Knights of Gond

Suto's monsters come from three places: The ocean to the south, the desert in the west, and the mountains in the centre. The local tradition of slayers was born as a self-governed order of questing knights, following a dream of a lost Utopia. Founded by a goliath named Bright Vision of the Lost Crown - Empty Quarter goliath adopt a series of names relating to their notable deeds, so while the name is preserved, the facts of their life are not - the Gond were sworn to restore the Empire and restore life to the desert.   After three or four generations, however, things looked dark for the order. There was no sign of the promised 'crown' of its founder's vision, with its magical restorative properties. Ever-increasing numbers of monsters were emerging from the desert, and necromancers and adepts from outside the desert came seeking the power of Gont. Faced with this decline, the Order's priorities changed. The 'crown' is still, ultimately, the goal, but the method is no longer to search and simply confront the obstacles presented. Instead, they are dedicated to purging the desert of all monsters and would-be tyrants.   The Knights' equivalent of the Hunter's Bane is called the Blood of Gond. The Blood is a powerful elixir, with similar physiological effects to the Bane and an even more potent hallucinogenic influence. Through a structured ritual, the order guides these 'visions' to strengthen the suppliant's motivation both to hunt and to seek the crown. Tradition holds that the Blood was first made to a recipe dating back to Gond, but it has undergone development since its 'discovery.'   Over time, the original order has divided into groups called chapters, some of them offshoots, others external groups adopted into the Knights. Each chapter includes knights - the hunters who have taken the Blood - squires - unblooded apprentices - and pages - non-hunters who assist with logistics and administration. Most pages are kin, or owe their lives to, a knight, and have no other family.   The Crimson Chapter is the most direct descendent of the original Knights of Gond. They consider it their specific duty to purge the desert, and hold that doing so will cause the crown to reveal itself. Veterans of the Crimson who do not die on the hunt make up the majority of the Claret Chapter, the council of elders who oversee the order, resolve disputes and maintain the Motherhouse in Harak.   There are two subordinate chapters which have split off from the Crimson to tackle specific issues: the Ebon Chapter specialise in handling the undead, a problem exacerbated by the fall of so many bloody-minded hunters in the Elan nok Vircas. The Ivory Chapter are the custodians of the Blood of Gond and the defenders of the Motherhouse.   The Cerulean Chapter was founded on the southern coast, and consists primarily of fisherfolk who have lost kin or companions to sea monsters. They hunt aboleths and their skumm, as well as sea spawn, deep scions, and terrestrial threats spawned by similar aberrations. They maintain and operate from a chapter house in Plundrage.   The Ashen Chapter was originally a group of anurin and bofyrn who committed to rooting out the corrupted elementals of the Fire Nests. They operate chapter houses in Anur-aket and Bofyr-ket, and are dedicated foes of the Pyranoi of the mountains.
