The Emporium Camporum is the city’s primary general store, positioned in the Scholars’ Quarter for the practical reason that the scholars, researchers, and Mission staff who constitute its most consistent customer base are concentrated there, and for the further practical reason that its proprietor, Lucia Merx Campana, fifty-three, grew up on a frontier farming community and has been supplying the city’s institutional population with provisions and equipment for twenty-two years. The Emporium stocks the standard range of Roman provincial store goods alongside a selection of plains-appropriate equipment — extended water capacity, navigation aids calibrated for landmark-poor terrain, the centaur-sourced grassland rope that is significantly stronger per unit weight than its Roman equivalent, the dried provisions developed for the Stonehoof Clan’s circuit journeys that Mission staff on extended plains visits use — that no other store in the province carries.
The Emporium is also, secondarily, the Scholars’ Quarter’s informal information exchange point, because Lucia knows everyone who does serious work in the city and has been supplying their expeditions and field trips long enough to understand what each person’s work actually involves. She does not repeat what she knows. She does help people who are heading in similar directions find each other before they duplicate effort, which she considers a service to the scholarly community and which the Mission’s senior staff consider a useful complementary function to the archive’s more formal introductions.
Design
A double-fronted shop on the Scholars’ Quarter’s main street: the standard Roman commercial format with the counter opening to the street for quick transactions and the interior space for the more extensive outfitting consultations that plains-crossing preparation requires. The back storeroom is organised with the specific precision of a buyer who knows exactly what she has and where it is, and whose stock turnover is high enough that she restocks quarterly through supply channels that include the Mission’s logistics network and two centaur liaison families in the Plains Quarter.
Denizens
Lucia Merx Campana , fifty-three, Emporium owner and operator, twenty-two years. Grew up on a frontier farming community fifteen kilometres from the eastern clan range boundary. Speaks functional Hava’keth — not fluent, but enough to conduct basic transactions and, more usefully, enough to understand whether what someone is saying to her is the polite version of a thing or the actual version of a thing. The centaur cultural liaisons who use the Emporium for plains equipment — including Essa-Reach for the eastern goods section’s logistics — consider her a reliable commercial partner in the specific sense that her stock is good and she understands what she is selling and to whom.
