WorldEmber 2024 Recap
Hello everyone! It's maybe a little too late for a WorldEmber recap (heck, it's been almost an entire month since the challenge ended), but nevertheless I feel I should show my work somewhere. Somewhere like a dedicated article. Preferably in an ordered list. Maybe with some extra notes to explain what's what. That's just how my brain works. :p
My final word count for the month of December was... (drumrolls please...) ...11849 out of 10000!
Woo-hoo, good job me!
Seeing my world grow with each and every article... it really makes me feel happy.
Fulfilled.
Complete.
Now that all's done, I think I did a pretty decent job overall.
But, of course, that's something you'll have to decide for yourself.
(Don't be afraid to share your thoughts with me afterwards!)
My area of focus for WE 2024 was the cosmology of Aclara. Frankly, any part of this world would've been an equally good choice, since it's a pretty new project. A baby of a world, if you'd like. I decided to focus on the primordial beings of my world because 1) I already had a vague idea about what I wanted to do, and 2) I thought it would help me write my plots and figure out the overall storyline of Alcara. (And it really did; again, good job me!)
Writing about how these godly beings exist and interact with the world was pretty fun. My overall goal was to create a pantheon of beings that are somewhere between "work colleagues" and "family members", and I hope I succeeded in that regard. The (dys)functional relationships between the gods of a pantheon are, in my opinion, pretty interesting subjects to explore, and I do plan to write some more about their conflicts, their views, various moments between them etc. I can't wait to start working on it this year. ^^
Now, without further ado, let's see what I've cooked this winter:
The Creatures of the Dark
Before there was time, before there was anything, there was nothing. And before there was nothing, there were monsters.
Born out of the never-ending darkness between realities, the Veilborn are a race of beings as old as Aclara itself. Their one and only goal is to weaken the Boundaries that separate the planes from the Veil, a mysterious substance that fills the otherwise empty interplanar space. They work from the shadows, manipulating people and orchestrating conflicts - think Illuminati lizard people, but replace the "ruling the world" part with "burning the world".
The Land of the Gods
The Divine Aspects of Aclara live in a plane separate from all the mortals - a place of pure mana perfectly attuned to their divine souls from where they oversee the lives of mortalkind. I'll admit - this is probably one of my weakest overall articles. To be fair, I didn't really thought of anything to add to it; I just wanted to make the actual character articles look better. I will circle back to it at a later date, but I won't prioritize it; I'd rather write about what these gods actually do. And I think that's fair enough.
The Divine Aspects
Finally, the moment you've been all waiting for (hopefully): the Divine Aspects of Aclara! Born out of the creation Maelstrom, they each govern a specific part of how people and the world interact with each other. Here's an example: when a person influences the world around them, you could think about it in terms of "the Self" shaping "the World" with their own power; in a way, "the Self" manages to "conquer" "the World" they inhabit, bending it to their will. This would be represented by an Aspect, specifically the Aspect of Conquest; this Aspect can be considered an overseer of anything related to stuff people do to shape the environment to their benefit. It includes attacking, defending, war, craftsmanship and many more. Each of these Aspects can have one or more representations in a religion; in our previous case, if we're talking about the Greek pantheon for example, both Ares and Hephaestus can be considered representations of the Aspect of Conquest.
