The Rouge River is a major water system in Le
Royaume du Terdiore. It supplies the city of
Havere with the majority of its drinking and irrigation water.
The source of the Rouge River begins in several natural springs in the Rust Hills in the Western
Serpent Sands. From there, the river flows westward cutting an undulating green belt through the desert and coastal farmlands, eventually emptying alongside
Havere's famed Crystal Port.
La Marée Rouge
The name Rouge is derived from the Havecois word for red. This often confuses travelers to Havere since the river runs usually clear near the Rust Hills to a greenish brown at its mouth. However, during two weeks every summer in the month of Imixi, the river turns a deep scarlet color due to a bloom algae. The origins of the color starts at the Crystal Port and slowly makes its way upstream until the entire river seems to have been dyed. This annual event known as the
Marée Rouge or
Marée Imixi (The Red Tide or Imixi Tide).
During this time, many dye manufacturers gather the algae and processes it to make
Rouge Havercois - a fantastically bold red color used in everything from textiles and make-ups to special summer dishes and paints. It is perennially fashionable to wear rouge clothing in the summer months.
