Keith was Nicola Crandall's boyfriend for several years while she lived in Indianapolis. When Nicola became pregnant with Ella Crandall, Keith told Nicola he wasn't ready to be a father. Nicola cut ties with him and moved back to English.
When Nicola returned years later, Keith had started the Covenant of World's End, a cult/army that was working to begin
Ragnarök. He had recruited Muriel Crandall.

Keith was the only child of an emotionally distant couple.
His father, Floyd, never showed afffection and often told a very young Keith not to cry. He had a "be a man" attitude about everything.
Keith's mother, Sherrie, preferred to be busy outside the home than to be with her husband, who she claims was a disappointment, and her son, Keith, who she often berated as not living up to her expectations.
Keith grew up with the brazen pseudo-confidence of a man who knows he will never be good enough. This gave him a good amount of charisma, but no faith in his ability to be who others thought he was or could be.
His relationship with Nicola had been a life-changing one. She was one of the few people who he admired enough to believe when she said he was capable, though his faith in that was temporary. When she told him she was pregnant, he saw how vulnerable she was in that moment, and mistook it for weakness. He felt it was his fault she had become less-than, and he panicked. He spent the next 6 years regretting how he'd handled that situation.
When Keith was approached to begin Ragnarök, the God who recruited him used these characteristics against him. The deity promised Keith that Nicola and Ella, his daughter, would be safe. Keith felt that it was the only way he could do right by his fragmented family.
Keith used the tithes he'd collected from his army to fund their activities, but the cult ended up more successful than he had ever imagined. He took the extra moneys and put it into real estate for the Covenant of World's End, which he left to Ella, and into a life insurance policy left to his daughter as well.
When he died, Nicola told Keith to not try so hard "next time." This was her way of letting Keith know that he had gone much farther than she or Ella had needed or wanted him to go. This was in direct opposition to the attitude of Keith's parents.
