Red Desert Geographic Location in Aeternia | World Anvil

Red Desert

The Red Desert has only been accessed three times:
  1. The first time was apparently induced by some strange substance in a hidden lab.
  2. The second time, it happened seemingly at random, in the middle of a conversation, shortly after defeating Baxton Mandrim.
  3. The third time, it was right after making plans with the people of Overlook, also shortly after defeating one of the Manifestations of the Mirage, this one being Vicra Lammergeyer.

Properties

There is no discernible sun or moon, yet it is always twilight.   There seems to be a theme of stars and starlight throughout the visions. The stars do not match any known constellations from Aeternia.   Time works oddly, almost like a dream. Many actions that would normally take a long time, like traveling, seem to complete in seconds. You feel as if the entire time has passed, but you remember doing none of it. Traveling long distances, in particular, does not exhaust you at all.   It is difficult to tell what is real and what is an illusion. Your gear apparently stays equipped, but provides no actual protection or offensive capabilities.   Magic sometimes works, sometimes doesn't.

Inhabitants

The native inhabitants of this area seem to be a group of disembodied voices that speak in unison, but do not always agree on which words to use.
Time and language are c̱̍o̝̿nfũ͓si̻̕ñ͍g̞̀a̤w͢k̜w͜a̹r͙d͕ǘn͂c͘o͝m̈́f͑ö́r͒t̊a̕b̏l̋è to us.
During their first encounter with the party, they uttered a few key words and phrases that stood out:
  • Jeopardy / Possibility / Calamity (referring to the path that the party is traversing)
  • Unsuspecting / Involuntary / Last-Resort (referring to the adventurers coming to the Red Desert "by chance")
  • Dismantling / Dangerous / Impending (referring to "a being of organized disorder, unstable stability" originating in Aeternia's plane)
  • Tether / Harpoon / Conjugation (referring to an existential problem that the voices have)
  • Warn / Support / Beseech (referring to what the voices are trying to do right now)
  • Deliverance / Cooperation / Salvation (referring to what the voices want from the party)
Additionally, the Manifestations of the Mirage were encountered here, but only after a meteor crashed down onto the sand in the distance.
