Orcs Species in Alendia | World Anvil

Orcs

Orcs are one of the youngest races in Alendia. Most of them live in Drakthirr but some of them can also be found on other islands and continents. However, those "traveling" orcs either live in very small tribes or are integrated into other civilizations. Creatures of other races see orcs as powerful, physically strong, brutal, and aggressive.

Appearance

Orcs usually have very bulky builds, independent from their subrace. They are relatively large, usually over 1.8m (6') which often leads to the assumption, that orcs are somehow related to giants. The skin color of orcs can vary a lot, from classical green over dark grey and black to brown or even red. The color highly depends on their subrace and ancestors, but all of them shared porcine faces that featured lower canines that resembled boar tusks. Many also had wolf-like ears that were pointed on the ends, similar to elves, which suggests a certain relation to elves as well. Since very wild uncontrolled intercourse of different subraces, many orcs can not be assigned to one particular subrace. It is assumed that the existence of the original subraces was lost about 7000 b. BF.

History

For a detailed timeline of orcs, look up History of the Orcs.

Culture

Religion

Orcs believe in the orc pantheon. It is one of the simplest pantheons in Alendia and contains just six different dieties. Since war, fighting, and death play major roles in the life of many orcs, all six dieties are pretty much based on these things. Other than the dieties from The Pantheon of the Twelve-Gods, the orc gods weren't mortals who ascended godhood after their death but instead have always been immortal dieties. The orc gods are:
  • Gruumsh One-eye, a greater god of storms and war, and orcs. He is the leader of the orc deities.
  • Luthic, lesser goddess of fertility, medicine, and orc females; the consort of Gruumsh.
  • Ilneval, lesser god of war strategy, orc cross-breeds, and destruction.
  • Bahgtru, god of brute strength.
  • Shargaas, god of darkness and night, stealth, thieves, and undead.
  • Yurtrus, a feared god of death and disease.

Lifestyle

Orcs have a very short lifespan. They reach adulthood at the age of 11 and usually live a little longer than 40 years, given they don't fall in battle. The lifestyle and society of orcs are extremely warlike. If a tribe isn't at war, they are usually planning it out. Orcs believe, that to survive they have to appease their gods by slaying many enemies in battle as sacrifices, leading to the general belief of other races being inferior to orcs. Male orcs dominate society due to their natural advantage in strength. Female orcs often served the purpose of reproduction or aiding sick or wounded combatants. It was very common for orcs to pride themselves on the number of wives and sons. All orcs no matter their gender have a martial education. Orcs didn't have any profession but warriors. Things like smithing, building, and hunting were more of a side job for orcs.

Government

Orcs live in tribes, often also called hordes. In Drakthirr there are six major orc tribes: Each horde has a different leader, who often assigns other orcs as generals or so-called 'bosses' to take over important tasks. The relationship between different tribes changed a lot throughout the history of orcs and it wasn't uncommon for conflicts and quarrels to erupt between different tribes or even within a single tribe. However, most tribes bargain confederations, allying against a mutual foe. It is well known that such alliances have a very short lifespan and are often broken even before reaching their purpose.
The real backbone of the society and government of orcs were goblins and goblinoids. Goblins are an integrated part of the orcish lifestyle and often serve as cheap laborers, slaves, or meatshields. After discovering tribes of goblins, The Eternal Slayers decided to capture and enslave some of the goblins instead of just killing them. Soon the goblins reproduced rapidly and turned out to be easily controllable workers, perfectly suitable to take over simple tasks. Goblins are often treated very badly, even worse than war prisoners or criminals. But due to the physical strength of the orcs, the goblins can be easily controlled.

    The first orcs
    Civil action

It is estimated that the first orcs arrived in Alendia around 10000 b. BF. Their origin is unknown. They either might be the result of some intercourse, champions sent by their gods, or sailors who eventually arrived in Drakthirr and Ephea. It is said, that the first orcs arrived in Drakthirr around the Rippled Coast and settled the continent. Compared to other races, orcs didn't found large cities but rather lived in hordes, roaming and plundering the lands.

    Thirst for war
    Military action

Orgs are very aggressive and energetic creatures, which often led to quarrels and fights within the group. Moving northwards they discovered the large mountains and spotted different chaotic creatures living there like minotaurs, ogres, centaurs, and many more. To appease their gods and sate their hunger for war, the orcs attack these creatures and quickly decimate the population of monsters within the mountains.

    Dwarves
    Discovery, Exploration

Expanding further north, the orcs eventually discover the dwarves living in the central mountains of Ephea. The orc-dwarf war
    Military action

The orcs had overestimated themself and their lack of cooperation resulted in major defeats against the dwarves. Although the stout folk is known to be very defensive, they used the fact, that the orcs cleared out the monsters from the southern mountains and expanded, pushed the orcs back, and claimed that territory for themselves to become the true rulers over the mountains. The orcs were forced out of the mountains and back to the flatlands.

    Discovery of Humans
    Discovery, Exploration

Far in the east, in Ephea, the orcs discover the humans. They were settling the empty lands and ruins left behind by the dragons and seemed to plan on settling the eastern coast. Humans turned out as perfect targets for the orcs, not too small, but also not as strong as the dwarves in the mountains, perfect creatures to fight and slaughter.

    Losing ground
    Military action

At the beginning of the war, the orcs got exactly what they were looking for. Countless humans were slaughtered, killed, and sacrificed to the orcish gods. However, slowly the enemy adapted and used advanced technology, just like magic to overwhelm the forces of the orcs, slowly pushing them back. Since the orcs were living in hordes, the loss of territory did no big harm. The humans managed to push them further away from their big cities, yet it was impossible to guard any borders and villages from sudden raids.

    The first holy expedition
    Military action

Rondra assigns thousands, maybe even tens of thousands trained and educated soldiers to a group called 'The holy expedition' with the goal to conquer major parts of Ephea from the orcs. The morale of the army was outstanding, not just getting the blessings of the old gods, but also having a clear motivation to fight against the hated foe of the orcs for justice and vengeance. Because of years of preparation, the technological advantage, and the modern structured appearance on the battlefield, the army is able to push the orcs back quickly, claiming major parts of south-eastern Ephea and advances further to the west. After 30 years of war, they reach the highlands in the west, unable to make further progress, so they settle there, constructing huge fortification systems like the Black Fortress and Feuerfels, which shall serve as outstanding defensive points.

    Boxed in
    Miscellaneous

Restricted by the humans in the east, the dwarves in the north, and the sylvans in the west, the orcs look for a way to expand. Since the orcs didn't have to defend any territory, they managed to lure in a few troops from the dwarves and humans, and once these troops moved out of their protective environment, it was an easy task for the orcs to attack and kill them. Only the dryads in the west didn't seem to be interested in leaving the forest.

    Burning the woods
    Disaster / Destruction

Ancient history scrolls of dwarves report a giant fire in Drakthirr. It's assumed that the orcs started to burn parts of the forest to lure out the dryads and kill them. Further, after the woods were burned, some orcs crossed them and expanded to the west.

The exact date or year of this formation is unknown, but the orcs still recall the names of the first different tribes: The First Blades, The Forest Killaz, and The Slaughterers were the first three major tribes to prevail.

    The dancing shaman
    Celestial

Orcs were known to be exclusively martial creatures until 9641 b. BF. An orc named Xig climbed the western mountains, insecure if the dwarves were able to spread over there. Despite their presence, he managed to avoid contact. At the end of his road, he claimed to have spoken with Grummsch, who showed him the way to acquire powerful magical strengths. To prove it, Xig channeled his energy and made fire rain from the sky onto the dwarves. It was said, that he was dancing during the ritual, and was therefore called The dancing shaman. Xig counts as the eldest and father of all shamans.

    Discovery of the goblins
    Discovery, Exploration

The Forest Killaz expanded further to the west, eventually arriving at the coast and another forest. Living up to their name, they invaded the woods, expecting to find dryads. Instead, they found various tribes of goblins and goblinoids. At first, the orcs attacked and killed them, however, they decided that the goblins were too weak to slaughter for their dieties and enslaved them instead. Goblins turned out to be very cheap, controllable laborers and exceptional meatshields in fights.
