Personal history
As the only child of King Willian and Queen Jayda, Valda had the full attention of her tutors and became a competent part of the council--unusual for the child of a monarch in The Hylands--at age seventeen. Valda was always deeply interested in politics as she grew up, and when Willian died in battle in 1980 (at the age of 53) and Queen Jayda abdicated, it was easy for the people to trust Valda as the next queen. She married Lorcan Archer early the next year and had their first daughter, Twilight, near the end of the year.
After her other four children were born, it became clear that King Julen Andromeda wasn't content with his conquest of Titania and had set his sights on Arken, as well. Fearing for the safety of her children, Valda had Elk, Sarabrina, Leafman, and Saria through the Crossgate to Earth, where they remained for several years.
Education
She was trained by the finest tutors in The Hylands, both in usual school subjects and in charisma, strategy, etc. in preparation for her ascension to the throne.

Motivation
Her priorities, in order, are: faith, kingdom, family. Her faith always comes first, but she will always do her best to do what's best for her kingdom, and then what's best for her family. She believes that, in almost every instance, what's best for the kingdom will also be what's best for her family. To some extent, she weighs whether or not something would be good for her family as a way to determine whether or not it's going to be good for the kingdom.

Twilight is much closer to Valda than any of her siblings are, but there's still a distance between them. While Twilight trusts her mother completely, she's never felt fully understood by Valda and usually prefers to talk to Lorcan. Twilight and Valda mostly discuss politics, and Twilight has learned much of what she knows about governance from her mother. Valda struggles to understand Twilight, simply because they handle emotions so differently, but she does as well as she can.

Dear reader, I'm aware that it makes no sense for Zelda to have sent away only her four youngest children and kept Twilight with her. It's a mess my seven-year-old self left for me that I'm trying to figure out how to clean up without ruining the existing family dynamics.
