King Frederick

His Majesty Frederick

Crowned in 837, King Frederick might be remembered as a kind and benevolent ruler by historians, but most Balgrendians will remember him as someone who foisted too many onerous laws and changes upon them. Peace and prosperity be damned, many of the kingdom’s citizens are unhappy with his modernization reforms. Whatever prosperity came from the king’s goodwill and level-headed thinking will likely disappear within a year of his passing, as there appears to be little to hold Balgrendia together once he’s gone
King Frederick would be happy if his legacy was remembered as a time when invaders were kept at bay and the nation kept whole, renowned through history as a great king who solidified the fractured and growing tensions of the people through diplomacy and fairness. Now an old man, gray and withered, his mind wanders a bit, and he sometimes has a hard time holding on to the threads of conversation around him. In addition to his wish for history to be kind to him is his hope that his kingdom will thrive long after he is gone—unfortunately, his twin sons threaten to undo all the good he has achieved in his fifty-year reign.
As their father’s health declines, the king’s twin sons Nicolaus and Uri, have each started making moves and engaging in court intrigues to secure their future succession to Balgrendia’s throne. It is clear that neither has any interest in sharing the throne with the other, and there are fears that a division of the country might once again occur, or, worse, a bloody civil war. Whatever Frederick had intended for his legacy now seems moot as bloodshed looms on the horizon upon his passing.
