'Hazuki, Night's Sentinel' (Japanese: [haz -u- ki])

"Where the moon's light touches, you shall know clarity and comfort. Take solace, good traveler; for your path will be watched over by the Night's Sentinel, and those who endanger it will find his fury upon them!"

Created by Tybris (Me)

Lord of Moonlight Hazuki

A soothing light amidst the shadows of the night, a graceful guide to those who seek him, a vigilant sentinel against that which they consider unnatural, and a broken-hearted brother, reclusive and sullen. Few can deny the validity of these depictions. They embody much of what the 'Lord of Moonlight' is and stands for.
Much like the rest of their kin, Hazuki was once a 'Servitor', bound to the machinations of a maker whose fate lay steeped in tyranny. In time, however, they would rise above their station and become the keeper of the moon itself. By their design, the moon presides over the night as a watchful sentinel, imparting its grace to all who seek it, ceding the heavens to the sun as dawn breaks. This balance has endured upheaval, calamity, and dire confrontations alike. When the usurpation of 'The Demiurge' came to pass; Hazuki stood astride their brother, Arshan, at the vanguard of 'The Ascended' and their retribution. When the dust settled, they too partook in the reformation of the world as 'The Ascended' sought it to be.
As this "new world" came to be; Hazuki would play the part of the sentinel in the night. When dawn faded into dusk, Hazuki would be there to relieve Arshan of their vigil. While the moon lay high in the sky, they would watch over all that they could. Travelers would be guided to their destination, heeding the silver beneficence that shimmered in the darkness. The lost could take comfort in the moon's glow, finding solace until the light of dawn returned. Seekers would find what they sought in the shadows, for the moon would grant them clarity, and leaders would know the vigilance to defend their people from within and without.
Even as the world slipped into disorder once more, and the ties that bound began to fray; Hazuki remained vigilant. Their passions remained tempered, and their grace persists even now, despite the wounds of the heart wrought against them. Though they held no love for violence, Hazuki would not be afraid to take up arms in the defense of their flock, or the removal of the abhorrent from their domain. Adorned in silver talismans and robes that seemed sewn from moonlight, brandishing a katana forged from lunar flames, they would strike out against that which opposed them without relent. To witness them in battle was akin to witnessing an artist more so than a warrior. The field was their canvas, the blood spilled, their ink.
Alas; no matter how watchful the 'Night's Sentinel' was; there were things that came to pass in the shadows not even they could see. Malevolent machinations were brought to bear by those who had no love for this "inquisitorial seeker." Wars would be waged in the shadows of the night, and death dealt in the darkness. All the while, the world teetered towards upheaval once more, and when the time came for the wrath of mortals to fall upon 'The Ascended', Hazuki would be unable to protect those dearest to them. Many would fall; only to rise again as something so abhorrent it struck fear into the very heart of the 'Lord of Moonlight'. Among those fallen was Arshan, the 'Warden of The Dawn', and above that, a brother to Hazuki.
Those who fell suffered a dire fate, one so wicked it would turn the stomachs of even the most resolute souls. Yet those who survived bear burdens of a different kind. For Hazuki, the wounds carved into their heart speak of great guilt. Unable to change what has come to pass; and fearing the fate that awaits them should they fall, the once vigilant 'Lord of Moonlight' has since withdrawn and become reclusive, their sullen heart bleeding for those they could not spare, their eyes blind to those they may yet save.
Yet not all hope is lost; for whilst the heart still beats, it may yet heal...

Divine Domains

The Moon, Night, Clarity, Temperance, Travelers, Weaving, Vigilance, Grace, and Leadership. They were sometimes also associated with the tides. This is due to their bond with Nymia.

Artifacts

"Tsuki-okori (Moonfury)": Supposedly a second blade forged by Hazuki himself, and bestowed to one of their most trusted mortal lieutenants. It is said that this sword was forged in the fires of the moon itself, and thus can bring its wrath to bear upon the wielder's foes. The legendary 'Moonfury', as it is referred to in the common tongue, has since been lost following the death of its wielder. Many have sought the blade, though none have found it. Its present fate, and any potential tampering it may have endured, remains unknown. Hazuki considers the loss of this artifact to be a tragedy, and would surely be invigorated to see it being wielded by a worthy soul once more.   "Moonpearls": Precious stones plucked from clams that lay deep beneath the sea, then blessed by the moon's grace. These artifacts are somewhat common among those faithful to Hazuki; possessing minor, but useful boons which can be harnessed by their wielders. Whilst the moon is waxing, it is said these pearls can be harnessed to offer light in the dark and can be crushed to release a moderate measure of rejuvenating essence to either the owner or an individual nearby them. When the moon is waning into darkness, the pearl's benefits change. It imparts a measure of elusive grace to its wielder and can be crushed to temporarily shroud them in the moon's shadow, concealing them from sight. Pearls such as these are often bestowed as shows of goodwill, or alongside prayers for one's safety when one embarks upon a journey.   "Moonsilk robes": Elegant kimonos and other forms of robes, sewn by Hazuki himself. It is said these garments are unmatched in their quality and are almost impervious to wear. It will take centuries before they even begin to lose their luster. These beautiful garments are blessed with the grace and swiftness of their maker, naturally aiding those who wear them with feats of agility. It is for this reason that many aspiring swordsmen faithful to the 'Lord of Moonlight' covet such attire. Alas; such things are reserved for those who have garnered the respect and companionship of Hazuki, and so they are rare indeed; doubly so since despondence has claimed his heart.   "Crescent masks": Ornate masks hewn from blessed silver and shaped in the likeness of the moon. These are often worn by warriors and hunters who prey upon the evils that lurk in the dark. These blessed face-guards, made in the likeness of Hazuki's own, grant the wearer the ability to pierce the gloom of the night and scour the world unimpeded by its gloom. Whilst they are not distinctly uncommon, it is rare for an individual to be in possession of such a thing without first garnering the respect of Hazuki's agents. This is doubly true of those who dwell outside of the land these masks are made in.

Holy Books & Codes

Those who hold faith towards Hazuki close to their heart often seek solace in the teachings of the 'Keikai no makimono', otherwise known as 'The Scrolls of Vigilance'. Within these ornate, and hand-inked objects are the records of the wisdom, guidance, and the tenets of the faith as described by Hazuki and their most loyal agents throughout history. Religious centers would have larger, more regal versions of these scrolls, whilst individuals would be liable to keep smaller, more personal copies for their own sake.   These personal iterations also had spare space at the bottom of their length, specifically kept for poems that the bearer sought to write. By virtue of such, no two copies of the 'Keikai no makimono' are the same, for each carries a part of its owner upon its surface.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

The traditional divine symbols associated with Hazuki are as follows:   -Prayer talismans with scripture dedicated to the moon etched upon them.   -Silver pieces of jewelry that are shaped like the various phases of the moon.   -'Moonpearls'.   -Symbols of the moon etched into the weaponry of the faithful.   -Statuettes of a crescent moon with Hazuki sat upon it, sewing from its light.   Holy sights dedicated to Hazuki often have sigils and scripture etched into their foundations and structures. The above symbols tend to form the basis for such designs, though a measure of variation is to be expected.

Tenets of Faith

Whilst the 'Lord of Moonlight' has been known to bestow a considerable measure of advice upon their faithful following, there are some core beliefs that have endured the test of time and the probing of skeptics alike. They are built around the notions of temperance, vigilance, guidance, traveling, grace, and leadership. The most important tenets can be found below. These include:   -"Failure opens our eyes to improvement. Do not blind yourself to these lessons."   -"Suffer not the malefactor nor the monster that dwells within darkness. Remain vigilant to their machinations."   -"It is the duty of those who lead to ward those who follow them."   -"Just as the moon waxes and wanes, so too must we be willing to adapt as circumstance demands."   -"Remain watchful wherever possible. Misfortune rears its head at any lapse in judgment."   -"If the heart yearns to roam; do not deny it. There is wisdom only the road can provide."   -"Take solace in the moon's grace, for whilst it yet shines amidst the heavens, so too will you know its comfort among the night."   -"Impart your wisdom to those you may yet guide. This kindness may serve many, in time."   -"Temper the heart with the mind's resolve; do not permit rash emotion to cloud your vision."   -"Evil cannot be abided. It must be rooted out by those able wherever it lurks."

Holidays

Though there are numerous holidays and celebrations dedicated to Hazuki; some of the most well-known occasions can be found below. These include:   -"Tsuki to kai no matsuri": Otherwise referred to as 'The Moon and Sea Festival', this auspicious occasion is held most commonly during the spring after the last ice has melted. It is a celebration of renewal, commitments, and rebirth; alongside Hazuki and Nymia's unity. Many of Hazuki's followers make their new year's resolutions during this time. Lovers among the faithful strive to wed around this time of year, as though to honour the divine and thus receive their blessings. As the sun sets, the festivities begin, and they will last for a full week. Great displays of graceful dance and musicality are performed on structures built atop bodies of water. The routines performed atop such buildings often incorporate the water around them, leading to truly majestic performances. The streets come alive with celebration, and the skies sparkle with fireworks. Food, gifts, and other trinkets are sold in abundance amidst wedding ceremonies that bring further mirth to the communities partaking in this celebration. As the festivities proceed, officials deliver speeches and declare their intentions for the new year to their followers. The festival concludes at night with a grand retelling of Hazuki and Nymia's love, performed through a mixture of dance, song, and theatre.   -"Michiyuku hito no wakare": Also known as 'The Wayfarer's Goodbye', this is a small celebration usually held by individual communities as opposed to wider collectives or nations. These celebrations are dedicated to respected individuals the night before they begin a great journey. Dinner is held communally, and personalized gifts are bestowed to the traveler in question. A small measure of revelry is had beneath the moon before the participants take to their rest with the coming of the dawn. The traveler in question will slumber until evening; where they will rise and be greeted with a final meal, prayers, and fond farewells, before venturing forth beneath the light of the moon.   -"Nenmatsu matsuri": Otherwise referred to as the 'Year's End Festival', this is a celebration held by the faithful towards the end of summer or the beginning of autumn. During this festival, Hazuki's followers offer their admiration towards the 'Lord of Moonlight', praising them for seeing them guided through the year. Great carnivals are held through the streets, with food and gifts a-plenty. Official figures and religious spokespersons deliver speeches in commemoration of their community's achievements throughout the year. Those who partake in the festival often revel and dance into the late hours of the night, whilst others take time to bestow reverence and offerings towards Hazuki at their local temples or shrines. Towards the end of the festival; lanterns are lit in honor of the dead, before being released towards the moon, where they float upwards. Each lantern contains a prayer or poem dedicated to the deceased, in hopes that they will take solace in its contents upon receiving it.   -"Senshi no saikai": Is also known as 'The Warrior's Reunion'. It is most commonly held between those who act as loyal warriors of the faith, or monster hunters with an affinity towards Hazuki. Traditionally held during the beginning of the winter, those who have survived the year's turmoil will return to meet with one another beneath the moon. There they will drink and share tales of their own journeys, practice their martial craft, compose new poetry and offer prayers in the name of the fallen. For groups that rest during the winter months, this is seen as the beginning of such respite.   -"Nitsuku no oiwai": Held during Lunar eclipses, the 'Eclipse Celebration' is a time of reverence and caution to the followers of Hazuki. Lunar Eclipses are treated with as much fear as respect, for they represent the fury of the moon. It is believed that such a thing marks a call to arms by Hazuki himself. Many take to their temples and shrines, praying towards Hazuki during this unsettling time; whilst cautionary tales are shared among the populace. Theatre is occasionally performed among larger communities, often detailing the wickedness of the faith's enemies and the monsters that dwell in the dark. They also warn listeners about not falling prey to excessive emotion, and that there is virtue in temperance. These lessons are taken to heart by most of the warriors of Hazuki, for though this cosmic event lends them great strength; it promises terrible things should they become drunk on its power. Such is the nature of power without control. Offerings are left at the temples and shrines of the faith in the hopes that such will bring clemency and good fortunes following the eclipse's end. Beneath the bloody moon, Hazuki's loyal warriors march forth to heed the will of their master in rooting out the evils displayed in the tales and theatre shown during the festival.   Many of the other festivities dedicated to Hazuki and the moon are often defined by individual nations and communities. These groups may also have their own adaptations of the above depending on their own culture, and so on.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

To safeguard the moon and all those who find solace in its grace, to maintain their vigil over those who travel in the night, to cast out the wicked that dwell among the dark, and to guide their flock upon a path of temperance and fulfillment.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Hazuki stands as a lithe, graceful figure. They possessed a build that appeared both agile, and easy upon the eye. They were a head and shoulders taller than most of the middling mortal races. Save for a few, well-hidden scars, their form was devoid of blemishes. No affliction tainted them, nor did any injury of the flesh impede them. From the perspective of a human, Hazuki would appear as an androgyne individual in their mid to late twenties, physically speaking.   Alas, in the years that followed their retreat into 'The Silver Palace', Hazuki has fallen prey to ennui and neglect.

Body Features

In their native form, Hazuki stood at seven-foot-four. They had pale skin with a faint blush to their cheeks. His body hair is snow-like and his frame is lithe and supple; possessing hidden strength befitting of one whose arts demanded precision as much as dexterity. Delicate hands with pianist's fingers adorn toned arms, fit to wield their lunar blade or weave moonlight as circumstances demanded. Though their frame is marked by a few scars, they are often hidden by their choice of attire. That being said, Hazuki does not view them with any considerable measure of distaste. They are viewed as mistakes, and lessons they had the opportunity to learn from. Many consider their physical form to be beautiful; something Hazuki takes quiet satisfaction in.   Their androgyne appearance, and the views of others upon such, does not impede or otherwise affect their perception of self, however. Hazuki is comfortable in their masculinity regardless of such.

Facial Features

Hazuki's visage was one that was androgyne, evoking grace and temperance, and in the same moment, quiet fervency. His features are keen, blending both softness and sharpness together to yield an elegant countenance. Full lips often impart gentle comfort to those they look upon. Their angular eyes, crowned by thin brows, bear the pale hues of moonlight and their face is framed by long locks of snow-like hair. Often, he has it tied up in a long ponytail, with various ornaments decorating this binding, each hewn from silver and silk. These pieces of jewelry are engraved with symbols and markings dedicated to the moon.    As the phases of the moon change, so too does the color of their eyes and hair. The closer it gets to a full moon, the lighter their hair and eyes become, whereas when it is closer to a new moon, their hair and eyes are near black. During an eclipse, their eyes will also shift to reflect such; with differences being observable depending on whether it is a lunar, or solar eclipse.   It should be noted, however, that just like their body; their androgyne appearance and the views of others upon such do not hamper or otherwise affect their perception of self. Hazuki remains assured of their masculinity regardless of such.

Identifying Characteristics

Hazuki's most identifying features are their eyes and hair. The shifting of the lunar cycle is visible within them and lends credence to the notion that they are the most striking parts of his visage.

Physical quirks

Hazuki is an individual whose gestures exuded poise, elegance, and dexterity. Seldom was anything out of place with them, save for when their emotions were so impassioned that not even their formidable temperance could hold them in check. Their quirks and motions would be at their most precise during formal occasions when in the presence of their fellow 'Ascended', or among the company of their most loyal agents. In calmer contexts, they were known to be softer in their movements; imparting more by way of comfort, than sharpened vigilance.   When in a room with Hazuki, however, they are subtly observant as a near-constant. Often their senses will be reaching out from their location, remaining alert to the nature of their present environment. Their ears will prick at the slightest sound, their eyes swift to move upon new appearances, and so on. Rare are the days in which they are not seen displaying such vigilance. Even within the safety of 'The Silver Palace', they do not shed it.   It is said by some, mostly those who oppose them, that their graceful motions inspire fear. They know well their capacity with the sword, and their flowing motions imply much as to their capabilities.   Alas, following the rise of 'The Spurned', much of their grace has since been lost. Their motions, whilst retaining a measure of their former poise, have become languid and non-committal. The burdens of their grief weigh heavily upon them. This is but one of the results brought forth by such.

Special abilities

'The Ascended' possess immense measures of power and magical capability, and Hazuki is no exception in such regards. By virtue of their station and the domains they held sway over, Hazuki's strength lay steeped in the powers of the moon. They were capable of influencing this stellar body and its energies with an unmatched proficiency. The only members of 'The Ascended' who could hope to compare in such regard were Arshan and 'The King among the Stars'. Their versatility with this power is truly something to behold. Be it imparting gentle guidance to those lost in the night, mending the wounds of those who suffer, or bringing ruin upon the malefactors that dwell in the shadows, the potency of Hazuki's craft cannot be understated.   Curiously, however, the efficacy of their powers appears to shift based on the phase of the moon. As it grows fuller, their benevolent arts appear to gain additional potency, whilst during its darkest phases, their offensive abilities find their strength bolstered in turn.   Lunar eclipses appear to usher in brief, but unparalleled strength to Hazuki and their faithful agents. Solar Eclipses allow him and his followers to wield their powers during the day without impediment.

Apparel & Accessories

Traditionally, Hazuki chose to dress in finely woven kimonos. Rumor has it that they would sew their own garments from moonlight itself. Often, these garments would be dressed in hues of blue, purple, or moonlit silver. Each would have artistic designs woven into their fabric, such that their attire would paint vistas in of itself. Decorative segments and finer details would often be accompanied by words or phrases in the tongue of their following. These could range from prayers to poems, or ought else besides.   These kimonos would be worn alongside various trinkets and items of significance to them. From charms to rosaries with the likeness of prayer beads, to ornate pins for their hair. Much of this would be hewn either from silver or silk, and would often find itself decorated with pearls. Hazuki held a particular fondness for these kinds of jewels, both because of their similarities to the moon, and because they remind them of 'Nymia', his beloved.   In times of conflict, however, they would be swift to don a more open robe, with loose leggings to permit the widest range of motion. Armor forged from moon-blessed silver and sacred wood would be donned, and a mask shaped like a crescent moon would ward their visage. Then, blade in hand, they would stride forth to meet their foes; and make art of their demise.

Specialized Equipment

Though Hazuki employs a variety of tools and implements to facilitate their aims as an 'Ascended', some of their most commonly used equipment can be found below. They are as follows:   -A katana forged from steel and silver, blessed by the moon's grace. This blade, etched with symbols of power, has been the primary weapon of Hazuki since the days of war against 'The Demiurge'. It is capable of enveloping itself in lunar magics reflective of the moon's place in its cycle and unleashing its wrath to devastating effect. It is said the blade is sharpened to such a degree that little if anything could hope to stop it. This, alongside their moon-engraved charm, is the primary focus through which they channel their divine might.   -A sewing kit hand-made by himself. These artisan's tools have been used on many occasions when they have fancied new garments or wished to impart gifts upon those he held dear. It is said that the needle is capable of spinning moonlight into the finest silkthread.   -A moon-engraved charm with a pearl at its heart. This, alongside their blade, is the primary channeling focus through which they channel their divine might. It appears to hold some sentimental value to Hazuki, perhaps because of the jewel that makes up its centerpiece.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The history of Hazuki is filled with vigilance, heartbreak, and the burdens of duty. They have endured the hardships of bloodshed and upheaval, they have partaken in the usurpation of a truly divine force, and unlike many of their kin; Hazuki lived to tell the tale of their fall in all its wretched nature. Their story spans millennia, intertwined with the tales of both 'The Demiurge' and many of their fellow 'Ascended'. To fully understand their story, however, it is best we start from the beginning.   The origins of 'Hazuki' were no different than the rest of 'The Ascended'. They were born into life as a 'Servitor', sworn to the will of 'The Demiurge' and 'The Great Work' they sought to complete. Bestowed the name 'Helle', they were raised among 'Servitors' dedicated to the creation of solutions for the harnessing and control of the sun's power. Whilst the stellar flame had those who tended it, striving to ensure it never burned too bright, nor fell dark, they could only do so much. Much of Helle's early life revolved around the education their fellow 'Servitors' provided them. They were taught of the world as it was, and granted insight into the tasks they would one day be obligated to undertake. They were also informed of the stringent rulings they were expected to work within, such that 'The Great Work' would not be jeopardized by the actions of those who attended to it.   Upon reaching adulthood, Helle was quick to grow into their role; maturing swiftly and soon finding themselves steeped in the research of their fellow 'Servitors'. A quiet but vigilant study, they were swift to notice things that others did not, which would soon lead to newfound breakthroughs and potential solutions that might aid those who tended to the sun. Whilst few of these solutions found immediate usage, and fewer still found any measure of success; Helle was often part of the groups that created material that yielded results. Their keen eyes and sharp mind were instrumental in such matters.   Nonetheless, for all their efforts; the sun persisted in being one of the greatest blockades against the advancement of 'The Great Work'. Attempting to find a solution that was both stable enough to withstand the heat of the stellar flame without being left up to chance, proving woefully inefficient, or endangering the facets of 'The Great Work' was far more difficult than anticipated. Try as they might, precious few solutions could hold their weight when put into practice, and the frustration of 'The Demiurge' only grew as the delays mounted. 'Servitors' came and went, discussing potential ways to overcome this challenge, but their ideas all remained within the stringent limitations of 'The Great Work'. None of these ideas had succeeded. For many, this was but another part of the conundrum; they would solve the issue within the constraints of 'The Great Work', or it would not be solved at all.   But there were those who considered that the possibility may lie beyond the remit of such a thing, and Helle would come to be among them. At some point during this arduous process; 'The Demiurge' proposed the idea of compelling the light of the sun to fly about the world in a great ring. This would allow its entirety to bask in its radiance, preventing any further loss of progress due to the lack of the stellar flame's presence'. Helle was made aware of this potential solution, and though it was admirable; the dangers it posed were vast. Whilst they were not the one to voice this to 'The Demiurge', they began to ponder how such difficulties and dangers might be surpassed.   In time, these mere ruminations soon became the kindling for action. They would be among those who looked to more unconventional solutions to the present problem, solutions that would stray from the doctrines of 'The Great Work', skirting the line between what was permissible, and what was not. As these efforts persisted, Helle found themselves impassioned by this pursuit. They had always sought to serve 'The Demiurge', as their kind were wont to do, but their newfound drive began to feel... personal. They wished to see the work of their peers guided to newfound heights, and by their vigilance, they could discover vast and wonderous new discoveries. Spurred onwards by this heightened motivation, they pursued their cause relentlessly...   And in so doing, their efforts were spotted by 'The Demiurge'.   Though Helle did not bring their designs to 'The Demiurge' directly, they were among those who had garnered a cautious interest from their maker. One day, whilst the 'Servitor' was hard at work attempting to circumvent some of the flaws the ring of light presented, 'The Demiurge' decided to approach them. Rare were the days in which such things occurred. Helle was bid to explain their deviant studies and levy any solutions they may have brought to bear. So they did; speaking of the construction of a celestial body that would chase the sun, siphoning a measure of the stellar flame's essence and redirecting it upon the lands beneath it. Lands that would have otherwise been left to darkness, or endangered by the potency of the ring of light. Following their explanations, 'The Demiurge' dwelled in silence for some time. If they had any doubts as to whether Helle was another of the deviant 'Servitors', they were thoroughly dispelled by their ambitious displays of ingenuity.   Yet 'The Demiurge' did not offer them scorn towards Helle, for in them they saw opportunity, just as they had with their fellow deviants. They were of the mind that harnessing their talents on their terms would benefit 'The Great Work' far more than the alternative; a surgical removal of these divergent 'Servitors'.   Thus Helle, like many of their soon-to-be associates, was invited to meet 'The Demiurge' once more within the very heart of their citadel. Helle obliged their request, and with little delay; packed their things and ventured forth across the infant world and into its 'Heart'. Upon their arrival; they came to realize that they were not the only 'Servitor' selected by their maker. Several others lingered, and more were soon to arrive; all awaiting that which 'The Demiurge' had brought them here for. Among these 'Servitors' was one named Ilios. They would go on to become 'Arshan', a close friend and eventual "brother" to Helle. The two exchanged a brief greeting before all fell silent. 'The Demiurge' emerged from further within their citadel, and sat upon their throne. The 'Servitors' knelt before their maker, awaiting their will.   It was here that 'The Demiurge' offered their bargain. They explained that try as they might, the world lacked heart. Where success was found, it was grand, yes, but it felt forever lacking. Much was in order, and yet satisfaction was nowhere to be found. Atop this, there was a myriad of challenges and emergent issues the world faced. The delicate balance of 'The Great Work' stood imperiled, and they could not hope to attend to every issue before it grew beyond their control, even with the 'Servitors' to aid them. Such lamentations brought them to this moment, for these deviant 'Servitors', clad in ingenuity, and individuality could prove the key to the salvation of 'The Great Work'. Together, they could bring stability to the world and achieve far more than 'The Demiurge' could hope to achieve alone. In so doing; the legacy of their maker could be assured. That was motive enough to dissuade the fearful musings that plagued their mind when regarding those they had summoned. Thus; in exchange for a promise of their renewed loyalty to their maker and their vision, 'Helle', and those gathered, would be granted an unprecedented gift.   To each of them, 'The Demiurge' would bequeath a measure of their divine spark. A wealth of strength so vast they would become deific in their own right. They would be given the right to take new names befitting of their station, bestowed command over those they once worked aside if they did not hold it already, the means to shift their form if they so desired, and far more besides. All this was to be theirs if they accepted and adhered to the pledge; and accept it, they did.   Thus Helle cast off their prior name; and took 'Hazuki' for their own. It was a decision that took a small measure of deliberation, but they found a deep sense of contentment in their newfound identity. Empowered by the Divine Spark, Hazuki turned to their prior designs, eager to test their newfound powers and see if there was merit to their musings. Whilst perusing their plans, their ear was caught by Arshan's declaration of moving the sun, claiming that it would solve the great conundrum it posed for 'The Great Work'. This notion coincided with their designs but lacked the presence of the moon. Those who gathered around Arshan offered conjecture about his designs, but it would not be until Hazuki approached with their own suggestions that a true solution was found. Hazuki proposed the addition of their moon to Arshan's solution, claiming it would circumvent the need for other, riskier alternatives whilst still facilitating the desired results. A world that seldom, if ever, went without light.   As it was, the moon appeared to be the crucial piece to the puzzle that Arshan's design lacked. It held the strength to withstand the stellar flame's might and had the capacity to reflect the energy it siphoned back upon the world in a suitably controlled fashion. By all accounts, it was the key to the success of Arshan's plan. Rather than being affronted by this flaw in his craft, however, they welcomed the insight of Hazuki. This marked the true beginning of their millennia-spanning friendship. After some measure of deliberation, the two refined their designs to the best of their abilities, knowing that they would put them into practice once 'The Ascended' were officially pronounced as aides to 'The Demiurge'. When the time came, they would join their kinsmen in celebrating their newly anointed stations; reveling with unprecedented mirth.   Following their official declaration as aides to 'The Demiurge', Arshan and Hazuki were swift to set to work. They marshaled the 'Servitors' pledged to their service and enacted their plan with renewed determination. Together, they wielded their powers to call forth the vast reserves of debris within the nearby void and condensed them above the heavens until they formed the foundation of the moon. Hazuki and his servitors would go on to painstakingly smooth and refine this spatial body until it was the pale sphere many recognize it as today, an ordeal measured in decades. Only once such was complete did they move towards the next stage of their plan. During this time another of their newfound kinsmen approached the pair, wishing to aid them in their efforts through the use of advanced crafts they had recently brought into being. They spoke of how their intent had inspired them, and they sought only to help, but it had taken them some time to pluck up the courage. This diminutive but earnest 'Ascended' was known as 'Vulca', and they would go on to become a dear friend of Arshan and Hazuki both. Their offers were accepted by the ambitious pair.   With these newfound tools, Arshan would spur the sun into motion, wielding the strength of the divine spark and the aid of their fellow 'Servitors' to compel the stellar fire to move around the world according to the calculations specified by Hazuki. It took the very best of their advanced technologies and newfound powers to achieve this, and the prospect of failure was ever looming. A single misstep, a single miscalculation, and all would have been for naught. Arshan and Hazuki were zealous souls, however, and they would not accept failure, not when they stood so close to overcoming this great trial. Through toil and tribulation, they eventually found their triumph. The sun achieved its proper orbit. Now all that remained was to spur the moon to follow and bestow it with the sun's excess. Vulca's implements proved vital in this effort, just as they had with the sun. Hazuki oversaw the movement of their creation; adjusting their endeavors as necessary to ensure they found success. Together, the three saw the moon advance in the shadow of the sun, maintaining a steady pace, drawing closer only when it was absolutely necessary. This would, in time, lay the foundation for events such as eclipses. Forever chasing the sun, the moon drank deep of its light, and when the sun left lands in shadow, the moon cast its grace upon them in pale tapers, aided by the countless stars long lost to the void.   So it was that the sun and moon found their union, and the three basked in a well-earned victory. Returning to the world's cheer, and the approval of their maker; Hazuki, Vulca, and Arshan found deep satisfaction in their work's completion; something neither had truly felt in a long, long while. In time, their fellow 'Ascended' began to achieve feats of a similar scale, and through the variety of perspectives they offered and pursuits they undertook, the world found its 'soul'. Even the most stoic or envious of 'Servitors' could not deny it. As 'The Demiurge' sat upon their throne, overseeing all that had come to pass, a smile graced their lips. This marked a new chapter in 'The Great Work', an age of great advancement, and through the efforts of their aides, the assurance of their legacy.   Alas, such greatness was not destined to last.   For a time, all was as it should have been. 'The Ascended' achieved things the likes of which the world had yet to see, and much to the satisfaction of 'The Demiurge', it was achieved contently within the confines of their vision for the world. Friendships blossomed among 'The Ascended', and in due course, ought else besides. As the centuries wound on, 'Hazuki' found himself becoming enamored with another 'Ascended' named 'Nymia'. She was charged with presiding over the sea, the tides, and all that which concerned water. Though at first Hazuki was bashful in Nymia's company, they would come to be close confidants to one another, and eventually; lovers. When circumstances permitted him a measure of reprieve; Hazuki would often visit Arshan, whom they came to consider a bond-brother by the height of the age. Often, they would discuss their achievements, the way of the world, and what could be in spite of the rules that bound them. Vulca would also engage in these discussions from time to time, usually when they visited their kinsmen with some newfound invention or idea to gleefully offer. Utopia was unattainable, but this was certainly close.   But 'The Ascended' were ambitious souls, and where ambitious lies, contention was sure to follow. As time wound on, the inventions and designs crafted by 'The Ascended' grew increasingly varied and ever more ambitious. Concern began to flit among the mind of their maker; for it seemed some were beginning to stray from the order of things as they should be. It was a natural bi-product of their ever-evolving individuality. At first, they were content to allow these 'flirtations' with the way of things, hoping that perhaps in so doing, they would find their contentment, and return to a measure of normalcy. The reality was far from this, however. Where one took an inch, another took more, and before long 'The Demiurge' found themselves stepping in to guide, or otherwise chide their aides for their contributions which rapidly began to stray from acceptable limits. Politeness was traded for frustration, discontent, and eventually, fury. Neither side stood to gain, and the more rebellious souls among 'The Ascended' did not take kindly to this scorn. Two among those discontented were Dalla and Vulca, who felt themselves unfairly curtailed by the agreement they had once found liberating.   As matters began to descend into discontent, Hazuki opted to play the role of an observer. Much of their work had them placed upon their moon, which afforded them a measure of much-needed distance from the disputes between their kinsmen and their maker. It was this distance that allowed them to view matters with a more objective eye than most; and in so doing, see the dangerous path 'The Demiurge' now walked. Atop this, they were also privy to the qualms and frustrations of many of their peers. Many saw Hazuki as an honest soul, one in which they could confide their woes and seek counsel. In so doing; Hazuki was among the burdened few who understood, at least to some degree, the scope of this discontent, and the dire circumstances it implied if the course could not be rectified. To that end, when those who remained in the good graces of 'The Demiurge', such as Arshan, approached him; he would impart what wisdom he could in an attempt to circumvent the ties that bound from fraying further. Sometimes these insights helped stem the tide, but it soon became clear that such efforts merely delayed the inevitable.   Eventually, the contention between 'The Ascended' and 'The Demiurge' came to a head due to the actions of 'Dalla', nature's tender, and Vulca. Dissatisfied to the point of defiance and harboring great ambitions; they wished to create life of their own, in the same fashion as 'The Servitors', but with the freedom they yearned for. They all knew well enough that such was forbidden by 'The Demiurge', but they persisted in spite of such. No amount of well-intended dissuading would shake them from their path, and such attempts often ended in private, but heated disputes between them and those who sought to curtail their efforts. Resolved; Dalla and Vulca declared their intentions to 'The Demiurge', astride another of their peers. They were soundly rebuked, and their maker offered them little but grave words and ire for their blatant disregard for the pledge they had sworn and adhered to since the beginning. Despondent, Dalla and Vulca left 'The Heart of The World' and returned to their respective domains; though this would not be the last wound this issue would draw upon the ties that bound, fraying as they were.   This event marked a dire turning point; both in the state of affairs between 'The Ascended' and their maker, and within Hazuki himself. From the near beginning, he had watched, heard, and advised, and he had seen enough to start souring his temperament towards 'The Demiurge'.   Before long, he was greeted by a despondent Arshan, claiming that he was unable to turn Dalla and Vulca from their path; and that he had since returned from advising 'The Demiurge' on what was to be done next. He spoke of the fury in the eyes of their maker, the likes of which he had never seen before. Arshan went on to detail how they had made 'The Demiurge' promise they would bring no harm upon 'The Ascended', for 'The Great Work' could not withstand such a thing. Distressed as he was; Arshan sought to believe that their actions had spared matters from the brink, and Hazuki could not bring himself to rob his bond-brother of such. He consoled his brother as best he could, before sending him on his way. Alas; this was not to be the end of things. Not for Hazuki, and not for the rest of them besides. To the 'Lord of Moonlight', the mere notion that 'The Demiurge' would have brought willful harm upon those they regarded as children, had Arshan not intervened, was enough to shake the loyalty Hazuki held towards them. He could empathize with the frustrations of their maker, but this was a line crossed. Hazuki's bond with them was brought all too close to its breaking point...   And before long, it would be made to snap.   There was an uneasy peace following Hazuki's sorrowful meeting with Arshan, but it was ephemeral. They took what solace they could in Nymia's presence, but even their bond could not dissuade the concern that bubbled within them. Then one fateful night, as Hazuki watched over the world from high above, he was approached by Dalla and Vulca. Amidst the shadow of darkened skies did they confess their intention. To defy 'The Demiurge' and give life to a race of their own; the first 'Giants'. It did not take long for Hazuki to discern that they were resolved in their path and that naught he could say would stay them from it. He knew of the fury that awaited the two of them should their actions be discovered, but he saw in their hearts an innocent desire. The desire to nourish the world they presided over with new life, and to prove to their maker that such beings could exist without detriment to their work. As such; no matter how he tried to resolve himself, Hazuki found he could only concede to their intentions.   He would not partake of their quiet rebellion; but he would warn them to cover their tracks, for their absence would soon be noted. Hazuki would strive to keep their secret to the best of his abilities in the hopes that it would buy them time enough to fulfill their designs. Perhaps then they might have achieved enough to sway the mind of 'The Demiurge', he hoped.   But such was not to be.   No matter the measures these rebellious souls put into place to veil their treachery, their efficacy would prove insufficient. Before long, the 'Servitors' grew anxious at the absence of their masters. Rumors began to circulate among the followers of Dalla and Vulca that they had left to attend to business in the far reaches of the world, though they had given little detail as to when they expected to return. These rumors reached Arshan, who in turn came to question his brother on the matter, hoping that he might know more about this sudden, and suspicious turn of events. He explained that word had already reached the ear of 'The Demiurge', and they were incensed at this unexplained absence, fearing intransigence. Hazuki was initially evasive, but their deflection could not long withstand the persistence of their brother. They confessed the intentions of their wayward kinsmen, in all their grand, and defiant nature. He sought the forgiveness of their brother; for it was a betrayal of a kind, to have withheld this vital information for as long as he had, but he could not have been sure it would not have reached 'The Demiurge' and endangered those they both cared for. Hazuki had become jaded by their maker's behavior, but that distrust was not meant for Arshan, however pragmatic it was to apply it upon him.   Fortunately, though scorned, Arshan was willing to set aside his differences with his brother. He knew that the defiance of his lover and close friend would bring about a fury in 'The Demiurge' that they could not hope to restrain. There was no time for them to quarrel now. The margin for action was slim, but if they arrived quickly enough, perhaps they could circumvent tragedy. Anxious though they were, the two brothers resolved to try and left the keeping of the sun and moon in the hands of their 'Servitors'. Together they made haste towards the far reaches in search of Dalla and Vulca. Unbeknownst to them, however, 'The Demiurge' had already marched forth with the intent of quelling this act of insurgency.   Swift though they were; Hazuki and Arshan were unable to reach their kinsmen before 'The Demiurge', who, in a fit of rage, had already brought their blade upon the creations of Vulca and Dalla. Arshan and Hazuki were forced to tread through the remnants of the slaughter, bearing witness to the last of the 'First Giants' as they were cut down by 'The Demiurge'. Something within them began to fray; witnessing such wanton carnage, and the massacre of living spirits not unlike the 'Servitors'. The seeds of doubt began to fester within their minds; for if their maker could usher in such devastation upon these poor souls, innocent in all fashions save for the sin of being made into being, then what would befall them should the ire of their "parent" not be sated by the end of this culling?   By the time they reached their wayward kinsmen, it was already too late to spare the last of the 'Giants'. 'The Demiurge' stood before their wayward "children", eyes a-flame with vindictive fury, demanding that Vulca stand aside, that they might cut down the last of the wretched abominations he had spawned; whilst the diminutive 'Ascended' sobbed and begged their "parent" to cease in their crusade and let them live. Tensions only grew, and the two brothers soon joined in the protests; because they were the first to see what was doomed to follow if 'The Demiurge' did not see reason. Alas... their maker refused the prospect of mercy and brought their blade towards the Giant, and Vulca therein. Hazuki tried to intervene, but 'The Demiurge' was too quick. The blade cut deep into Vulca, who fell to the ground. A second slash brought low the last of the 'Giants'. The pledge 'The Demiurge' swore to Arshan was broken, and in that moment, the brothers' bonds of loyalty shattered in kind. One of their maker's most loyal "children" finally turned their back on them. Hazuki and Arshan surged forth, laying their hands upon 'The Demiurge' as they forced him back from their wounded kinsmen.   Guilt-ridden and outraged; their maker blustered and spewed vitriol towards their chosen, decrying their ascendance as a mistake, and that they were unworthy of the freedoms offered. Not a word of sincere apology left them as they withdrew, their "children" left to nurse the wounded Vulca. Dalla was overtaken with grief, and Vulca was lost to despondence. Arshan was overcome with fury; and Hazuki? He felt disgusted by what his maker had become. A hypocrite, a butcher, and a callous tyrant. The wound that had been carved here severed any thread of pity or compassion Hazuki held for his maker. He had sinned, in direst fashion; and for that...   They would demand retribution.   Hazuki would be among the first to turn their back upon 'The Demiurge'. The figure that ruled over their work was unfit for their throne. The blood of one they considered a dear friend had been shed by one who had sworn a covenant never to do so. It sickened Hazuki to his core, and he would have them know the price for their contemptible actions. Astride his brother, Hazuki took to spreading the tale of Vulca's wounding to their fellow kinsmen. Though they had shared in their squabbles throughout the centuries, the notion that their own "parent" would broker such scorn towards them was nothing short of galvanizing. One by one, they cast off the shackles of their former loyalties, working in secret to prepare for their day of reckoning, slowly becoming a unified, hidden front against their former leader. Though he exonerated truth, Hazuki recognized the necessity of secrecy as they mustered, and took pains to preserve it. Nymia stood at his side, outraged by the fate that had befallen Vulca. The two spent many a night among the hidden places of the world, taking comfort in one another and steeling themselves for what was to come. Eventually, after much preparation; 'The Ascended' stood ready. Their maker was unfit to sit upon their throne, so they would see them cast from it.   Meanwhile, 'The Demiurge' found their guilt subsiding, and they beseeched 'The Ascended' to gather in 'The Heart of The World', so that they might reconcile this bloody mess in a fashion that suited their designs. They knew well enough the damage their wrath had caused, but perhaps their "children" would yet listen. Perhaps this matter could be salvaged. Yet not a single member of 'The Ascended' heeded their call. Not one. This was the second, grievous act of defiance. Enraged, 'The Demiurge' demanded their return, casting their voice to the highest heavens, that it might boom across the world no matter where his "children" lay.   They were met with silence.   So it was that 'The Demiurge' committed 'Servitors', the former flesh and blood of 'The Ascended', to retrieve their wayward "children". If they would not come willingly, then they would be brought before them by force. By the will of their maker, these 'Servitors' marched forth, scouring the world in search of their former leaders. Once they were crafters, menders, pathfinders, and so much more. Now they stood as the martial arm of their maker. In time, they would find 'The Ascended', for they had deigned to hide no longer. Not a single 'Servitor' returned; for they were either slain or routed and driven into hiding. Hazuki was among those who meted out such fates. His heart was already resolved on the matter.   Through this bloody act the reckoning of 'The Ascended' began; in all its wickedness.   What followed was nothing short of apocalyptic. 'The Ascended' brought their full might to bear, reinforced by arms and armaments the likes of which the world had never seen. 'The Demiurge' sent forth the 'Servitors' to restrain or otherwise remove their rogue aides, but to little avail. The world was brought to ruin, the great order overturned in a bloody expression of vengeance and outrage. The seas boiled, the sun cast down its fury upon the land, and the earth cracked and splintered. All that once was saw itself undone. The 'Servitors' were all but wiped from the face of the world whilst 'The Demiurge' retreated within its 'Heart', leaving their creations to perish in their stead. Such did little save to buy time, time with which they forged their contingency. 'The Sigil'. A great, cosmic truth that could not be undone by the likes of these usurpers, whose wickedness 'The Demiurge' now saw in themselves. For how could they have come to know such cruelty, if it did not fester within they who made them what they were?   Hazuki was with their brother at the head of the vanguard, astride their kinsmen, when the time came to confront 'The Demiurge' directly. Heedless to the demands of their maker for them to leave, having caused ruin enough, they brought their blade to bear upon their maker. A great battle ensued, and many of 'The Ascended' were injured; but in the end, they would prove the victors. Some called for 'The Demiurge' to be slain, to be done with this matter once and for all, but this was not to be their fate. Rather, after the suggestion of Vulca, it was decided that they would be stripped of their powers, imprisoned using their own tools, and forced to reside deep within 'The Heart'. They would be lost and forgotten, whilst those who cast them from their throne went on to redefine their legacy as they saw fit. A poetic end, so they surmised.   Hazuki held little qualm with this decision. They saw it as fitting penance for millennia of discontent, and the tyranny they inflicted upon his fellow kinsmen. 'The Demiurge' was stripped of their strength and bound by shackles hewn into life by the very tools of creation they had once commanded. Rancor and vitriol poured from their lips; decrying their "children" as false idols, who will know their fate when they too lay 'spurned' by those they loved, and that this will not be the end for all would be as it once was, in time. 'The Ascended' cared not for their maker's blustering, however true it would prove to be. They locked them away in the deepest reaches of 'The Heart of The World' and saw to it that they would never be found again.   So it was that 'The Demiurge' was cast from their throne, and Hazuki's part in their downfall came to an end.   When 'The Ascended' emerged from their maker's citadel, they saw the world aflame. It had been brought to the very brink by their fury. Such desolate vistas brought a wounded Hazuki to his knees. How high the cost of their rebellion had been. Nymia soon came to console him, but neither of them could deny the ruin they and their kinsmen had brought about. It was among the world's darkest hours, and hope was all but extinguished. But such was not to last. Carried by Arshan, a wounded Vulca seized the attention of their peers and declared that their duty to this world was unfinished; but they would no longer be constrained by the bindings of 'The Demiurge'. This world was theirs now, and they would see it restored as they saw fit. Beholding such a sight, 'The Ascended' found their resolve and pledged to remake it in accordance with their desires, and never to repeat the mistakes of their benefactor. When their strength returned to them, they would begin post-haste. Each would play their part in a painstaking process of trial and error, a process that took millennia to complete. Arshan would do their part astride Hazuki, ensuring the world never went without light as it was remade. In time, their efforts would be rewarded, and the world as it was prior to the emergence of 'The Spurned' would come to be. Verdant, wild, and untamed; presided over by 'The Ascended'. They would usher in their own children, the mortal races, and together brought rise to an age of splendor.   To see this age lasting, and fearing the nature of either a singular ruler as they had once known, or a world with no figures to guide its flocks, Hazuki would be among those who sought to establish a council of 'Ascended', such that they could govern together, and ensure greater collaboration and companionship between peers The majority accepted, though there were some who took a lonesome path, and others who rejected this notion, preferring the comfort of more select company that might serve their own machinations better. Their choice was accepted, and the infant council was formed after much deliberation. Together, they ensured this age of splendor was maintained, due in no small part to Hazuki's observations and graceful mediation.   As time wound on, however, fresh anxieties began to form. Just as they had deposed their maker, what if their own children would come to do the same? If they believed it possible, surely there would be those with ambition enough to try? There were those, Hazuki among them, who did not subscribe to these ideals, preferring instead to offer truth steeped in guidance, but it was clear that they would be outvoted by the council they had helped create. Though he held little love for this plan, he was invariably part of the process that gave rise to a grand, and vast deception. Distasteful though it was, history was re-written to portray 'The Demiurge' as a tyrannical presence 'The Ascended' overthrew, omitting the times of joy and satisfaction that had once been known to them. It was decreed that their deific strength made them untouchable to all but those who shared in their power. Their potency was unmatched. The world was remade to undo what this tyrant had wrought, and they would preside over their new domain. A lie steeped in truth, and it would be instilled into many of the religions that came to be formed. Through this, however, it would plant the first seed of their undoing.   The age of splendor carried on for centuries, and all who came to be in this time knew its glory and its riches. But like even the most sturdy times of contentment, it must invariably fade into dispassion.   The ambitions of 'Ascended' individuals began to transcend their former trappings, and their inexperience as leaders began to reap its toll. The mortal races and the nations they founded would find reason enough to look upon each other with disdain as often as with love. The same could be said of their makers. Conflict and cruelty were doomed to follow. Debates began to run rife throughout the council as to how they might best preside over their flocks. These would be exercises measured in decades, seeking answers to questions far beyond the simplicity of a singular answer. During these times, the mortals found their voices unheard. When calamity struck, they would be left to fend for themselves more and more often. When war broke out, they found their deities granting their boons, or interceding, less and less often. Mortals and 'Ascended' alike clashed with their own, be it on the battlefield, in the shadows, or in the chambers of debate. Hazuki was no stranger to these conflicts; finding himself embroiled in them, particularly those fought in the dark, all too often. Such strained their relationship with Nymia; who became fretful with worry over their safety and was forced to fend off many assailants who sought to harm Hazuki through her.   Many considered this to be a time of great darkness, but worse still would follow. As the centuries wound on and the divine debates grew more vitriolic, their capacity to attend their flocks dwindled severely. The mortal races grew uneasy. As time marched, however, unease turned into fear, fear turned into upset, upset into despondence, and despondence into hatred.   Hazuki was among those who strove to maintain a balance between attending to their mortal flock and contending with their fellow ascended. Such proved to be a near-impossible task, however. In spite of all their efforts, dissatisfaction mounted on every side. More and more members abandoned the council in favor of their own ambitions, whilst more and more mortals began to look upon their makers with scorn. Hazuki and their followers found themselves thrust into ever more frequent conflicts, which did little but aggravate matters. Centuries would pass, with little sign of improvement whilst the contempt of mortals grew. History appeared poised to repeat itself, and repeat itself it did.   The mortal races formed what was known as 'The Grand Host'.   With it, they marched upon the gods, deep into 'The Heart of The World', heralded by one who declared that they had seen through the lies of the divine and endured their attempts at removal. They would have the truth, or they would have blood. Fatigued though he was, Hazuki was not blind to the danger this host possessed; and as such, they dedicated themselves to brokering unity among a fractured council so they might placate their flocks before it was too late. They exhausted every piece of evidence, every line of reason, every tempered argument they could muster to get their siblings to cease in their debates and turn their eyes upon a far more pressing matter. They gave all they could, and they were not alone in such efforts; but in the end, there were those among their kind who were far too set in their ways to change now. Tempers flared among those within and without the council, and before long; 'The Ascended' came to blows, kinsmen turning on kinsmen in a bitter show of wickedness.   When 'The Grand Host' arrived, the lie was bared to them. The proof was found in the bloodied forms of the divines and the venomous words that had fallen from their lips during the host's descent. Whilst some would strive to spare their divine makers and seek answers away from the carnage, all too many were overtaken with outrage. In their fury, they descended upon their wounded makers, and slew all they could, wounding many whom they could not. Some of 'The Ascended' managed to abscond, but they were few and far between, soon driven into hiding by that which followed.   Both Hazuki and Nymia were among those who survived the carnage, but the same could not be said for Arshan. Amidst the bloodshed, Hazuki had fought tooth and nail to reach their brother only to be intercepted by a portion of 'The Grand Host', and a rival 'Ascended' with a bone left to pick despite their wounds. Though Hazuki was able to fend them off; and even bring low their fellow 'Ascended', they were too late to save Arshan. He was forced to watch as the fatal blow was struck, bringing low their brother as Dalla was carried away by those still faithful to her. The 'Lord of Moonlight' was then subjected to the abhorrent fate that befell The 'Ascended' upon their death. He was among the first to see 'The Spurned', as their kinsmen, Arshan included, were twisted and malformed by malevolent intent. One by one they rose again, culling 'The Grand Host' and infesting their bodies with their terrible essence. Hazuki, wounded and heartbroken, barely managed to flee from 'The Heart of The World' with their life.   Despondent and despairing; Hazuki withdrew far from 'The Heart of The World', and could not bring themselves to stand against their risen peerage. They were top-full of sorrow, and it drained them of what flagging resolve they had left. Grief overtook them, and they became reclusive, wallowing in their suffering whilst the world around them began to fall into ruin. They returned to 'The Silver Palace', an illustrious stronghold erected by their followers in his honor, and have seldom been seen from it since. Even now, when 'The Spurned' have decimated vast swathes of the world, they have not begun to mend. The wounds are all too great upon their heart.   Estranged and all but alone, trapped within a prison of the mind's making. This is the fate of the 'Night's Sentinel'. Blinded by their own suffering, unable to bear witness to the terror that befalls the world and its inhabitants.   Their situation is near hopeless...   But a forsaken flicker of it remains; and whilst it does, perhaps even those 'Ascended' may find salvation in these darkest of days.

Gender Identity

Hazuki identifies as a male individual. Their pronouns are He/Him/His, and they do not view their graceful nature as indicative of femininity.

Sexuality

Hazuki is heterosexual. They are attracted to individuals who present and identify as women.

Education

Much like the rest of 'The Ascended', Hazuki received a comprehensive education from both the 'Servitors' that raised them and 'The Demiurge' themselves. As a result, they were fully proficient in the use of advanced technology the 'Servitors' made use of, and the powers bestowed upon them by their maker. Hazuki was also possessive of a keener intellect than most of their kinsmen, and such was readily brought to bear in the pursuit of further education through trial and error. Astride 'Arshan', few could claim to have a greater understanding of the stellar flame and celestial motions, and none could claim to know the moon as he did.   It was also common knowledge that Hazuki shared a close bond with 'Arshan', particularly as they developed in their own fields of expertise. They would often welcome each other's insights, learning from their successes and failures alike. Just as the sun and moon were bound together, so too were their keepers. A reflection of their friendship, and later, brotherhood.

Employment

Throughout their life; 'Hazuki' has held a variety of positions as circumstances demanded. First among these was the role of the 'Servitor', where they diligently served their maker's will and advanced 'The Great Work' to the best of their emergent abilities. When 'The Demiurge' took interest in them, and brought them within their citadel, Hazuki would go on to become the keeper of their own invention: The Moon. Together with Arshan, they would go on to ensure its proper orbit, chasing the sun. From time to time, Hazuki returned to ensure this orbit was maintained, or otherwise to dwell there in peace and ruminate upon things that had since come to pass.   When the ties that bound them to 'The Demiurge' frayed, and their kindred stood scorned; Hazuki would be astride the vanguard of those who rebelled against their tyrannical parent. The indignities 'Vulca' and 'Dalla' suffered at the hands of their maker would not be left unchecked. Through the war, they unleashed the fury of the moon upon those who opposed them, dispatching their foes with unparalleled grace. Astride 'Arshan', they would be present at the final assault upon the 'The Heart of The World', and among those who confronted their maker directly.   After the fall of 'The Demiurge', Hazuki would join their kinsmen in the restoration of the world as they wished it to be. They tended to the moon, and where their eye was required, they would lend it, thus adopting the role of the 'Night's Sentinel'. Together, aside their bond-brother, 'Arshan', they ensured the night and day passed without disturbance, allowing their peers to work without interruption. Hazuki would join the council of 'Ascended' during the days of its formation, and their watchful eye would see the seats of their kindred assured whilst new races were seeded across the world. Many, regardless of their race, creed or origin, would come to respect and revere Hazuki, taking solace in the comfort his grace provided.   In the millenia that followed, they would remain as a watchful vigilant amidst the night; rooting out malevolence wherever it dwelled in the dark. Those who came to worship them would find guidance, comfort, and the vigilance to ward themselves from danger. Those who rooted out the evils in the shadow would find the leadership and resolve to withstand their cause. Alas, for all their efforts, Hazuki was not exempt from the contempt of the mortals. Whilst they would be among the few who retained a flock and survived the massacre perpetrated at the hand of 'The Grand Host', they would still receive their scars.   These scars wounded their heart gravely, and since then, they have withdrawn to their home within 'The Silver Palace', and their guidance has all but faded...   But whilst they yet live, perhaps they too can find salvation.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Throughout their life, Hazuki has achieved a multitude of commendable things, from the mundane to the mythical. From acts of legendary craftsmanship, to feats born from their supernatural vigilance, to displays of inspiring leadership when the times demanded it. Their deeds are myriad; but some of their more significant accomplishments can be found below. These include:   -Maintaining and presiding over the moon, its orbit, and alongside Arshan, ensuring the proper flow of day and night.   -Playing a part in the usurpation of 'The Demiurge'.   -Assisting in the reformation of the world as 'The Ascended' sought it to be.   -Aiding their fellow 'Ascended' in retelling the fall of 'The Demiurge' in such a way that it secured their seats among and above their mortal flocks. It should be noted, however, that their part in this matter was comparatively minor when compared to others. Whilst they understood the "necessity" of the act, it did not sit well with them.   -Aiding in the establishment of a council among 'The Ascended', so that they might better govern all they had created.   -Rooting out countless, malevolent forces amidst the darkness.   -Guiding a considerable flock through their gentle grace, and keen vigilance. This flock would go on to find a home in far-flung lands, where they might revere the moon and hone themselves in relative peace.   -Inspiring multiple leaders throughout history to rise to the occasion during times of crisis.   -The creation of 'The Silver Palace'.   -Surviving 'The Fall of The Old Makers'.

Failures & Embarrassments

Though their achievements are widely considered both admirable and awe-inspiring; one cannot speak of them without also addressing the failures and setbacks Hazuki has endured throughout their life. Some of the more poignant examples can be found below. These include:   -Withholding information from Arshan regarding the location of 'Vulca' and 'Dalla' when they betrayed 'The Great Work' until their brother's exasperation grew too dire to bear.   -Failing to reconcile with 'The Demiurge'.   -Being unable to provide the advice that would allow Arshan to broker and maintain peace between 'The Ascended' and 'The Demiurge'.   -Failing to prevent the massacre of the first 'Giants'.   -Failing to prevent Vulca's injury at the hand of 'The Demiurge'.   -Being forced to bring low their own parental figure.   -Finding themselves invested in disputes among their own kind.   -Engaging in warfare with former peers.   -Finding their eye distracted from their flock by evils within the dark, leading to the suffering of their followers.   -Being unable to defend Arshan, who perished at the hand of 'The Grand Host'.   -Surviving 'The Fall of The Old Makers', and thus having to bear the great guilt such imparts.   -Withdrawing to 'The Silver Palace', and becoming reclusive to their remaining followers whilst 'The Spurned' bring ruin to the world.

Mental Trauma

No matter how vigilant, graceful, or resolved an individual could hope to be, one does not endure all that Hazuki has without it inflicting wounds upon the mind. Even when they have faded into scars, these marks still take their toll upon the 'Lord of Moonlight'. None could deny the vigilance of Hazuki; but as the millennia wound on, the burden of such became increasingly apparent. As the machinations of their foes grew ever more sinister, so too did the burden of rooting these malefactors out grow heavier. The lines between watchfulness and paranoia began to blur, and true clarity has yet to return to Hazuki since it began to fade.   Perhaps it was this marred vision, coupled with the increasing demand for his eye in the dark, that led to the suffering of their flock going unanswered when they sought them most. The cost for their straying eye was dire. Countless members of their kin were slain by 'The Grand Host', and among them was Arshan. The wound this struck upon Hazuki's heart was debilitating. As a direct result of this butchery, and the monsters that rose from it, the 'Lord of Moonlight' has since withdrawn within the safety of their domain. There they have remained, wallowing in guilt, grief, and despondence. They have become a recluse by all accounts, seldom heeding the pleas of their flock; and even when they do, the counsel they offer is a far cry from the guidance they bestowed in their prime.   Their burdens are great; but for Hazuki, hope remains in the form of those 'Forsaken'.

Intellectual Characteristics

Hazuki was possessive of a keen mind, sharpened and perceptive in its nature. They were by no means a dullard, even if there were other 'Ascended' who possessed a greater, academic intellect. He would be among the first to discern unusual details when faced with a conundrum and often noted things that others might well have overlooked. It is this talent that allows them to navigate their trials and tribulations with greater insight than most, and subsequently influences the guidance they may come to impart to those who seek it. He was renowned for their graceful nature and tempered disposition. Many would come to admire the 'Lord of Moonlight' because of their ability to remain composed even when under duress. This poise would prove instrumental in many of their inquests into matters malevolent.

Morality & Philosophy

Hazuki's morality is generally considered benevolent, and their philosophical outlook reflects such. For the most part, Hazuki believed in making informed choices, and inspiring others to do the same. To be vigilant stood only to benefit the individual and their community. They were also a fervent believer in guiding those who stray back onto the right path, and it was the responsibility of those who led to stay the course for the sake of their followers. Many would come to admire and follow in the footsteps of this ideology, much of which would form the hallmarks of the faith surrounding Hazuki.   It should be noted, however, that Hazuki also admired those who could retain their poise and temper themselves even when under pressure or assailed by powerful emotions. They knew well the strength such things could provide, but also the ruin they could evoke if not properly tempered by a sharpened mind, and a sturdy will.   Some would go on to consider this ironic, given the relentless zeal Hazuki and their most loyal followers applied to rooting out what they considered evil.

Taboos

Hazuki disdained much that Arshan did. Disloyalty, falsehood, and undue cruelty were chief among that which he considered taboo. The dark of night and places steeped in gloom often played host to abhorrent malefactors, and Hazuki would not abide them. Those who led others astray were worthy of his contempt, and those who practiced malevolence in those shadows were to be rooted out and their plans undone. For some, Hazuki's distaste towards undue cruelty was considered ironic. For them, the zeal in which he and the agents of his will hounded them could have been considered seemed steeped in the very sentiment he claimed to abhor. The 'Night's Sentinel' cared little for their disposition on the matter, however.   Hazuki also abhorred leaders who cared not for their station or their people. Those who served only themselves despite the responsibilities of such a position would be swift to find themselves disliked by the 'Lord of Moonlight'.   Another, more personal taboo, was that Hazuki thought ill of those who spoke poorly of Arshan. Whilst they could sometimes understand the disdain some held towards their bond-brother; they would not forsake their side. Following the death of the 'Dawn-Warden', this disposition has waivered, supplanted by despondent yearning for a brother lost. They could not hope to deny the suffering Arshan now inflicts, twisted as they are.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Hazuki's motivations were more complex before 'The Spurned' began their ruinous march upon the world and its mortal inhabitance. Since then, they have become somewhat plainer. They are as follows:   -To safeguard the moon and its proper orbit.   -To make peace with their bond-brother's demise.   -To grieve until their heart is closed to the pain of their loss.   -To reconcile with their beloved, Nymia.   -To defend their flock, should their heart find the will to do so once more.   -To make peace with the necessity that their former kinsmen must fall in order for this world to know salvation.   -To aid in the above, should such come to pass.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Hazuki, much like their fellow 'Ascended', is an individual with a host of proficiencies they could bring to bear as the situation demanded. From martial combat and tactics, to the necessities that a leader must possess, the manipulation of the moon's power through to a competent understanding of the tides and how the moon influences their ebb and flow. By all accounts, they were most fit for their station; and what they may have lacked in certain areas, they made up for through their strengths. Their tempered and vigilant nature did much to keep them aware of their own flaws, even if they could not always do much to amend them.   Alas, no being is without ineptitudes, and Hazuki is no exception. First among these is the reality that Hazuki is, and has always been, a terrible liar. They are far more proficient in with-holding truth than creating falsehoods. In fact, by and large, they abhor the creation of such things, particularly because they are often employed by the very malefactors they contest in the dark.   Hazuki also holds no proficiency with the use of shields. Their capacity for combat lies in their divine powers, and the sword. They have never taken up such a defensive implement and would find little use from it. Their style of combat ill-suits such a thing, unlike their bond-brother, Arshan, who excelled in the usage of such.   In addition, Hazuki, though understanding the workings of the sun, had no means by which they could influence its stellar flame, just as Arshan had no means by which they could call upon the moon's pale grace. Furthermore, where the moon's light found no purchase, they would find their powers diminished. Lunar incantations are at their strongest where the moon lies high in the heavens. For example, lunar magics would be diminished in locations where the sun rest at its zenith, and vice versa. Curiously, during a Solar Eclipse, the strength of Lunar Magic can be wielded to its fullest extent even during the day.   Whilst they know more than some of 'The Ascended' by virtue of their inquisitions into the dark places of this world, their knowledge is still lacking compared to those who have dwelled their all their lives. The 'Lord of Moonlight' is as vigilant as he is relentless, but he is not beyond being outmaneuvered and outsmarted in territories unfamiliar to him. This has come to pass on more than one occasion, no doubt seeding the beginnings of paranoia within him.   Finally, whilst they have a love for it; Hazuki holds no inherent musical talent, nor do they play any instruments.

Likes & Dislikes

Hazuki holds a particular affinity towards the following:   -Those with the capacity to guide others well.   -Vigilance.   -Grace.   -Sewing.   -Music.   -His memory of Arshan.   -Nymia.   -Poetry.   -Gentle companionship.   -Artistry.   -The moon.   Hazuki regards the following with particular disdain:   -Deception.   -Unnecessary bloodshed.   -Weak-willed leadership.   -Demons.   -Deep-dwellers.   -'The Grand Host'.   -'The Spurned'.   -'The Pale Conqueror'.   -Undue cruelty.   -Unnatural entities.   -Unnatural shadows.   -Uncouth behavior.   -Themselves, to some degree.

Virtues & Personality perks

Hazuki's virtues lie steeped in temperance, grace, civility, and vigilance. They held compassion for many, though it was displayed in far more subtle manners than others would have employed. This sentiment is true of many things regarding the 'Lord of Moonlight'. Seldom would his demeanor become unfettered. Their vigilant eye was swift to notice things that others would not, both within and without, and their elegant disposition would endear the hearts and minds of many. Much like their bond-brother, Hazuki viewed kindness and loyalty highly, and viewed them as some of the hallmarks of a strong leader.    Much like many of their kinsmen, the virtues of the 'Night's Sentinel' were formidable, but following the rise of 'The Spurned', many of them have been diminished. Ennui, grief and lethargy have all but ousted these traits from their thrones, and his faithful flock suffers for it.   One can only hope they find the chance to make peace with their losses, and find their resolve once more.

Vices & Personality flaws

Despite their tempered nature; Hazuki was assured of their beliefs to the point of being considered stubborn. Whilst they had tolerance for much, once an individual crossed the proverbial line into reprehensibility, they would be dubbed as little more than a malefactor. Their relentless pursuit of foes that dwell within the shadows has been considered narrow-minded and unduly cruel by some. These detractors are often victims of Hazuki's fervor, however. It could be considered irony, given their distaste for undue cruelty.   Another of Hazuki's flaws is born from their vigilant nature. As the burdens of their station grew heavier, and defeats mounted, they redoubled their efforts in such a regard, continuing to hone their already formidable talent. Alas, in so doing, their eyes were opened to fresh dangers that lurked in the darkness. As matters grew more dire, their vigilance began to blur with paranoia. This was then exploited by their foes, which in turn, incited greater paranoia. A vicious cycle. Even now, reclusive as they are, the clarity they once had has yet to return.   In recent years, the death of 'Arshan' and many of Hazuki's kinsmen weighs heavily upon them. The grief that stabs their heart has diminished many of their virtues. They have become reclusive and despondent in their nature. Seldom do they heed the prayers of their followers, and even when they do, the guidance they bestow has since been diminished. He is destined to wither away in sorrow until 'The Spurned' find him unless their circumstances can be changed.

Personality Quirks

Hazuki was known to find the art of sewing therapeutic. It calmed them, and during times of duress, they would be sure to create new garments or decorations in order to curtail wanton thoughts. This "quirk" persists even to this day, though much of what they have made reflects their dour disposition. Gone is the inherent beauty of their garments, replaced instead by unsettling, and sorrowful designs.   They often created such things for Nymia, even going so far as to learn how to craft entirely new pieces of attire to suit her fancies. Now, however, even these gifts, rare as they are, reflect the sorrow that festers in the heart of the 'Lord of Moonlight'.

Hygiene

Hazuki was meticulous about matters of hygiene, being sure to bathe regularly and cleanse themselves of the grime borne from their hardships. Cleanliness was of great import to them, for it contributed to what they perceived as their image of grace. It was not unheard of them to share the company of Nymia amidst pristine lakes illuminated only by the light of the moon. Together they would reminisce and dwell upon the days to come, tending to one another with all due grace and compassion.   Hazuki was known to wash and attend to the hair of their beloved following occasions, and they would share private discourse with one another during such exchanges.

Social

Reign

Whilst Hazuki's reign has not yet ended, it is a shadow of its former self. In the days of yore; Hazuki was regarded by most mortals as a benevolent guide and a vigilant guardian. He did not lead their followers directly, but they would impart wisdom to those they chose as leaders in the hopes that it would aid them in their duty. He did not wish to insert themselves directly where it was not required.    Among their fellow 'Ascended', however, Hazuki has a more divisive reputation. Whilst they played their part in the founding of the council and were generally respected by those loyal to it, there were those who found their watchful eye all too intrusive. When Hazuki intervened in the pursuit of rooting out what they considered malevolent, this disposition only intensified. The faltering of the council did not help them, either. These conflicts in the dark would punctuate much of their reign, affecting both 'Ascended' and mortal alike.   Nonetheless, Hazuki still had ample companions among their own kin, and those they watched over. Arshan, Dalla, Nymia, and Vulca all looked upon the 'Lord of Moonlight' favorably, as do the majority of their mortal flock. Even after 'The Fall of The Old Makers', this holds true for those who survived.   Alas; Hazuki cannot find it in themselves to embrace this truth. Now, as the world falls to ruin, and those they defended to the hilt in life now bring calamity beyond death, Hazuki has since withdrawn to 'The Silver Palace'. Seldom do they emerge, and even when they do; the once tempered and righteous figure so many looked up to has become thoroughly diminished. Arshan, and many of their fellow peers, are slain and have since been risen. No longer can Hazuki find solace in their counsel. Nymia, their beloved, cannot reach them for all their trying. Their flock seeks deliverance from a sullen divine who seldom has the strength to answer them.   If they cannot be permitted to heal, they stand only to wane further, for theirs is a dour fate; the burden borne by those 'Ascended' who survived the massacre perpetrated by 'The Grand Host'.

Contacts & Relations

Though he was not as well connected as some of their peers, Hazuki still retained a welcome circle of contacts and companions prior to 'The Fall of The Old Makers'. The 'Lord of Moonlight' found peers in both his fellow 'Ascended' and the mortal races alike, from the most humble of wanderers to some of the greatest among their kinsmen. Two of their most influential relations lay with Arshan, keeper of the sun and their trusted bond-brother, and Nymia, their beloved, who presided over all that water touched, from sea to spring. Often, he would seek their counsel during times of duress; and found great comfort in the advice they gave. Second only to these closest bonds were Vulca and Dalla. Each could be considered a close friend to Hazuki, especially given their willingness to withhold truth on their behalf when they defied 'The Demiurge'. Hazuki pitied Vulca for all they had suffered, and in some measure regretted that they were forced to endure such, but they did not lament this matter to the same extent as Arshan did.   Hazuki would also break bread with mortal individuals from all walks of life. From humble tailors to storied warriors, to righteous rulers, and ought else in between. The bonds he kept with them were no less treasured, even if they were comparably ephemeral. Hazuki, unlike some of their kin, made their peace with this swiftly. The finite nature of these beings encouraged him only to make the most of the present, rather than fearing for the end that would invariably come for them.   The same could not be said of them when their kin was slain, however. The wounds this wrought upon Hazuki's heart were grave, and served as the primary catalyst for their withdrawal to 'The Silver Palace'. Since then, their remaining relations have become estranged and difficult to maintain, and the prospect of cultivating new bonds is seldom considered by them as they wallow in their despondence.

Family Ties

Much like the rest of 'The Ascended', Hazuki would come to consider their kinsmen as a form of found family, with 'The Demiurge' acting as their parental figure prior to their usurpation. Their blood family was long dead by the time 'The Demiurge' fell, a common reality to 'The Ascended'. In such a way, they have no "true" familial ties left. As for their found family? Many of them have since perished and risen again as 'The Spurned', much to the despair of Hazuki. In their twisted state, they can be considered the family they once were no longer, nor would they care for such bonds anyhow.   Thus Hazuki, akin to the rest who survived the massacre purpetrated by 'The Grand Host', is almost entirely devoid of familial ties.

Religious Views

Hazuki knew of the existence of the Divine Spark, the solace mortals found in seeking comfort from a higher power, and the value of tenets and disciplines guiding one's path through life. Though they partook in the latter, Hazuki did not consider themselves to be religious. Rather, they saw themselves as an example for the mortal races to follow. It would be mortals that would come to form a religion around him; though 'The Ascended' certainly laid down the foundations for such through their retelling of history. This is something that Hazuki still does not overly approve of; even though he inevitably took part in it.

Social Aptitude

Whilst not the boldest or outgoing of 'The Ascended', Hazuki retained more than a sufficient measure of social aptitude. Where others were naturally confident or capable of holding the crowd's attention, Hazuki's capacity to navigate social situations stems from their vigilance and their tempered nature. He was more than capable of holding their own in even testing circumstances, and was renowned for being difficult to garner a rise from. Even those they held in contempt were seldom greeted with unfettered emotion on his part.   Alas; since the rise of 'The Spurned', both their social aptitude and capacity for restraint have waivered considerably. Their grief and sorrow have robbed them of much which once gave them strength in such regards.

Mannerisms

Hazuki's mannerisms exude grace, discipline, and temperance. Save for the rare occasions in which their emotions got the better of them, they would move with elegance and control. Their gestures are often flowing, but precise; though when a point needs to be made, they have a tendency to adopt very swift, sharp motions; cutting through the thick of things to reach the heart of the matter. Their voice and tone often reflect this precedent. There is a gentleness to them, but never at the expense of their potential for swift, and zealous action as required. Rare are the days in which Hazuki speaks out of turn, but when they do, it is seldom without reason.   In recent years, however; much of their grace has waned. The sorrow that burdens their heart has led them to become more languid in their mannerisms, lacking the poise that was once second nature to them. This is also reflected in their voice, which has become quiet and dour in its tone, as opposed to the refined and comforting timbre it used to hold.

Hobbies & Pets

Though Hazuki had much to occupy them as far as duties were concerned; they still found a spare moment here and there to indulge in their varying hobbies. Often, Hazuki would take to sewing as their preferred past-time. They found the craft deeply therapeutic, and much of their thoughts and feelings were sewn into the garments they created. Much of the art that is present on such legendary pieces of attire reflects much of their being at the time of their creation.   When they were not sewing, Hazuki would write poetry either for himself, or those they cared for. These poems varied greatly in their contents, from historic events, to admiration for beautiful landscapes, to influential events in the lives of himself or others, and far more besides. To those they treasure most, they impart personalized poems dedicated to those individuals. Few of such poems have been created by the 'Lord of Moonlight', and those who have received them hold them close to their heart.   Should neither activity garner their interest, they often partake in partial practice, meditation, and wandering through the gardens of 'The Silver Palace'. These hobbies suffice for the 'Night's Sentinel'.   As of late, however, much of their desire to partake in these hobbies has diminished. When they do; the results are often far from what they desire.   Where pets are concerned; Hazuki has only one. A hawk and close companioned named 'Miru'. This watchful, divine agent scours the lands, serving their master's vigil with relentless dedication.

Speech

For the most part, Hazuki has a soft-spoken baritone voice. They are gentle in their speech, holding the same elegance in their voice as they do in their movement. Many would come to take comfort in their voice, but all this does not discredit their capacity to be sharp, commanding, and even intimidating when the circumstances require it. Seldom does Hazuki feel the need to raise their voice or bark orders when off the field of battle, but there have been enough occasions to lend credence to their capacity for a more direct approach.

Wealth & Financial state

As one of 'The Ascended', Hazuki has little need for wealth as the mortal races would describe it. Whilst they were certainly a rich individual by such metrics, due in no small part to the benefaction of their worshippers, they preferred to define their affluence through more abstract measures. The contentment of their followers, their own well-being, the friendships they maintained, the integrity they strove to uphold, and so on. In keeping such things in good steading, they considered themselves prosperous. What followed from such, be it adoration, gifts, shrines built in their name, or ought else besides, was merely a welcome bonus. A bonus Hazuki surely appreciated, all things considered.   Would that they could have maintained such wealth even now; perhaps things would have been different.
