Gwenth Character in Alendia | World Anvil

Gwenth

Gwenth is the goddess of war and thunder in the The Pantheon of the Twelve-Gods. She met withRondra in 9737 b. BF and joined him as his first companion for 'The Divine Four'. She was added to the Four Quarter Pantheon in 8990 b. BF by King Secular as the god of war.

Appearance

Over time the depiction of Gwenth changed a lot. The current one, which is believed to be her real appearance is a muscular woman with long red hair. Initially, Gwenth was depicted as a male person, since she was known to be one of Rondra's best generals. Being a woman was unimaginable for the people (especially the men) back then and those who knew about her, disguised the truth ensuring the dominance of the male gender. Gwenth's sex was corrected in 8796 b. BF after allowing females gods to belong to the pantheon. However, many Dwarves claimed Gwenth to be a dwarf herself, and therefore a lot of adjustments were made in Gwenth's depictions, making sure to draw her large enough to not get mistaken for a dwarf. She is often depictured wielding different weapons, most popular her giant maul Ulgarf. Gwenth's most common character traits are strength and endurance.

Biography

Overview

Not much is known about Gwenth's early life. She attempted a career in the military, which was presumably hard for a woman. However, she achieved the best results and eventually became a general of a division of the human army. In 9737 b. BF,Rondra met her and saw her as a powerful creature. She and her soldiers were promoted to Rondra's personal guards but in 9735 b. BF, Rondra, Gwenth, and Ker formed a trio to take over special tasks for the military. Gwenth's former generals were assigned with a new commander and trained to an elite unit, which is still known as 'Gwenth's Lads' up to this day.
Gwenth helped Rondra to slay the Ogre in the west in 9729 b. BF, where they met Talvin and formed the group of 'The Divine Four'. For the following 28 years, Gwenth traveled with Rondra, Talvin, and Ker, slaying orcs and other dangerous monsters. After Talvin left the group 9701 b. BF, Gwenth was trying to keep the group alive by looking for someone to replace Talvin. She introduced Phex to Rondra in 9699 b. BF, who turned out to be the most potent candidate to replace Talvin. However, Phex left the group one year later, and the search for a worthy successor started over.
Eventually in 9660 b. BF, Gwenth grew tired of looking for someone and instead followed a call she sensed from the mountains. She parted with Rondra but stayed in contact via letters and messages. She told Rondra, that she retired as an honorable veteran and just did a few little services as mercenaries here and there. Rondra mentioned in his journals, that he suspected, that Gwenth didn't tell him everything. However, nothing about Gwenth's late-life is known for sure.

Influence

As the name says, the church of Gwenth is dedicated to the goddess of war and thunder. In times of the Four Quarter Pantheon, some churches, especially chapels close to the war front, were mainly visited by soldiers, generals, and war clerics, praying for Gwenths protection in an upcoming fight asking to keep the souls of the fallen comrades safe. With that, these churches were indirectly and later officially dedicated to Gwenth and serve nowadays as a sacred place for Clerics, soldiers, and sometimes even paladins. Despite Gwenth being the goddess of war, her churches are a peaceful place, just like all other churches and temples, but the worship and services differ a lot. Gwenth is worshipped by soldiers and has a strong influence among Dwarves.
