Personal history
Gisla is from a large, noble family in the Spehon Mountains. Her upbringing was comfortable but rigid. With many siblings and even more cousins, her demure persona caused her to fade into the background as she was not interested in many of the classic Mirari life goals such as becoming a castle guard, huntress, or blacksmith. She was more interested in flora and fauna, and the cycle of life, which in the cold, snowy mountains, were few and far between. Her parents were rather unhappy she wanted to be nothing more than some apothecarian or cook, jobs which were seen as beneath her status. Although she claims she did not have many hobbies growing up, Gisla did occasionally fence.
She grew tired of the long, dark winters, and the fact her interests and skills were not prized. She applied to study in Beltane, a fairly new queendom south of her. Her parents did not support her desire to wander without traditional education in her hometown, and so she went to the only guild she was qualified for and could afford- the Clockmakers. She reached Beltane in approximately 660s and had the privilege of training under the head death-dealer, Mehrdad, who was looking for apprentices. At first she was unsure. The Mirari do not believe in executions and allow their condemned to fight for their freedom. She knew by taking this job, she would likely be an unwelcome guest in her family should they find out. However, the Clockmakers paid well, and she completed her training while saving up to venture further south where the climate was milder and the plantlife was more abundant. She hoped to reach the Gheal Valley or Rhudd and find apprenticeship as a chemist there. On her journey, she met a beautiful Gwraig named Aberfa who pointed her to sources of food and protected her from Dolomedes raiders. She asked Gisla if they could travel to the sea together, which Gisla was fine with, as a town called Hol Gheal was on the way to the coast. She learnt through their travels together, about the Phoneutrians, and how they as a tribe made up for most of the medics in the area- Gisla was unlikely to find an apprenticeship so easily, as the ruling Belenakos had a very tenuous grasp on alchemy and much of their discoveries were baneful. Still, she did not want to go back to the north. She and Aberfa stayed with the Latrodectes tribes for some time as they traveled, and Gisla learnt a lot from the harsh environment under which they lived- especially the concept of mercy. They reached Hol Gheal, finally, but before Aberfa would let Gisla settle down into the town or meet the Earlen, she asked Gisla to let her see the ocean. Gisla went to the ocean with her and they watched the sun set. Aberfa seemed to want to embrace Gisla, and as they had been lovers during their travels, Gisla reciprocated. However, Aberfa tried to drag her into the water with her, stating she wanted to be with Gisla forever, in water (seemingly) free of pollution. Gisla argued frantically she would drown but Aberfa would not listen. Gwragedd do not know that they cannot survive in salt water, had Gisla known, perhaps she would have caught on a long time ago. Aberfa had always wanted to go to the ocean, but never alone. As Gisla was wrenched in a desperate embrace, her former lover slowly disintegrated into foam, leaving only a comb behind. Gisla did not know much about the legends of the Gwragged, nor that their combs granted immortality, but she would wear the comb as a sign of remembrance for Aberfa until she discovered it by accident some years later.
