Scientists discover that only a wish for someone else can be granted.

After running countless tests and observations on children, with little success, the scientists turn to adults. They choose from a wide background, and throughout the trial they notice only those who wish for others to be benefited have their wishes granted.  While a degree of genuineness in necessary, so long as the wish is not selfish/benefits the wisher, the wish will be granted.
