Humans

One of the most common folk in Tamerea, humans are highly diverse in both appearance and culture. This highly social folk has spread far across the continent by working together to reach goals.   While many are content where they are, others strive to explore deep into unknown lands, adventuring for wealth, acclaim, status, thrill, and knowledge. When they eventually return to human civilization they often bring with them stories, exotic items and fantastical beasts which often end up in libraries, museums, and menageries.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Humans have a typical hominid appearance, being bipedal with bipedal with one head, two arms, and lacking a tail. They are relatively hairless, with what hair they do have is mainly found on the head and face. Physical characteristics are very diverse in Humans, and can loosely correlate to subrace.

Biological Traits

As a whole humans are considered very adaptable folk being able to survive in extreme environments from the deserts to the frozen forests of the north. They are also well known for their endurance.   However magic ability can highly vary among individuals, with some being unable to use magic at all, while some can rival even elder elves.   Compared to many other folk on Tamerea humans are relatively short lived, with only a few individuals reaching 100 years old.

Genetics and Reproduction

Typically monogamous, lower classes have to find their own spouses, while the upper classes usually have arranged marriages. Royalty tends to keep highly detailed records of their bloodlines.   Capable of having children at any point of the year, Humans have a gestation period of about 9 months. Most births result in only one baby, though rarely they can have two, and extremely rarely three. Newborns are completely helpless, and many do not make it to adulthood due to disease, predators raids/war, etc.   As a result humans tend to be highly protective of their infants, sometimes to the point of adopting orphaned infants of non-humans. However not all humans are like this, and stories of infants being killed or abandoned in the woods due to illness or lack of food are not unheard of.

Ecology and Habitats

Native to the Firadas Prairie, Humans have since migrated throughout the Tamerea, and have adapted to many different environments so long as they have some kind of access to food and water.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Humans are capable of eating a wide variety of different foods, with location and social class dictating what kinds of foods are available to them. These foods can also include things that other folk would consider poisonous.   Having mastered the art of agriculture, humans have come to raise or grow the vast majority of the food they eat, though they still hunt/gather certain foods. Many foods, especially meats must be cooked to reduce the chance for food poisoning. They have also developed several methods to make their food supplies last longer, usually by drying it out or preserving it.   Humans aren't satisfied with just eating plain meals, and have developed countless dishes by mixing different ingredients and adding different spices.

Biological Cycle

They don't physically change with the passing of seasons, instead they change behaviors and clothing types.

Family Life

Adoption and the Treatment of Orphans

If a child has been recently orphaned they are typically sent the closest living relative, however if they have no living relatives, or are rejected by their relatives, they are sent to an orphanage. Some children may be adopted during their time at the orphanage, but most often they stay there until they are considered adults and are then sent to find their own way in the world. Occasionally humans have been known to adopt non-human children and raise them as their own.

Treatment of Magic Users

How humans view and treat magic users highly vary from kingdom to kingdom, though there has been a general trend of them being more accepted. Some cultures view magic usage with suspicion and magic users are persecuted for when the slightest thing goes wrong.   In one of these kingdoms, children are tested for the ability to use magic at a very early age. If they found to have this ability, they are taken from their families and raised in special schools that teach them to use magic to benefit the kingdom. This kingdom teaches the kids early on that their only purpose in life is to serve the kingdom. They aren't allowed to see their family again, they can't pursue any romantic relationships, they aren't allowed to own property, they must live in special quarters, they can't leave their special quarters without permission, etc. If the kids rebel or the kingdom determines that they are uncontrollable, they are culled to protect the kingdom.
