Kyuzh-magh

The south-eastern region of Moraea is a rugged landscape, with perilous wildlife. It was the original home of the Goblinoids, before the Legions' early expansion saw the tribes enslaved as the first auxiliaries of the Horde. Under Legion rule, the area was a vast barracks-nation called Akhtakhzhat (home of the Horde) and after the Uprising was reclaimed by the former Horde and renamed Kyuzh-magh (lit. home of the war host, sometimes translated as 'the domain of war,' but more accurately the 'domain of warriors'.) While the original foundation of Kyuzh-magh was simply a territory to house the various bands of post-Horde goblinoid, it became organised - mostly under the influence of the Three Institutions of early Hobgoblin culture: the Monastery of the Iron Mind, the Devastator's League and the Circle of Spears - and after a failed attempt at a retributive invasion of the Darklands, evolved into a modern and successful nation.   Kyuzh-magh today retains many of the trappings of hobgoblin militarism. Fortified settlement of various sizes project control and defence into the surrounding countryside. While areas of the wilderness remain as dangerous as ever, most of the country is now civilised to a greater or lesser degree. These settlements, once simple fortifications, are called bakhar, or tent cities, and organised on the same hierarchical framework as a warband. All officers of the state are addressed by military styles, regardless of whether they hold any military rank.   The majority of the population remains goblonoid, with hobgoblins and Goblins filling most governmental roles. Hobgoblins dominate administrative and military command' roles; technical and mercantile roles are mostly filled by goblins; hobgoblins and goblins share academic roles; hobgoblins and Bugbears share rural occupations; goblins dominate mining work as bugbears do industrial positions; and all morphemes are represented in military fields.   Kyuzh-magh has a history that many of its people find shameful, having been built, in the years after the Uprising, on a foundation which perpetuated the Horde's dependence on slave labour. Communities of Humans, petari and others, descended from freed slaves, still occupy 'free zones,' largely autonomous enclaves granted to them by the Bakhar-kha Zemes ik Sao ('all-cities declaration of emancipation.') Many free zones are lawless regions, but others are models of order.   Some humans and petari, and smaller numbers of Halflings and other races, also share the bakhars, although these are more likely immigrants than migrants from the free zones. Kyuzh-magh's halfling population descend from refugees in the time of the Great Flooding. They have a unique culture with no trappings of the travelling bands, and strong influences from goblin traditions. Like goblins, Kyuzhan halflings often take up technical or mercantile professions. They have a poor reputation among other halfhings because, never having travelled, they do not subscribed to Wain Law.
