Teal Cap

Not to be confused with the False Teal Cap.

Also known as the glowing helmet.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Pileus (cap): Measures 5 - 7 metres tall and 8 - 11 metres across. Pulvinate, with a scrobiculate surface. The cap margin is usually split, although a very young specimen may have an even margin. Teal in colour, ranging from turquoise to aquamarine, with pitted areas being darker and raised areas being lighter. Some warts.
Lamellae (gills): Adnexed, crowded gills. Arctic blue with a crystal blue bioluminescent glow. Produces crystal blue spore print. Additionally, sticky, vine-like tendril structures hang from the underside of the pileus, bearing edible glowing globules of spores.
Stipe (stem): Rough texture, similar to tree bark. Measures 6 - 8 metres tall, 3 - 4 metres across at the bulbous base, and 2 - 3 metres across where it connects to the cap. Mulberry purple in colour, with indigo and aquamarine streaks.
Veil and Annulus: The cortinate partial veil disintigrates after the first five years of the mushtree's life.
Hyphae and mycelia: In the immediate vivinity of the mushtree, the hyphae are rhyzoidal and range in colour from moss green to turquoise to aquamarine. Further away from the mushtree, these colours fade.

Growth Rate & Stages

Teal caps grow at a rate of about 30cm a year, taking 40 years to reach their full height. They can live for up to 60 years, after which they shrivel and decay and are eventually reabsorbed into the earth. However, their mycelium networks can survive indefinitely, as long as there are sufficient nutrients available.
