Undercity Dwellers Ethnicity in World Behind the Veil | World Anvil

Undercity Dwellers

Ohdows Ethnic Group

The most populous Ohdows ethnic group in North America live in the underworld of New York City. The undercity dwellers are organized in various communities with different social structures. Some are nomadic while others have established many settlements.   The undercity dwellers are a warlike people who defend their territories often with violence. Armed with modern weapons, they have become a force to be reckoned with. Occasionally there is some fighting between the various communities, but their primary focus is the dangerous creatures lurking in the dark. Although many areas have been pacified and secured, there are still many sections of the undercity that are home to danger.

Shared Values

The hostile undercity is no place for the weak and unskilled. To all undercity dwellers it is important to learn skills related to fighting and killing the enemies of their communities. These dangers are usually bigger and stronger, so these skills focus on using superior technologies, guerrilla tactics and subterfuge. Although there are scholars and engineers amonst their ranks their social status is not as high as the status of successful warriors.

Religions & Spiritualism

The undercity dwellers are very spiritual and most are a member of an organized religion. The three most common religious affiliations are Drakonsim, Christianity, and Buddhism. Dragon worship is commonplace because the dragon loyalists brokered peace in the extermination war conducted by the Hunter's Guild against the underworld inhabitants.   Several communities adopted Christianity in the late 19th century after a missionary successfully converted an important leader of the undercity dwellers. Buddhism is fairly new and was introduced by a dweller who had found their way into a Buddhist temple. Many families and individuals have followed this dwellers example and converted to Buddhism.   As spirits themselves, many ancient traditions, rituals and beliefs are still commonplace. They often adopt these into the new religions in creative ways to ensure that the old ways are not lost.
