Eno (Ee-no)

This world is very much a work in progress, so please forgive any continuity mishaps
The Eno are the most prevalent sentient species in the world of Aereltia, alongside the Zaerlir and Lorn. Zaerlir are from the mysterious lands of the east, while Lorn are amphious reptiles and naturally bioluminescent. Eno are tall, slender creatures, very similar to the owls of Earth. They have compact wings on their backs, excellent for gliding in the dense jungles of the coasts; long legs ending in large bird feet, complete with huge talons; and human-handed arms, though also with fearsome, albeit smaller, talons.     Eno don't need to bathe, as they have the tiny insects that live in their fur that clean their fur.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Tall and narrow humanoid form. They possess a thick downy fur, overlaid by two layers of feathers for warmth and weatherproofing. This covers their entire body, except for the face, which is lightly feathered; having the large yellow eyes and concave shape of an owl, but the strong, hooked nose and mouth of a man.  Their face is almost comically round, with owlish 'dishes' around the eyes, and very large eyes. Their ears are small, pointing outward from atop their head and tufted like a horned owl. (just imagine a horned owl's 'horns' are it's ears) Strong clawed hands, very human in form, but with a light covering of small feathers on their backs. The claws are kept blunted and a shorter length to avoid getting in the way of everyday tasks. Eno who work with delicate material, such as [fantasy silk] and other fabrics, and career nannies often have their claws removed. Their feet also have very fearsome talons, seeming too large for their feet, and tend to be blunted from the excess of walking Eno do. Their legs and feet are also feathered in much the same manner as the rest of their body, however losing the down-fur and only having feather layers at their feet. They also have wings on their backs, shorter and broader than a regular flying specie, making them very compact and excellent for gliding. Eno cannot fly as such (their wings are much like a chicken's, useable only for short bursts of flight). Their wings fold closed snugly against their back.

Genetics and Reproduction

Reproduces like a mammal, carrying the baby till full term before birth. Gestation period is...? 5 months? The baby is like a normal mammilian baby, in that it can walk 2-3 weeks after birth and run after four. mammilian = lactates. in this case Eno are like humans, with breasts at the chest, but they are only noticible during pregnancy and lactation. After the baby is weaned, they gradually de-swell and are flush with the chest.

Growth Rate & Stages

Newly born Eno cannot fly, obviously, and are cared for [dedicatedly] by their mothers for the first two weeks. After one week they open their eyes, and after two they can begin to move on their own (but not yet walk). After the initial two weeks, mama birds traditionally have a couple of days rest, only feeding the babies and leaving the rest to their father.  At four weeks, the babies are much more independent, able to run around without help. Parents share responsibilities. At 6 months, tlali ('young one' in Lides, the main Eno language) are taught to fly. Similar to learning how to ride a bike or drive, this is a huge step of independence fo ryoung Eno. This is often looked back on as a fond father-child bonding experience, but tends to be much like being taught algebra by your dad. Young Eno tend to have mastered flight by the time they reach their first birthday.  Eno reach maturity at around three years of age, this being equivalent to twenty human years.

Ecology and Habitats

The Eno are technically native to the coastal jungles of Aereltia, but they are pretty versatile and adaptable to any environment. With the majority of Eno being farmers, the prevailing attitude toward the planet is one of balance. If you take something from the earth, give her something back. Take crops, give her fertilizer, etc.  Eno are also prolific inventors, highly inquisitive and constantly exploring technologically, the cities are constantly changing. Most Eno live in apola, the giant tree-skyscrapers of the cities.  In the plains and prairies, there's a wide variety of houses, ranging from the traditional roost build, a house raised off the ground several meters by one or more poles; or the more heat-efficient mound houses, half below-ground with round earthen roofs (very like icelandic turf houses).

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Slightly concave face, like an owl, to capture the most light and sound. Very large dark eyes, almost comically so. Long (not super long) and very sensitive ears beginning at the sides of the head and extended upward like a rabbit, except the ears are a bit wider.   Lightly furred, with flattened, sensitive noses.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Mostly in the western lands of Aereltia.

Average Intelligence

Pretty intelligent

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Very good eyesight, can be sensitive to sudden light. Very sharp hearing, to the point where there are noise limitations on many areas of cities.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Symbiotic with several species of mite and mouse, which they use to clean their fur. Normal everyday parasites i guess.

Naming Traditions

The firstborn child's name is a fusion of their parents' names, the mother's name first for daughters and the father's name first for sons. Subsequent children (if any) are given new names. Surnames are a combination of the father's name and the clan name.  E.g. Mom is Sond and Dad's name is Corlinn. Clan name is Dulgruuz. Firstborn daughter: Solinn Corgruuz Firstborn son: Corond Corgruuz

Average Physique
Tall and slender, not well muscled but can become bulky if trained hard. Their slender bodies are wrapped in a thick layer of downy fur, under two layers of outer feathers, making them look much larger than they are.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Thick fur varying in color from dark to light brown. Melanism, albinism, and stripes can occur but very rarely.
