Maudez Island and the Brehat Archipelago

Geography

The Brehat Archipelago is a collection of rocky pink-granite islands located in the Mor Breizh, a short distance Northeast from the city of Landreger, although their rule falls under the control of the Lordship of Goelo, located further to the Southeast, a relic of an ancient grant by the King of Dumnonia to a group of monks who initially settled the island. The Brehat islands are hilly, dotted with inland ponds of fresh, brackish, and salt water.   On the North of the largest island, the rocky Pointe du Paon is popular with young girls for its purported oracular powers. When a rock is skipped across the rocky inlet, the number of skips is claimed to correspond with the number of years before they are married. A lighthouse adorns the rocky spit at the northern edge.   At low tide, the island of Enez-Maudez is connected with the mainland by a muddy sand flat, separated from the rest of Brehat by a wide, deep channel.

Localized Phenomena

Off of the nearby town of Pempoull, an army of Draugr made of the bodies of those lost at sea, labour in an undersea quarry, causing great waves.

History

Enez-Maudez and the Brehat isles were initially settled by a group of monks under a grant by Fragan of Leon, establishing a small monastery on the isolated island, sharing the archipelago with small fishing villages.   The monastery, home to a large library, was a frequent target of pirates and viking raiders, who destroyed the settlement and drove out the monks on numerous occasions, most notably following the defeat of Hastings Fireforged, when Formorian raiders leveled the monastery. Each time, the monks returned to rebuild.   This changed during the Heresy of Albi. Nathair refugees, fleeing Tolosa and Arle from the Inquisition and Genocide for the relative safety of the North. A group of Nathair scholars were taken in by the monks, in direct violation of the orders of the Southern Church. When this was discovered the Order of Albi retaliated with a detachement of Iron-Blooded, massacring the inhabitants and stringing their bodies from the sails of the windmills along the coast of the island. This event served as a major rift between the Church and Konstanza de Leon, leading to open conflict between the Duchy of Breizh and the Duchy of Akitainia.   Some Nathair, lead by Vivienne Lac-Plavin, survived the attack and assisted Konstanza's forces. After the war, the group reformed the chapterhouse and library, carrying on the legacy of the monks slaughtered sheltering them.

Tourism

Most of the islands are uninhabited, by Bediz, but ruins of pre-imperial burial sites, Imperial villas and early church monasteries are scattered throughout the region. The Hoseguéannets and the Jetin clan of the Kriores occasionally make use of the ruins. Smugglers make ample use of the remote area, a convenient launch point to nearby harbours and shores.
