The motivation behind building Adazuri
Let's create something fun together!
My hope is that in Adazuri, heroic adventurers feel like they're stepping into the panels of their favorite shonen manga. There are many so-called "DnD Horror Stories" where DMs complain about people trying to play their favorite anime character. The purpose is
not for players to recreate their favorite story or character. Rather, it is to develop a new story brimming with the heroic adventurers' potential to achieve their greatest dream.
My motivation for every story I create includes these components:
- Make it Matter: It can be entertaining to do a dungeon crawler, racking up the kills and the gold. But I am far more interested in the way Heroic Adventurers interact with each other, with NPCs, and with the world. Leveling up isn't solely about how many enemies you vanquish. It's what you discover about yourself and the world along the way.
- Make it Diverse: Diversity of thought, folk, culture, places. The world is not a monolith and neither should the worlds we create. What makes the folk you meet unique? How does the history and legends of the world affect this moment? How can we continually celebrate our own traditions and the traditions of others?
- Make it Interesting: How can I make a world that is fantastical? Even the smallest of villages should invoke a sense of wonder. And what about the onions: I want layers! Perhaps that so-called "evil" race you run across is a lot more nuanced. Maybe the fantastic new magitech invention has a sinister understory.
Beyond the Big Three Motivations, I wanted two of my loves to produce a bright child named Adazuri. I wanted to create a game setting that I would look forward to GMing. It would be a dream if this setting grew so vast that one day I was able to be a player character. And perhaps, if some people express interest, you could play as one of these Heroic Adventurers.
Adazuri's Unique Selling point
Adazuri is far removed from Earth's timeline. Therefore, the technological advances Adazuri experiences cannot be mirrored to Earth's. Currently, Adazuri is in the midst of a magical technology revolution. This allows for unique exploration opportunities through new travel and communication advancements.
Adventuring Guilds and even Adventuring Academies are not only commonplace in Adazuri, they are used as a means to increase collaboration between Folk cultures. Many were created after the Devils' Storm, a war where the Devils sought to control all mortal Folk. Formerly divided Folk cultures joined together to defeat the Devils. And the Adventuring Guilds were the offshoots to continue the cultural and magical technology revolution. Some believe Adventuring Academies to be propaganda or even military training for the youths of Adazuri. As a player character, you can decide whether Adventuring Guilds have a positive or negative impact on the world.
For those that do not want to play the traditional adventurer, there are opportunities to create a game based in catching, training, and battling
Crittermorphs. Or create an entirely school-based game where you can train with classmates, join the Drift Disc Dash sports team, participate in school dances, and go on school-sponsored adventures.
Adazuri allows for much-loved shonen and shojo tropes to flourish in the structure of Fifth edition. Tireless Effort can bring you closer to your Dream and the Friendship of your Adventuring Party is you Greatest Strength.
Theme
Genre
Anime-style, magitech fantasy world. Communication and travel find help through magic. Non-magical weapons are rarely effective. Most people know some form of magic, though the way this manifests varies.
Reader Experience
It is a world brimming with potential. It is bright and exploration-positive. Even during more serious campaigns, the collective power of player characters should inspire hope for the future. Of course, whether that hope sides with the mortals, the devils, or some other entity is entirely up to the players.
Reader Tone
Fairly bright with the potential to go darker as player characters explore. However, the setting is created to always start Bright with characters either attending or recently graduating for school and preparing to explore the world on their own for the first time.
Recurring Themes
Players should feel like they stepped into a shonen anime. This means that the power of friendship is the most important magic in your arsenal. Through sheer willpower, you can achieve your dream (it is usually to be best). No matter what temptations come your way, you must always stay true to your destiny -- and make sure your friends do as well, even if they accidentally veer into the "dark side" for a short period. And, of course, the world is an incredible place to explore -- and an even better place to kick some butt.
Character Agency
Player Characters can fundamentally change the path of the world. In an shonen anime, it's not enough to be the best in your class . . . you must be the best in the world.
Focus
Interaction between various Folk Cultures
Advent of Magical Technology Advancements and the various stratifications of wealth that accompanies it.
The Aftermath of a War that spanned a continent: Those who were around to remember it 300 years ago. And those who fear that the peace is the Eye of the Devils' Storm.
