The Battle of Dinan

The Conflict

Prelude

Konan, having abandoned his position threatening Avranches and Dol, fled Battle of Menez-Mikael for the Renk River, harried by the longships of Gwilherm of La Manche and Hereweald of Kameled. After a week-long chase, he arrived in Dinan, hoping to rally his forces and strike back and the Manchais host.

Deployment

Supported by Longships along the Renk River, Gwilherm torched Konan's fleet, removing his form of escape. He took positions on the cliffs to the East and West of the city below, effectively surrounding it, beginning the siege.

The Engagement

After a little over a month, Konan realized that no aid was forthcoming from his political rivals in Naoned or Gwened, and his calls to the barons of the Penn-ar-Bedd similarly falling on deaf ears. Konan surrendered, passing the keys of the city over the wall on a lance to Gwilherm.

Outcome

Konan's campaign against Dol and Avranches crashes to a halt. Humiliated by Gwilherm and abandoned by his vassals, Konan's reign will end within 2 years, when he is assassinated during an ill-fated revenge campaign against La Manche.

Aftermath

Prince Hereweald is unimpressed by the seeming incompetence of the Manchais forces and Gwilherm, having seen the disastrous, albeit successful, crossing of the Kouenon River and the shoddy siegework at Dinan. If not for Konan's own critical missteps, Gwilherm's campaign would surely fail. Throughout the campaign, however, he had been lavished with gifts of arms and horses, and had even discussed marriage to one of Gwilherm's sisters in hopes of strengthening his own claim to the throne of Kameled.   But Gwilherm had other plans that had begun as soon as his villainous vassal Wido had captured the princeling. The entire campaign, from the poor strategic choices and the shoddy execution, had been a ruse to take advantage of the heir apparent and trick him into underestimating the Manchais forces. With the gifts, Gwilherm added to the Princelings dle, gaining a magical advantage over him. After the campaign, he extracted an oath of fealty from Hereweald at Rotomagus, tricking the prince into creating an ere-hud with Gwilherm. The cunning warrior would use both of these to his advantage in claiming his real pirze... Kameled itself.
