Kavios

“…Their will to endure is second only to the people of Gol-Duulga, even if the cataclysm that caused most of their great city to fall through the ground. They seem to mask their grief with drugs and arcsthetics. It is a well-fitting mask if I do say myself. Although, I cannot shake the feeling of something more sinister behind the layers of that mask…”
— A Foreign Diplomat

Demographics

The city is made up of two major groups of people. The karls, or free people, are the standard citizens that live within the city. The majority of karls In Kavios are either duergar, leonin, or goliath while the minority is a mix of all other races. Unlike other cities in Vomethnda, the title of thrall is used when referring to the prisoners of Helvetti instead of the non-citizen population.

Government

The Thing of Kavios is a governmental body made up of every able-bodied karl in the city. They convene in, and around, the Old Merchant’s Guild in the Sokkeyja district. The Thing convenes at least once a year to discuss legal disputes and dull out punishments to the guilty. Unlike in other cities, the Thing of Kavios has no legislative power to create, abolish, or change laws. This power is exclusive to the jarl and their counsel. The greatest power the Thing does have however is the ability to elect a new jarl, or re-elect them, each time they convene for any reason.

The jarl of Kavios must wear many hats during their rule. Firstly, is to ensure the safety of the city by creating laws and regulations that protect its citizens and the city itself. This has been the priority of the jarl ever since reckless mining by Heimskul Industries caused the collapse of the land beneath city. The second duty the jarl must fulfill is that they must oversee the Helvetti prison as warden. This often requires that the jarl spend days or weeks at the prison to deal with rioting or other security concerns. Lastly, they must oversee the Leyndar Mining Corporation to ensure that another cataclysm never happens again.

Defences

Due to the importance of Kavios to Vomethnda and its vulnerability to attack, the defenses of the city are second to none in the country. The Vomethndan military has several garrisons within and directly surrounding the city. The garrisons within the city are at strategic points where the Official Division believes attacks would be most likely. Places like the anchors and frestun generators, the cable crawler stations, and the district of Sokkeyja. Some of the garrisons have artillery emplacements which can fire bolts of magical energy up to ten miles outside the city. The entrances to the anchors are also laced with deadly traps of mystek design. These traps seek to destroy any non-military member who attempts to enter the area without permission, karl or thrall alike.

Kavios is thought by many to be impenetrable due to the restricted access to its center. With the cables of The Gap being the only method for a ground-based invasion to enter Sokkeyja. Air invasions would also be tricky due to the abundant artillery placed within the city. Even with this in consideration the Vomethndan military has a failsafe enacted to prevent any sensitive information from getting into advisories hands. Special explosive devices placed on the anchors of Sokkeyja are rigged to explode, causing the city to plumet into The Hollow if the city is ever on the verge of a hostile takeover. The secrets of Kavios are worth spilling the blood of thousands of innocents it seems.

Industry & Trade

The industry of Kavios is centered around the trade of raw materials it mines from The Hollow. Materials such as gold, silver, raakatite, and most importantly fantasma crystal are the most important materials that companies such as the Leyndar Mining Corporation bring up from the subterranean realm. Most materials are shipped out by rasktog to be refined elsewhere, except for fantasma crystals. They are refined by the Leyndar Corporation, who is the only company able to do so according to the laws of Kavios. The exact method of refining is not known, but the quality of the refined crystal varies greatly. The quality of fantasma crystals can be seen in the hue of light they give off. If the crystal is a faint blue, it is of high quality. Alternatively, if the hue is closer to a deep purple, it is of gravely poor quality. A group of gemologists working for the Leyndar Corporation assess and rate every fantasma crystal mined by the company.

The fantasma crystals trade also powers an underground trade of a drug made from the crystals themselves. draugur dust is a potent drug that infuses the memories of another person into your thoughts, causing you to feel how they felt in a moment. This can range from feeling as happy as a child on their birthday for the evening, to causing an episode of PTSD from a war that you were never they’re for. The drug has seen a rise in its popularity with those who suffer the effects of overloading their body with arcsthetics. More often than not, the crafted body of a warforged subdues the senses, with many having their sense of touch, taste, or more being nonexistent. This drug allows them to feel those sensations again through the memories of another. Draugur dust is most popular in Kavios but can be found in most cities of Vomethnda and even parts of Ezlekh.

A significant percentage of the population of Kavios is warforged due to the immense popularity of arcsthetics. Arcsthetics are enchanted prosthetics that replace the limbs or other organs. They can vary from mechanical implants to enchanted wooden models meant to replicate the original thing. The popularity of arcsthetics drives the market in the city. Their popularity has drawn in teknomancers from around the world to practice their craft in a city where it is all but praised. Many of these teknomancers came together to form Skola Arcsthesis, a college that primarily teaches aspiring teknomancers but is also heavily involved in arcsthetic development. The teknomancers of Skola Arcsthesis have gone on to create many of the most advanced arcsthetics such as arcane shielding, unveil, and vampire fangs.

The Helvetti Prison also provides Kavios with a decent part of its income by housing prisoners from around the country. The prison itself was built from the rubble of Kavios that fell into The Hollow and is the highest security prison in the country. Even if a prisoner were to escape, they would have to survive in The Hollow and find a way back to the surface. This measure of security almost ensures that prisoners placed in Helvetti will never consider escaping, making it popular to place the country’s most fearsome criminals. The prisoners are often used as cheap labor by companies, like the Leyndar Mining Corporation who use the prisoners supplement their regular employees are falling short of a quota.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure of Kavios has been a major focus for its people ever since a sinkhole swallowed most of the city. Four anchors prevent the remining district of the old city from plummeting into The Hollow. Raakatite cables that can reach thicknesses of fifteen feet attach anchors on the mainland to similar anchors embedded under the remainder of the old city, the Sokkeyja district. The anchors on the mainland can reach up to one mile in depth, while the anchors embedded into the Sokkeyja district are interconnected which helps hold together the little remaining land underneath it. The cables themselves have developed into a district of their own with the assistance of cable crawlers, an insect like tram system that carries people to and from the mainland anchors to the old city. The trolley system of the old city is still in use in the Sokkeyja district but is now used primarily to move goods transportation between the mainland and itself.

The Gap uses an experimental technology developed at the Kappi Research Institute in Utdanning that can suspend entire buildings in the air. This technology, known as frestun generators, takes advantage of a special interaction between fantasma crystals and raakatite that creates a powerful field like a magnetic field. This interaction suspends objects made from raakatite while they are within the field, making them nearly impossible to move in any direction. There are four frestun generators in Kavios, found at each of the mainland anchors, which generate a field along the massive cables holding the city afloat. The same technology is also used to power the freight elevator known as The Dyploft that connects Sokkeyja to The Hollow. The Dyploft is used primarily to transport miners working for the Leyndar Mining Corporation, prisoners being transferred to Helvetti Prison, and members of Kula’s Surveyors.

The buildings of Kavios use a mixture of older technologies such runic arts and newer technologies like mystek. Running water, heating, cooling, and lighting both interior and exterior are provided using arcane devices of both mystek make and runic enchantments. Roads paved with stone bricks connect the buildings of Sokkeyja and the encampments of Anchorville. Vehicle traffic is prohibited in the city in any district other than Anchorville due to the impractical nature transporting them over The Gap. A small rail station is built to the north end of Anchorville which serves to transport goods to Utdanning and beyond.

Districts

Sokkeyja: Suspended above a great chasam whose depth reaches down to The Hollow, the Sokkeyja district is the last remaining section of the old city. The district used to be the merchant’s quarter, but now it acts as the governmental center of the city. The jarl and their counsel use the Old Merchant’s Guild as the operational center of the city. From there they manage the laws of the city, the Helvetti Prison, and regulate the mining operations in The Hollow. The Leyndar Mining Corporation is also headquartered in Sokkeja. They are the largest producer of fantasma crystals in the country which powers the mystek that is so prevalent in the nation. A guild of cartographers is also found within the district, whose goal is to map out The Hollow in its entirety. Kula’s Surveyors are a group of cartographers, explorers, and surveyors who are experts in traversing The Hollow. They are responsible for nearly all the current knowledge we have about The Hollow and its geography.

The Gap: Suspended over the great chasm, The Gap is a district of geniuses or fools depending on how you look at it. The district consists of the hundreds of buildings suspended under the cables that keep the Sokkeyja district from falling into The Hollow. Each of these buildings are suspended by use of frestun generators, which takes advantage of a property of raakatite when exposed to fantasma crystals that prevents the structures placed here from falling. Recently the district has become a hotspot for arcsthetics leading for technomancers to be in high demand. Capitalizing on this, the Skola Arcsthesis provides training, mentorship, and funding for aspiring teknomancers in the city and around the world. They also are the leading developer of arcsthetic implants with some of their notable inventions being arcane shielding, unveil, and vampire fangs. The southern branch of The Gap is home to the infamous club, The Dodiikami. The club is an exclusive joint that only allows those who push their bodies to the limit with their arcsthetics to enter. The Bryter Family, a mafia-like gang, runs the club and is rumored to be tied to the new found popularity of a drug called draugur dust.

Anchorville:The district of Anchorville is the group of four anchors on the mainland that hold up the rest of the city and the structures that surround them. The buildings that make up the district are mostly remnants of the old city, with new structures like the anchors mixed in. When walking through the district it is very easy to spot buildings built before and after the city fell into The Hollow. The anchors are all heavily defended, with each one having a small fort surrounding it. This level of defense is seen as necessary due to the number of lives that depend on the anchors. Not only is the Sokkeyja district held up by the cables attached to the anchors, but each anchor has a frestun generator that keeps the buildings in The Gap suspended in the air. Other than the infrastructure that keeps the other districts afloat, Anchorville is home to the Gryti rail station, a small station that takes in produce from its surrounding villages and cities such as Jordmässig as well as a means of export for the raw materials mined by the city. The rasktogs that travel through the station also take passengers, but with the ticket prices it is usually restricted to the wealthy.

Guilds and Factions

The Jarl of Kavios: The head of the state, the warden of Helvetti, and the protector of the citizens, the jarls of Kavios have much more responsibility to their city compared to others in the country. They hold absolute power over the laws and regulations of the city, where that would normally be the responsibility of the Thing in other cities. The laws that the jarls have created promote the mining of resources from The Hollow and give power to the Vomethndan military in order to protect the vulnerable city. They are also responsible for managing Helvetti Prison, the high security detainment facility built in the depths of The Hollow. Their role as warden allows them to dictate the rules, rights, and freedoms that each prisoner has during their internment at the prison.

Kula’s Surveyors: A group of cartographers, explorers, and surveyors that attempt to map the dangerous ream of The Hollow. They are one of the few groups allowed to use The Dyploft, a massive lift that connects Kavios and The Hollow. They are famous for the charts and journals that they create. Detailed descriptions of monsters and landscapes found in the abyss below. They also sell the artifacts found in the realm, with the price of the relic often corresponding with how far an explorer traveled to acquire it. The guild itself is named after the first person to discover an entrance to The Hollow, Kula Helli. They discovered an entrance accidentally while in an abandoned fantasma crystal mine in the northern area of Vomethnda. They soon started an adventuring party to chart The Hollow. Years after this discovery Kula’s Surveyors still push the boundaries of the known world beneath their own.

Leyndar Mining Corporation: The premier fantasma crystal mining company in the continent of Malnova, the Leyndar Mining Corporation is a powerhouse in raw materials located Kavios. The corporation was born from the ashes of Heimskul Industries, the very same corporation whose reckless mining caused the earth to swallow much of Kavios. As for the Leyndar Corporation their focus is now on mining from The Hollow. Materials like attilum, fantasma crystals, and raakatite are plentiful down there in comparison to surface worlds. In fact, the fanatasma crystals mined here power the majority of mystek on the continent. Once the fantasma crystals are mined, the Leyndar Corporation puts them through an intense refinement process. Undergoing this process allows the company to determine the quality of the crystal. The best crystals emit a faint light blue light, while the worst give off a deep purple light. Most crystals with a purple hue are sold off at a bargain to anyone willing to buy them. These fantasma crystals of poor quality are often made into a drug known as draugur dust. The Leyndar Corporation takes no responsibility for this, however.

Skola Arcsthesis: An academy of teknomancy that strives to promote the use of arcsthetics around the world. Skola Arcsthesis was founded as a place of learning, to teach aspiring teknomacers the tricks of the trade and train them to meld flesh with magic. Over the years they have also become an institution of research, attempting to push the boundaries of arcsthetics and the body. They have created some of the most advanced arcsthetics currently on the market such as arcane shielding, unveil, and vampire fangs, and many more.

Bryter Family: Blood, drugs, and money, these are the driving forces of the Bryter Family. They are a drug cartel deeply rooted in the city of Kavios. The run the infamous club, The Dodiikami, which is a hotspot for draugur dust and arcsthetic madness. The club only allows those with heavy arscthetic modification within its doors, likely due to the correlation between the abuse of draugur dust and arcsthetic modification. Despite the open nature of their business, the Bryter Family does not incur the wrath of the jarl of Kavios. In fact, it seems that the government and local government support the cartel, since their supplier with draugur dust is thought to be none other than the Leyndar Mining Corporation. The actual members of the family are obscured to public knowledge, but there are rumors that much of the family hold positions of power all over the city.

Clan Raseri: Arcsthetic junkies that thrive off draugur dust. They are the hired muscle of the Bryter Family and can usually be found at infamous club the Dodiikami. Their erratic nature makes them as dangerous to themselves as they are to their targets. Members of the clan often sport heavy arcsthetic modifications, making them very prone to bouts of arcsthetic madness. Before they were on the Bryter Family payroll, Clan Raseri terrorized Kavios. They would assault the frestun generators that hold up the city, and shipments of fantasma crystals. Their constant is the leading cause of the militarization of Anchorville.

Points of interest

Old Merchant’s Guild: The oldest standing building in Kavios, the Old Merchant’s Guild was originally built to help merchants from around the country to meet, make connections, and receive market information and advice. Now the building is used to house the jarl and their counsel acting as both the governmental headquarters of the city and the residents of all its members. The structure itself has also seen heavy renovations since taking on its new role. Its stone arches and pillars have been reinforced with raakatite buttresses, its crumbling brick walls have been replaced with metal, and a tower has been added to the structure which provides the residential space for the jarl and their counsel. The interior of the building is typically off limits to the karls of the city except during the Thing. Most deliberations take place in the commons, an open room in the center of the building that can hold up to five hundred people. The commons are adorned with the crest of the current jarl and tapestries depicting the city’s history. Due to the buildings age, it was built without consideration for arcane lighting, but many were added to the structure during renovations. These light fixtures stick out within the building due to their strikingly different style compared to the traditional chandeliers and lamps still found within the building.

Helvetti Prison: A hostile place meant to break down all those imprisoned here, Helvetti Prison is marvel of construction in Kavios. The prison is built entirely from concrete made from the salvaged stones of the buildings that fell into The Hollow, as well as metals such as attilum and raakatite mined in the depths. Its exterior walls are thirty feet high, and twenty feet thick made from solid concrete. The walls not only keep the prisoners within the compound but also keep the dangers of The Hollow from getting in. Sentry towers built entirely from raakatite are stationed at regular intervals along the wall. They are equipped with spotlights and light artillery cannons to spot and eliminate any escaping prisoner or troublesome monster. Within the walls are a structure built entirely by the prison population. Mud brick huts, underground hovels, and even some wooden shacks populate the desolate land inside the prison. This is done because the guards and prisoners hardly interact with each other for any reason other than supply drops and prisoner transfers. This has caused a miniature society to crop up within the prison. The society acts to keep each prisoner safe from any intruders that come from outside the walls and to ration out the supplies given to them by the guards and warden.

Anchor Point North: The northern most anchor within Anchorville. This anchor point is the primary control center for every frestun generator in the city. Commands for power output are calculated by a team of expert mathematicians and mystek engineers to ensure that no structure in the gap nor cable crawler will lose power and fall into The Hollow below. Due to its importance, Anchor Point North is the most defended structure in the city. Constant patrols consisting of both Vomethndan military and autonomous drones from Utdanning. Sentries and artillery have been built into the surrounding fort of the anchor for additional defense. Within the fort structure additional guards stand watch at all entrances which prevent all unauthorized people from entering the compound.

The Dodiikami: An exclusive club that only allows those who are heavily augmented with arcsthetics within. The Dodiikami is known for their extravagant entertainment and the copious amount of draugur dust that flows within. The club itself is a building whose exterior is made mostly of raakatite with large openings nearly a story tall for glass windows. The interior is decorated with tiles of precious stones, elaborate wooden panel walls, and mystek lighting that can change colors to fit the mood of the club. The lighting system they have built within the club also capable of elaborate lightshows that some say rival the festival of lights in Heilagur. The draugur dust has also attracted the liked of Clan Raseri, a group of erratic dust addled miscreants that now act as muscle for the club and its owners, the Bryter Family.

The Dyploft: The lifeline of the city, the Dyploft gives direct access to The Hollow for the businesses and government of Kavios. The elevator itself is constructed in a similar way to the cables that hold up The Gap and Sokkeyja. A frestun generator pulses energy through a cable that runs from the city center and surface of The Hollow. Adjusting the angle of the frestun output frequency allows the platform of The Dyploft to traverse the cable. This process is extremely slow due to the instability caused by the generator if its output is changed rapidly. The platform itself is approximately the size of a city block and can transport up to 6000 tons of people and cargo. Not just anyone can use The Dyploft however, only members of specific businesses or karls with specified permission may use the lift. Businesses and guilds such as Kula’s Surveyors and the Leyndar Mining Corporation have access to the lift but others such as the Vomethndan military and Clan Raseri are not allowd to use the lift.

Temple of Bardagi: A newly constructed temple built in Anchorville dedicated to the god of war, Bardagi. The temple features metallic architecture attempting to replicate older styles of architecture with a modern twist. The exterior walls are made from raakatite and are angled into the center of the structure. The temple itself is three stories tall, with a tiered roofing between each of the floors. The roofs themselves are made of aluminum, contrasting against the darker raakatite. Ornaments of gold depicting Bardagi top the roof’s corners and peaks. The interior of the structure uses a combination of mystek and runic arts to provide several furnaces and forges that always remain ready for use. Forged items and furniture decorate the worship hall, with a bronze cast of Bardagi acting as the centerpiece of the hall.

Architecture

The architecture of Kavios is torn between two ages, before and after the city was swallowed by the ground beneath it. No other district best reflects this other than Sokkeyja. Being the only district remaining from the old city, Sokkeyja is a mix of the old style with the new. Stonework is reinforced, repaired, and retrofitted with metal structures. This can be as simple as extra pipes to help move wastewater, to major structural supports around the structure. These reinforcements are typically made from raakatite but can also be made from aluminum and steel. The parts of the buildings that survived the event are typically made with worked stone blocks and lumber sourced from forests to the north. Most buildings still use multi layered roofing and eyebrow windows to allow light in on the upper floors.

The architecture in The Gap can only exist due to the special interaction between raakatite and fantasma crystals. The frestun generators in Anchorville energize the raakatite cables that hold up Sokkeyja, power the cable crawlers that transport people and cargo to each district, and most importantly suspend the buildings of The Gap in place. This is only possible if the structures exterior is mostly made from raakatite, or a raakatite based alloy. Due to this effect structures of The Gap appear to hang or dangle from invisible strings under the cables. They are typically constructed using a raakatite frame that often appear like large bird cages. Gaps in the frame are often covered or filled with bricks, concrete, or wood. Many of the structures feature story-tall windows to allow as much light in as possible.

Traveling from building to building can be done on foot like any other city thanks to suspended raakatite bridges. These bridges are also capable of moving locations to better regulate the flow of foot traffic. These bridges also allow people to embark and disembark on cable crawlers, which can take them to Sokkeyja or Anchorville.

The district of Anchorville resembles a military fort more than a city district. Large defensive structures made of concrete and raakatite are frequent sights to visitors of this district. They appear like obelisks compared to some of the other buildings in the district, being several stories tall and feature a pyramid style roof. The Vomethndan military is responsible for most of these structures, and they are typically used as a base for patrol groups. Some older structures from the old city remain to this day in Anchorville. The exteriors of these buildings are often made from worked stone, bricks, and lumber. The foundations of these structures are set on cobble stones which hold the buildings slightly above ground. Many of the buildings feature multi layered roofs and eyebrow windows that allow light into the upper levels of the structure.

Geography

The city of Kavios is located in badlands to the north of the Feramonto Mountains and west of the Matena River. The city itself exists in and around a large sinkhole caused by a mining accident, which leads from the surface to The Hollow.

Climate

The region surrounding the city sees little precipitation during the year, with only five percent of days in a year receiving any precipitation at all. The temperatures of the region can reach as low as -10 degrees Fahrenheit and as great as 120 degrees.

Natural Resources

Prospectors wanting to strike rich in this region may find themselves in luck, since the deposits of rare materials such as raakatite, gold, and silver are plentiful around the city. Although, those wanting to hunt animals or gather plants may be disappointed with the lack of variety found here.
