Malmund

Bridging the gap between Southern Vold with the barbaric outlands is Malmund. First raised from the ground up by Tieflings around 1300 years ago, before The Order existed, the city has amassed a rich and impressive history in the short period it has been stood. Malmund is a vast and illustrious city, and has garnered riches through its trade. Malmund trades in anything that comes out of the ground, and there is plenty of it beneath the streets of the Red City. Being on the outskirts of Southern Vold's border has meant that Malmund was quite often raided by the barbarians of the outlands before The Ward was built. Old Malmund Town sits outside of the Ward's reach, a ruin compared to the glistening streets the other side.   Malmund, as a result of its trade, is full with life from all corners of the world, and has also become a residence for some of Alnheim's most rich and powerful, attracting a fair share of crime and intrigue. Malmund's vigorous and decadent visage is but a facade for many of Vold's shadiest secrets and darkest deeds.

Demographics

Malmund was built by Tieflings around 1300 years ago, and as a result, Tieflings make up around 1.5 million people inhabiting the city. Humans are also a strong presence in southern Vold, making up 1 million. The remaining 1.3 million are made up of various species of Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, and others. Malmund is also home to the Dragonborn Kin Clan, who are around 250 in number.

Government

Malmund is under the rule of The Order, and thus abides by their rules and regulations. The Order representative for the Human/Tiefling settlements is High Councillor Vastra Kesh of Solspyd, however she is aided by a small council made up of councillors of each race from each city.

Defences

Malmund was left very vulnerable to attacks from southern barbarians until the construction of The Ward. Malmund is now home to the Voldian Naval Academy, and so is full of sailors and marines, as well as the city guard. As The Third Orcish Rebellion is currently in full swing, most of Malmund's naval power is garrisoned in Solspyd.

Industry & Trade

Malmund's working classes are far from destitute. Due to the value placed on Malmund's primary export, Mithral, and any and all of the other precious materials dug from the ground, there is plenty of wealth to go around. The majority of the populace are either in the business of mining, selling the produce of what has been mined, or shipping what has been mined around the world.

Infrastructure

Malmund operates on a system of trams, that are also used to transport materials directly from Malmund Mining Company's premises straight to the docks for shipment all around the world. Malmund, due to its orientation along the coast, deals predominantly with Øsstplassian trade, while Solspyd takes care of the Western world. The roads are paved wherever one walks, even in the poorer districts. An underground canal system, separate to the sewers, is used by the richest citizens to avoid the rabble. A central mine canal splits the city down the centre. On the outskirts of the city is the stronghold of Kin Town, the long time residence of The Kin Clan.

Architecture

Malmund earned its nickname, "The Red City" as it has been soaked in blood several times throughout history, not because it actually is red. The buildings of Malmund are by and large tall sloping gothic structures that join in terraces, separated by large courtyards and tramlines. The buildings' rooves are plated with Mithral, and some of Malmund's more decadent buildings, the bars, casinos, and galleries are adorned with intricate carvings, filled in with gemstones.   In the more working class areas of Malmund, the building material is the same, however the buildings often reach taller, some into towering skyscrapers that house hundreds of families. This area became affectionately known as The Cobbled Jungle. The inhabitants of this area are however far from poor, and enjoy the comforts and amenities that Malmund has to offer just as much as their richer neighbours.   The Deathdome stands proud in the centre of Malmund. A vast dome structure made of gilded cobblestone, with a crystalline glass tip to the roof is the main attraction for miles around. Rich and poor alike frequent to watch fights, races, and other sporting events that almost always end with bloodshed.   On its southernmost point is The Ward. The Ward is made of a similar material to the rest of the city walls, but it is not part of them. The Ward is a wall that stands at nearly 250 metres tall, and is split into three segments, with stone and wood bridges connecting the segments sporadically. It spans the entire width of Southern Vold and acts as a huge military garrison, housing nearly 7 million troops. The Ward is magically guarded on the outer side, designed to protect Vold from ranged assault, and to disintegrate anything that attempts to pass through uninvited.   Beyond the Ward is Old Malmund Town, a part of Malmund that was ransacked and burned to the ground by barbarians before the construction of the Ward. Its ruin still sits on the other side of the Ward, and can often be seen to be moving with the activity of bandits in the moonlight.

Geography

Malmund is a coastal city in Southern Vold, and hence its surrounding landscape is an arid desert, met by the cold blue wash of The Sea of Rubies.

Natural Resources

The mines of Malmund are considered to contain some of the most precious materials in Alnheim, including Mithral, and many other gems and metals.
