Fogg and Shael met when Tarron Wayfold brought the former to the castle for a Dewin apprenticeship. At the time, Shael was four and Fogg was ten. Though they knew each other in passing for the first couple of years, it was in the year he turned six that Shael, true to his inquisitive nature, began listening in on Tarron and Fogg's lessons. Fogg was the first to notice but said nothing to his mentor, assuming that Shael would either lose interest or get himself caught, but when Shael continued to listen and Tarron continued not to notice, Fogg grew impressed by the younger boy. After a few days, Fogg sought out Shael and found him in the observatory trying to execute one of the Dewin spells Tarron had taught. Fogg gave Shael a couple of pointers on how to perfect the spell and that was the beginning of their friendship. When Tarron did finally notice Shael's eavesdropping, after a couple of weeks, he appreciated Shael's dedication and skill and agreed that he could listen in on certain lessons but would have to sit out of others, an arrangement that everyone was happy with. Shael and Fogg continued to work together on spells, and Fogg came to trust Shael to even help him sort out what he was doing wrong on spells Shael hadn't been present for, due to Shael's knack for magical science. Over time, Fogg and Shael came to trust each other so much that they could discuss the matter of which of them was Tarron's apprentice (Fogg often said he wasn't sure Shael shouldn't have been chosen instead, for all his skill, but Shael was perfectly content with his astronomical studies). To this day, they're as close as brothers.

Tarron and Shael met when Tarron came to Avross Castle to teach his Dewin apprentice, Fogg Canty. Shael, true to his inquisitive nature, began listening in on Tarron and Fogg's lessons as soon as he was old enough to understand them. Though Fogg caught Shael much earlier, Tarron didn't catch him until a couple weeks into the lessons. Tarron was impressed by the boy's dedication and skill--according to Fogg, and corroborated by the boy's own performance--and allowed him to sit in on certain lessons, though others were off-limits. Tarron watched his two students grow together and help each other until they were closer than brothers, even to the point of bringing Tarron a discussion about which of them should continue as his main apprentice. Tarron offered to give Shael as a recommendation to one of his fellow Dewin who hadn't yet chosen an apprentice--and indeed, he would have selected Shael himself if he'd been only a few years older when Tarron had chosen an apprentice--but Shael turned down the offer, saying he'd prefer to stick to his astronomy studies.

Twilight and Shael were acquaintances from the time they were born, but it wasn't until they were about five that they started to become friends. They were both already avid readers, and as they got older they found that they also loved stargazing. The two are always eager to encourage each others' passions, study together, and they still spend evenings in the observatory together. Twilight used her wealth as a princess to buy Shael hard-to-get birthday gifts from Remera, including a state-of-the-art telescope and a wristwatch, and she plans to fund his mission to space for as long as he needs. As Twilight's duties to her kingdom have sucked up a lot of her time, she and Shael haven't stayed as close as they were as children, but they're still always there for each other.

Though Shael and Sarabrina knew each other briefly before the Elfbournes were sent to Earth, they were both quiet and didn't really interact; their encounters were primarily while they were both sitting in the library reading. When Sarabrina returned, however, they were reintroduced nearly immediately when Twilight heard that Sarabrina had nurtured a love for astronomy in her time away. Shael and Sarabrina hit it off right away and now they spend time together in the observatory as often as they can. Sarabrina loves to watch Shael work and can't help but adopt his enthusiasm. Shael ends up being instrumental in introducing Sarabrina to the new-to-her constellations and making her feel more at home.
