All of the city's walls, both outer and inner, are also equipped with swivel ballista, meant for taking down dragons.

Infrastructure

Alton suffered very little actual damage in both the dwarven taking of the continent and in D-Day. The city has many public wells dotted throughout the city. The roads are all cobblestone and there is a working sewer system, which has since been magically enhanced, turning the city's waste into fertilizer sold to nearby farmers as an extra revenue stream for the government.

Districts

The city of Alton is generally separated into 5 areas by its residents.
The Bubble. The Bubble district is at the center of the city and is encompassed by a large magical barrier that projects from the city walls. The barrier stops creatures, projectiles, teleportation, and magic effects from moving through the barrier. This district is the wealthiest in the city, it houses the castle and many upper-class nobles and merchants. It is also home to the Defense Ministry, whose headquarters now stands on the ruins of the dwarven temple. By order of the king, several shelters have also been constructed, in case the city is ever attacked and the population must hide behind the barrier.
Trial Grounds. In the western quarter of the city, the old Lebensweg and military district under the dwarves has been repurposed. It is still focused on martial prowess but now it is home to the headquarters for the Marshals(Southfield's federal police) as well as all of the nation's knightly orders, mercenary companies, and adventurer's guilds. Because of this, the district is also home to the city's best armor and weapon stores.
Northern Ward. A large residential area in the northern section of the city. This is considered the 2nd wealthiest residential area. It is home to a bustling merchant class and houses the city's largest market, Redleaf Bazaar. The north gate which leads into this district oversees most of the city's trade, its road leading to Rolling Grain, Farmville, and Brickerton.
Southern Ward. The southern residential district houses a large part of the city's working class. This is where the factories and foundries can be found. Large facilities that employ hundreds of people working together to produce products. Mostly these are textile factories that turn cotton and wool into cloth, others are tanneries, soapmakers, dye factories, or mass-producing flour and other agricultural goods.
Sinner Slums. The slums are filled with high density housing and small businesses. This is where the sketchy bars are, this area is also the only part of the city where taking drugs is legal. The king recognized that combatting drugs as a whole is not feasible but it can be limited. Dealing drugs is still illegal everywhere but if you are found with a small amount within this area you won't be arrested.  The Sewers. The sewers were used by criminals and smugglers during the dwarven occupation but after the liberation they have been repurposed. Now they provide free housing to all who cannot afford to live on the surface. The city guard regularly patrols the area and the sewer workers make sure the sewers continue to function but there is nothing illegal about setting up camp in the sewers. There are also specific areas where you can pay 1 copper a week to reserve a spot, it comes with a locked chest and a simple cot.
