Bazazan
One of the oldest communities in Balgrendia, fortified Bazazan commands a high hill just south of the Pellitc Mountains. Bazazan began as a small encampment of Bhal settlers and gradually grew into the burgeoning community of one hundred thousand souls that it is today. Aside from being the only sizeable inland community, Bazazan has served as the seat of power for Balgrendia’s regents since the time of King Harold IV, who made it his capital. It is known as the City of Accord for it was here that the two nations officially became one.
The city completely covers the hill on which it stands, buildings piled almost atop one another as they ascend to the great castle of gray stone that rises from the hilltop. Six concentric walls encircle the hill at different elevations and, much like rings in a tree, they mark major periods of the city’s growth. Between the walls is a densely crowded maze of buildings and the narrow streets and alleys that wend between them.
Proximity to the mountains makes metallurgy Bazazan’s chief industry. Pig iron smelted from iron ore extracted from the mines finds its way here to be refined into iron suitable for weapons and armor, which the city exports across Balgrendia and beyond. Smoke from the forges mingles with the thick fog that regularly spills down from the mountains, blanketing the city with a thick, ever-present gloom both day and night. Barrels of pitch and torches stand at every corner, offering light sources to people moving through the city, but the smoke from these greatly adds to the already noxious atmosphere.
Many of Bazazan’s people suffer from a sickness in their lungs and throat brought on by the thick, unwholesome atmosphere. The sickness shows itself in a persistent dry cough and wheezing that never seems to improve. People have lived this way so long that they hardly notice the symptoms until they eventually sicken and die.
