The Graylands

A land of perpetual autumn

Named for the heavy rains that constantly cloud over the skies, the Graylands were one of the Caleian Empire's westernmost provinces, and one of the first that the Legions abandoned when the Capital fell. Being at the edge of the Empire, the Graylands have gone undisturbed for most of the Imperial Age and as a result, they've kept their old culture in a way few other provinces have. Before the conquest of the steppes, Rostavan raiders were a constant menace for the Graylander duchies. Now that the legions are gone, a northern menace is rising once more, though not from the Rostavans but rather from the mountains. Great hordes of kobolds have been pouring out for years now and they have nearly subjugated all of the steppes and are pushing south, into the Graylands. The countryside isn't safe anymore and few travel alone anymore. As a result of this kobold threat, the five duchies that had previously ruled the Graylands as fierce rivals have banded together in a loose confederation of sorts, the Arainverian League. The League has faced numerous challenges so far, most recently the fall of Graymouth to the kobold hordes.

Geography

The Graylands are a collection of hills and rocky valleys, nested between the Great Mountains, the steppes and the Sinus Occidentis, a large bay separating the populous east from the western territories. To the north lie the Rotsavan steppes, a vast stretch of grassy plains that stretches all the way up to the edge of the North. Due to their proximity to the mountains, the Graylands receive significantly more snow in the winter than its neighbors east of the gulf, something which its denizens proudly boast of to any eastern traveler.

Author's Notes

A Commune in this case is not an organization that shares resources equally. Think of it as basically a small republic spanning only one city where the mayor is also president.   **Artwork by Klaus Pillon. I don't own any of the artwork. Credits to other artwork may be W.I.P.
