Kont Fulk , III (a.k.a. The Black)

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Fulk III was the son of Geoffery Greymantle, the Kont of Anjev during a tumultous era of war between Anjev and Letha. His father had fought against Konan I of Roazhon during the political tumult of The Poisoner's Game, which came to its conclusion during Fulk's reign.   Konan, having orchestrated the murder of his Lethan rivals, knew that his reign would never be secure as long as Fulk remained stable in Angers. Despite being married to Fulk's sister, the paranoid Dug led a force into Angers, hoping to ambush Fulk upon his return from the Coronation of Gallian King Robert II. Fulk foiled the attack, killing Konan's son and chasing Konan back to Naoned, which he besieged. Konan fled towards Roazhon, but found his pace outmatched, and was forced to turn and fight within the Barony of Redon, where he was killed.   With his sister as regent and the next Dug of Letha an easily controlled child, Fulk turned his attention to securing his own lands, threatened by Odette Blaez, Kontez of Tours. His first wife, Eliza of Vendome was popular with her subjects, but when she failed to give him a child, he accused her of adultery. She managed to escape, seizing the castle for a brief time, but she fell from the ramparts and was burned at the stake. Fulk set fire to the town in retribution for their short-lived rebellion.   Fulk was plagued by Envorad and was driven mad by the guilt, taking a long pilgrimage to Asturias, Avinhon and Lupino to atone.   Fulk turned his attention to securing Anjev, gaining control of numerous small lordships bordering Cenomannie and Touraine, while fighting against the Duchy of La Manche, Touraine and the County of Poitou. He briefly captured Chinon and Tours at several points in his lifetime, but was unable to hold either before his death.

Personality Characteristics

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Fulk was well regarded as a fearsome warrior, renowned for both his military strategy and his skill at horsemanship. The latter, renowned on the battlefield, also made him a fixture at Hastiludes and Tournaments.   Fulk was illiterate, never learning to read over the course of his life.

Social

Reign

Fulk's reign was dominated by his military campaigns, waging wars against Akitainia, Blaez, Letha and Poitou.   Fulk oversaw the construction of over 100 castles and fortified farms across Anjev, securing his border against enemies to the North, West and South. A large number of these were created to encircle and besiege Tours, the primary regional rival to Anger's power.   Additionally, a patron of The Southern Church, Fulk was responsible for the establishment and construction of dozens of monasteries, abbeys and churches within his domain. Despite being a lifelong illiterate, he created and endowed a school for the poor in his domain.

Contacts & Relations

Fulk's primary political opponent was Odette Blaez, Kont of Tours, the two both racing to secure the Duchy and their place within Gallia's political order.
