Galene is one of the
Runic Isles’ few cities that survived the Great Flood of 307 AKD. Built upon a tall hill, it was only natural that they missed the worst of it. Not only that, but Galene is home to some of Aeziron’s finest mages, which fiercely protected their city during the Eionian War. Galene is the home of
Rune Noveer as well, which the nation was named after.
The magical city of Galene is grand and beautiful. Filled with lush valleys, gardens, and homes, it is without a doubt some of the most gorgeous in the land. Galene is built on a hill, overseeing a mesmerizing coastal view. At the very top lies the Towers of Arcadia, a prestigious college dedicated to the pursuit of magic. Below the towers lies the homes and businesses of Galene, which are much more humble in appearance.
Galene is full of tragic history and perseverance, dating all the way back to the Age of Gods. Galene was once home to the Galeni, an ancient group of powerful Kalashtar mages. Hints of their life can still be found in the ruins and architecture of Galene, most notably the Towers of Arcadia, which was built by their hands.
Current Rulers
Mayor Helaine Ana has been running the city for almost two decades. She graduated from Arcadia many years before, and uses diplomacy and knowledge to keep peace within her hometown. Helaine encourages interest in the arcane, and has been a strong supporter of public education. Helaine seems to get along fine with the everyday residents of Helaine, although Arcadia does not pay her too much attention.
Notable Locations
Tower Grounds.
At the very top of Galene lies the Towers of Arcadia and the surrounding area. The Tower grounds is a spacious district with courtyards, gazebos, and dorms spread across the valley.
Towers of Arcadia.
The Towers of Arcadia are made up of three white marble towers, all with varying heights. The Towers are apart of a magical and prestigious academy dedicated to the pursuit of arcane, each with different purposes.
The
Furiae tower is the shortest of all the towers, yet still towering in height. This tower is dedicated to bards and other artisans that mix their craft with magic.
The
Eumenides tower is the middling tower, which focuses on the more studious and book-heavy side of magic. Many wizards, as well as sorcerers hoping to understand their own innate powers, come here to learn and study.
The
Dirae tower is the tallest, and arguably the most important. This tower is dedicated to divine magic. Here people dedicate themselves to the gods, studying to better understand them, their creatures, and their relations with mortals. Many of Aeziron’s oracles and champions originate from here, or come here later in life to seek answers.
Common Grounds
The Common Grounds district is located east of the Tower Grounds, down a slope and ending at Galene’s docks.
Keeper's Hut.
While the Towers of Arcadia host any foreign dignitaries and important figures, Keeper’s Hut is the place most ordinary travelers and tourists visit. It’s a quaint, two story pier on the docks of the Common Grounds. The owner, a graduate from the Furiae Tower, uses a mix of magic to make their signature foods and drinks.
Golden Quill.
The Golden Quill is Aeziron’s only magical shop. Creations of Arcadia’s students and the professors that they wish to sell often end up here, as well as an array of magical components. The dome building matches the aesthetic of the Tower Grounds, made of marble pillars with accents of gold.
History
The Galeni (5000~ BKD).
Before Trax or
Eione ruled over the isles, the islands were made up of all sorts of little clans and villages. Galene was specifucally home to a Kalashtar group called the Galeni. The Galeni were said to be some of the first mortals to have mastered magic, with the aid of the gods. They were even the creators of the Towers of Arcadia.
The Traxian Ambush (994 BKD).
When the Trax Empire began their reign of terror over Aeziron, the Galeni would soon be found. At first they put up a good fight, and had even driven the archons away. But their emperor at the time planned an ambush attack no one could’ve anticipated. In the dead of night, they ambushed on the backs of griffons, using antimagic fields to suppress the Galeni’s magic. Many of the Galeni died defending their home, and those that survived had either surrendered or ran off.
Meidias' Founding (780 BKD).
Before the city was named Galene, the Trax named it after the archon commander that took down the Galeni: Meidias. It was turned into a fishing town, and the Towers were ransacked before being abandoned.
Galene's Renaming (6 AKD).
After the Traxian Empire fell, and Eione was established, Eione took reign of Meidias and the neighboring isles.
Very little Galeni were left in Aeziron, and even fewer returned to Medias after everything that had transpired. Still,
Archmage Arabel Leventis wanted to honor the Galeni. She had the town's name changed to Galene, and would spend the next few years working on reopening the towers as a magical academy.
The Great Flood (307 AKD).
Galene had a major part to play in what would eventually cause the Great Flood. A year into the Eionian War, Eione had began drafting mages that had worked and graduated from the Towers. At some point they began to retaliate.
When the tower mages were caught helping
Arethusa, things took a turn for the worse. To deal with the rebelling mages, King Finlay ordered his army to send a massive, catastrophic wave down upon the isles. Rune Noveer, a student at the Eumenides Tower, found out about the king’s plans thtough divination. She acted in haste, and together her and the other mages spread across the isles, hoping to protect what they could with magical barriers. Many islands and homes were lost to the sea that day. But thanks to Rune’s warning, not all was lost. Three islands were saved, including the one which Galene was built on.
After Eione’s war had ended, the isles called for independence. With the sudden disappearance of Duke Arabel Leventis, the king couldn’t care more about the isles, and let them go. With that, the isles became their own nation called “The Runic Isles”. For many years Rune ruled as the isle’s leader, while remaining in Galene to continue her studies.
Rune's Disappearance (620 AKD).
In recent months, Rune Noveer has disappeared. There is no trace to hint as to what happened to her or where she could be. Missing posters of her are scattered across Aeziron, and rewards are being offered by the Runic Isles for any information about what happened.
