Transfer Day

Every six months The Astronomers rotate some of the people stationed at The Burrows. On this day everyone who lives in the research base gathers together to welcome the new arrivals and send off those who are leaving. It is a day of small rituals, good food and drink, and a day off work for everyone, even those out in the field come back to the base to take part.   Due to the proximity of The Burrows to Souden Vale the Astronomers only station their people at The Burrows for six months. Not only is this a precaution against the effects of the Constellation, but they also found that prolonged periods of living underground affected some people's mental health in a negative manner. They chose to rotate them in groups of ten to minimise disruption to the research.   The same transport that brings the people coming onto rotation to the base will also take those who are leaving, home. It usually arrives some time in the early afternoon and departs the following morning, though not too early, as everyone has usually been up late. On the day of the transfer everyone takes the day off from their usual duties, but this does not mean there is not still some work to be done, though most people enjoy it.   Everyone stationed at the base gathers to welcome the new arrivals with hot and cold drinks, snacks and a friendly cheer. Once everyone has had a chance to get aquainted, or re-aquainted, the people who have never been to the base before are given the grand tour. Then the new folk are shown to their lodgings, where they are given a chance to stash their gear and freshen up from the journey. The other people of the base use this time to finish setting up
