'The Ascended' (English (UK): [əˈsɛndɪd])

"To think that with all our power, all our potential, it would come to this once again. Usurpation. Alas, it matters not now; the age of our making has since passed, and those of us who remain are powerless to stop the doom born from its end."

Created by Tybris (Me)
The children of 'The Demiurge'; 'Servitors' hand-picked for their unique talents and the rare gift of individuality and bestowed immense power in order to shape the world to the specifications of their benefactor. That was the fate assigned to them. It was not the destiny they carved for themselves. When the ties that bound them frayed and finally snapped; they carved their own place in the world through bloodshed and upheaval, usurping the figure that had imparted them with their strength. From the ashes of their revolt, they rebuilt the world as they wished it to be.   Proclaimed by their own creations, the mortal races, as eternal and invulnerable entities, shepherds, and guardians; these supremely powerful figures would go on to preside over their world and the flocks they had cultivated within it. Their benevolence ensured a time of unmatched greatness for the mortal races. When the seas grew too fierce, they were calmed by 'The Ascended'. When the fields lay barren, fresh nourishment was gifted by 'The Ascended'. When the fires of the earth threatened to drown nations in magma; it was 'The Ascended' who calmed their spirits. But such things are not to last.   For the sins of one's progenitor are not so easily shaken, and the strife of siblings blessed with near divinity would prove catastrophic. Their eyes were set upon each other and the great 'questions' they must answer. Solving who would rule who, if rulership was to be their right at all should those of more dour disposition should still hold their thrones despite their domains. A plethora of quandaries that took their attention from the mortal world. War, famine, crises, and contempt followed in the wake of their disputes; and whilst they raged, the world suffered for it in their absence. Had they but heard the pleas of their flocks and found a compromise, then perhaps the calamity which has befallen the world would have been avoided.   But for all the kindness some offered; the cycle continued. Blood was spilled in 'The Heart of The World', and from the cadavers of the cast-out divines stood 'The Spurned'. By their decree, the end of all things began.   Now but a few of 'The Ascended' remain, either reeling from decades-old injuries, or well hidden, content to observe and play their part from the shadows whilst the world falls to ruin; a threat far too strong for they alone to face.   Now it falls to their 'Forsaken' children to undo this calamitous affliction, and send them to their final rest before it is too late.

Basic Information

Anatomy

The anatomy and morphology of any given 'Ascended' varies considerably. There are those who look to be an almost perfect rendition of the races they created, to others who are more abstract in their nature, yet still vaguely humanoid. There are those who were bestial in shape and those who seemed beyond such things altogether, shifting and forming as they pleased. There is no truly concrete set of specifications for 'The Ascended' in this regard, just as there is little to be offered in the same way for 'The Spurned'.

Biological Traits

The biological traits of any given 'Ascended' vary considerably. The few constants that do remain are minor in comparison to the variety of forms, faculties, and skills that each individual possesses. They are immortal, but not invulnerable. Each has a potent grasp over magic and otherwordly forces and so on. The rest is largely dependent on their personal influence over their form. Some are unnaturally strong, others possessive of impossibly sharp minds. Some have the dexterity of a panther, others the charisma of a siren. It all depends upon their preferences, and the necessities that come with the domains they preside over.

Genetics and Reproduction

Whilst 'The Ascended' are capable of carnal acts, should they feel the desire to involve themselves; they are not capable of producing other 'Ascended' even with their considerable power. Any child born between a union of two 'Ascended' will give rise to a 'Servitor', with no true guarantee of them being an 'individual' as they were. To that end, the chances of 'Ascended' conceiving children between one another are slim. They are more likely to appoint a mortal to be their 'surrogate' if they so desired. Even this has its difficulties, however. If they were to lay with one of their own creations, their offspring would be of the mortal partner's race, albeit bolder and stronger than their average counterpart. The closest thing to a true measure of 'reproduction' would be to impart a measure of their own power and spark unto a mortal, effectively elevating them to a status of demi-godhood. This has seldom occurred in all of history, however. It's a rarity for the 'Ascended' to produce offspring as their mortal creations would, let alone anointing one with such power. This all being said, the appetites and nuances of the matter will depend upon the race of their partner and the role 'The Ascended' played in the matter. Conceiving a child with a 'Giant' will have a far longer gestation period than having one with a 'Halfling' for example.   As far as compatibility is concerned; 'The Ascended' are capable of adjusting themselves to suit whatever partner they presently have to hand, be it through subtler influence and manipulation of their partner's capacity, or polymorphing aspects of themselves as appropriate. The divine are wont to do as they please, after all.

Growth Rate & Stages

Given that 'The Ascended' all developed from 'Servitors', they share the growth patterns of their former race. Quick to grow, quick to mature, to ensure they could aid in their former benefactor's plans. When they were chosen to become 'The Ascended' they were bestowed with vast power, granting them immortality among other things. Over time, they would diversify their appearances and forms to be both functional and tailored to their own individual preferences. Once content, they would remain in these forms, shifting only when whimsy or necessity demanded. Immortality removed the need for further stages of development or recession born out of a natural cycle.

Ecology and Habitats

Whilst each individual member of 'The Ascended' had, or has, their own preferences for habitats and locales, they are functionally capable of existing anywhere in the world. Whether or not it will be to their liking however is another matter entirely. The interaction they hold with different environments is as varied as it is vast. Some will merely dwell, others will take pains to interact with it all in a more proactive fashion.

Dietary Needs and Habits

'The Ascended' are capable of consuming most things as a form of sustenance, and it will satisfy them. From the finest foods to the worst of slops. Such is, largely speaking, a triviality to them though. They derive greater sustenance from supping on the essence of the world. Even then, they can go long enough between 'feedings' that they do not endanger the world, presuming they do not become a glutton, with their appetites. Theoretically, however, an 'Ascended' could live comfortably off of conventional foodstuffs just as a mortal would, though it would take them considerably longer to recover their energy due to the vast disparity in power and capacity between them and their creations, more often than not. Alas, the same cannot be said for 'The Spurned' that many of them have become.

Biological Cycle

As 'The Ascended' are immortal beings, they do not shift in any major capacity, mostly speaking, with the passage of time and the shifting of the seasons. There are some outliers and unique cases, of course, though these often depend on the domain the individual holds authority over; or their own personal preferences. For example, an 'Ascended' that took the form of a great bear may find themselves wishing to hibernate whilst they remain in that form.

Additional Information

Social Structure

The social structure between 'The Ascended' is something of a topic of debate. Among many of their kind, they would consider themselves to have once been a family, of a sort; or at the very least a collective of close friends and colleagues. There are outliers, however, who believe their relationship with their kin to be far more transactional. Division grew between many among their number before their fall, however; and the few that do remain are reclusive and seldom, if ever communicate whilst their ruined kindred walk the world as 'The Spurned'. These same sentiments could be considered when regarding how 'The Ascended' viewed their mortal flocks. Some considered them theirs to protect, others that they were to be guided with a gentle hand. There were those who sought to rule their creations and others who viewed them as little more than toys to serve their whims. The perspectives vary, but in the end, it mattered little. Their doom befell them at the hands of their own, resentful children.

Domestication

One does not domesticate 'The Ascended'.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

The uses of an 'Ascended' are varied but considerable; if one can manipulate or persuade them into assisting your cause; willingly, or otherwise. Though their power is nigh immeasurable, they are still constrained by very mortal considerations; and though the scope through which they regard the world is far larger, it is still capable of adjustment in accordance with your point of view. To that end, it is possible to 'exploit' one of the few remaining 'Ascended', yes.

Facial characteristics

The facial characteristics of 'The Ascended' vary considerably based on which 'Ascended' you look upon in particular. There will be those who will mimic the nature of mortal races, those who do the same but with the characteristics of beasts, and others who may be devoid of a face entirely. Some will have multiple sets of a certain feature, others with multiple faces altogether. It all varies based on the preference and present form of any given 'Ascended'.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Once, 'The Ascended' would have been found all across the world and even beyond it, resting within domains of their own making. Now the few that remain hide in the furthest corners of the world or within their own bastions, licking grievous wounds or biding their time in secret whilst the twisted husks of former siblings bring desolation to the world they once helped to create.

Average Intelligence

The average intelligence of 'The Ascended' varies vastly from individual to individual. There are those with intellect so vast they could rival 'The Demiurge' had they more time to study, and then there are those who, whilst considerably sharper than the average mortal, are considered dullards by their own kin and siblings alike. Naturally, it is a spectrum from either end, and the varying 'Ascended' all find themselves somewhere upon it.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

The senses and perception of any given 'Ascended' vary greatly, particularly based on their own domains. There are some whose conventional senses are almost tangibly mortal, others who have the aspects of the beasts they created; others whose perception transcends what is considered natural. All 'Ascended' have a potent connection and understanding towards magic and such arts, particularly towards that which stands relevant within their own sphere of influence. An 'Ascended' whose domain presides of nature will have a vastly more comprehensive understanding of the natural order and how magic might influence it compared to an 'Ascended' whose domain lay in the realms of war, for example. Some are capable of telepathy, others not. It all varies greatly from individual to individual.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Some among 'The Ascended' may choose to have symbiotic races or servants that work in tandem with them, harmoniously, there are others who have specifically crafted thralls and agents to exact their will in a more one-sided relationship. It all depends on the individual. There is an argument to be made that the mortal races could have been considered 'parasitic' towards 'The Ascended', but to claim that their creations were so is something of a fragile argument to make. Perhaps their bond was once symbiotic, but now such things, by and large, have been upheaved and thrown into disarray and despair. 'The Spurned' made for poor replacements.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Originally, 'The Ascended' would have held specific names based upon their roles as 'Servitors'. After their ascension, many took new names based on individual preference; giving life to new languages, words, and much more besides. After the usurpation of 'The Demiurge', their names would come to grow and become decorated with fresh titles and terms either decided by themselves or bestowed by the mortals they created. In the end, there is very little in the way of 'tradition' among the naming of 'The Ascended', but through their unique and personal developments, a wealth of linguistic culture would disseminate to and evolve among the mortal races. When many fell and became twisted into 'The Spurned', they found new names and titles thrust upon them by their fearful creations, now frantically striving to stand against the evil that marched upon them.   In brief terms; 'The Ascended' chose names for themselves as they pleased, and bid the world accept them as such. When they came to preside over their flocks, their names grew ever more auspicious. When they fell, new names were thrust upon them, often reflective of their twisted selves.

Major Organizations

Among 'The Ascended' themselves, there are no major organizations any longer. Prior to their fall, many of 'The Ascended' were part of various groups and councils that strove to discern how best to preside over the world and the mortal flocks that roamed upon it. Towards the end of their reign, many of these factions would clash in heated debates, arguments, and eventually violence. Now, after 'The Fall of The Old Makers', the few 'Ascended' who do remain are divided and scattered to the winds.   Those who have been turned into 'The Spurned' now find themselves at the head of 'The Black March', bringing ruin to the world they once remade to their liking.   It should be noted, however, that many religious organizations among the mortal races are dedicated to various 'Ascended', living or otherwise.

Beauty Ideals

What 'The Ascended' consider to be beautiful depends entirely on the individual in question. The variety of opinions on this topic is considerable.

Gender Ideals

Gender is a fluid concept to many of 'The Ascended'. Whilst they are not genderless as 'The Demiurge' was, they are capable of adjusting themselves to better suit their preferences. To that end, gender has very little in the way of 'concrete' attributes of ideals attached to it by their kind. They exist as they wish to; and admire certain traits, physical, mental or spiritual, that appeal to them on a more personal level. An 'Ascended' who considers herself to be typically matronly and mother-like may appear and consider themselves what mortals would consider as 'female', whereas if a particular 'Ascended' admired conventional masculinity to a high degree, they may choose to consider themselves what mortals would consider as 'male'. There are those who will sit comfortably in their chosen gender, and others who will shift or flow across a spectrum as they please. The depictions mortals have of the varying 'Ascended' are often a good inclination as to what they perceived themselves as and were thus perceived as by their flocks.   As a final note. To the 'Ascended', gender holds very little bearing on one's worth. Beyond superficial dispositions and preferences, attitudes and actions are the measures of one's worth in their eyes, not the shape of one's form or the perception of one's self in this regard. Would that the same could be said for some of their creations...

Courtship Ideals

Courtship ideals will vary vastly depending on the dispositions of 'The Ascended' in question. There will be those who exonerate the sentiment of long-term, budding relationships built over all manner of events and occasions, those who throw such ideals to the wind in favor of fast and passionate relationships, those who seek a balance between such extremes, and those who want nothing to do with courtship and what it may entail altogether. It all falls down to personal preference.

Relationship Ideals

The perception 'The Ascended' hold towards relationships depends considerably based on which 'Ascended' you refer to. There will be those who wish only for platonic bonds, others who are deeply romantic, those who are rampant hedonists and those who abstain from all such vices and pleasures. There will be those who are strictly monogamous, and those who are openly polyamorous, and everything else inbetween. The dispositions of the divine are as varied as they are.

Average Technological Level

As beings of immense power and intellect, 'The Ascended' held a technological level far more advanced than many of their creations. Their precursor knowledge and understanding is a primary contributor to this fact; their abilities towering above even the most advanced and scholarly of the mortal races and their civilizations. Alas, for all their advancement, they could not withstand the fury of their vengeful creations.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

By virtue of the divine spark imparted to them by 'The Demiurge', 'The Ascended' are capable of understanding all languages and translating themselves appropriately. They are capable of speaking all mortal languages, for they no doubt had a hand in their creation; even if the mortal races went on to develop them on their own from generation to generation. It should be noted, however, that though 'The Ascended' can understand all languages, the same cannot be said for their creations. They must learn them through toil and perseverance. Some would argue this was a deliberate choice born from rivalries between 'Ascended'.

Common Taboos

What one member of 'The Ascended' considers taboo, another will consider natural. There will be those whose actions would be abhorrent by many, who in turn consider their peerage to be befouling for their actions. As with most things regarding 'The Ascended', it will depend upon the individual.   One thing, however, considered taboo by the vast majority is the notion that a mortal should not be permitted to harm an 'Ascended'. If such were shown in the public eye; it would ravage the elaborate perception of invulnerability they maintain.   Thus their own demise, carved out by their own creations, would be considered taboo by the vast majority of 'The Ascended'. That much is certain, though only their twisted echoes and hidden kin remain to hold an opinion on the matter.

History

The history of 'The Ascended' is tied both to the world they helped create, 'The Demiurge' that granted them their gift, and the mortal races who brought them low in spite. It is a long tale, one that defines much of how the world came to be as it is now. Their story begins through the benefaction of 'The Demiurge'.   During the creation of the world; 'The Demiurge', a true God, found their great work to be lacking "heart". It had taken them eons to create the refined world they looked upon, aided by a race of orderly, steadfast entities known as 'Servitors'. Each had a specific purpose, designed with the intention of fulfilling a specific task for the betterment of the work as a whole. The vast majority of these entities performed their tasks within a strict set of parameters, ensuring a great deal of efficiency, diligence, and loyalty, at the expense of innovation, ingenuity, and true individuality. Had the design been devoid of all flaws, every single 'Servitor' would have functioned within the confines of their orders without a qualm. That is not to say they would have been content by the results of their work, however. Far from it, in fact. To see the frustration of their maker was a harsh burden to uphold even as they persisted, and in time, even the most indifferent of their kind began to find the world to be 'dull'.   Perhaps it was a fortuitous twist of fate that even the works of Gods are not perfect. As the centuries wound on, "imperfections" in the design of some 'Servitors' became apparent. They expressed ingenuitive solutions to problems they faced, becoming capable of versatile problem solving and creative potential. Each of these anomalous 'Servitors' displayed unique dispositions and preferences towards how they solved problems or created that which was needed to continue the great work. They, unlike their peerage, displayed the beginnings of individuality and free thought. Though they were few and far between, this discovery had the potential to de-stabilize the great work 'The Demiurge' had spent so long creating. It was a cause for great concern, and to simply remove these deviant elements from the whole might well have "solved" the matter, but it would have brought them no closer to finding the "soul" of their work.   It was this revelation, coupled with the belief that they could successfully control these individuals that led them to offer them a pact. 'The Demiurge' would offer a measure of their divine spark to them, permitting them to create and preside over specific domains and aspects of the great work so long as they remained within a strict set of parameters, such that the dream of 'The Demiurge' would not face erasure or be wrest from their control. These terms were accepted, and despite the concerns of some quiet voices among their former kin, these deviant 'Servitors' became 'The Ascended'. Ordained with sacred purpose, they set about their work with fresh enthusiasm, and the results were undeniably successful. Even the most reserved of 'Servitors' could not deny the joy they felt as the world seemed to flourish as a result of their joint efforts.     Alas, great though this initial success was, it was not to last forever.    As their individuality and capacity for invention grew, 'The Ascended' would begin to strain against the constraints that bound them. What would start as polite requests for them to cease would soon devolve into heated arguments and increased restraints. It would be the inability to recognize the agency of those 'The Demiurge' had come to regard as their children that would prove to be their downfall. When the crafter, one of 'The Ascended', approached their benefactor with the design for another race of sentient beings, they were denied. Dissatisfied and disillusioned, they gave life to the race in secret. For a time, they were able to conceal the 'Giants' they had given life to; but inevitably, 'The Demiurge' found them. A massacre occurred, as all but one of the first 'Giants' were slain, and the crafter wounded by their own guardian in a desperate attempt to shield the last of their creations. Sharp words were thrust upon 'The Ascended', as a guilt-ridden 'Demiurge' fled quit the field, decrying their freedom as a mistake.   It was this that severed the ties that bound.   Word spread quickly, and the news of what had come to pass; and what had befallen the crafter incensed their kin. For a time they hid away; but the seeds of rebellion had been planted, and when they bloomed; the result was ruinous. The world as they knew it was unmade, the 'Servitors' brought low as they were thrust against their former kindred who marched against 'The Demiurge'. The great work was overturned as they scoured the world as far as its very 'Heart'. It was there that they found the 'Demiurge', all too aware of their imminent defeat, concluding the creation of 'The Sigil'. A binding curse that would afflict the creations of 'The Ascended' when the time was right, and they fell prey to their own wickedness; wickedness 'The Demiurge' saw in themselves.   A clash erupted between guardian and children; resulting in 'The Demiurge' being brought low, stripped of their power, and imprisoned within the deepest vaults of their own citadel. Their legacy was stolen, their thrown usurped, and as their children emerged from the battle-scarred citadel they looked upon the ruined world and vowed to remake it as they saw fit.   Thus, the world as it is known today came to be.   The lands shifted, the seas filled anew. The 'Giants' would become the first race to walk this new world in commemoration of those who had been lost. In time, many other races would come to roam the world; watched over by their makers. Revered by their children, 'The Ascended' would come to be known as 'The Old Makers' for all they had established. As far as their creations were concerned, they were the one rulers and true creators of the world; all-powerful and invulnerable. By their hand, the world knew peace, harmony, and greatness unmatched. The mortal races would not want for anything. They would know plenty, harmony, and security. This served only to aid the ruse 'The Ascended', by majority, painted about themselves. Stood together, they ensured their creations basked in the comfort of a utopian existence.   But such unity could not hope to last. To preside over their flocks was a heavy burden, and one 'The Ascended' had precious little experience in. Their own guardian had done little to lead them upon a just path. There were those who wished to offer their creations the freedom they had been denied, others who believed a measure of constraint was needed. Some sought to be revered as great rulers over their creations, whilst others wished only to guide them as gentle shepherds. Furthermore, without a common foe to face; there were divisions drawn based on the ethics and domains of 'The Ascended'. There were those who performed acts and gave rise to creations that others considered abhorrent. Between both factors, whatever council 'The Ascended' had managed to work through now stood divided. Lines in the sands were drawn, factions made, whilst others went rogue in spite of their own kin's protests.   War and upheaval were doomed to follow, with their creations as pawns upon the board. This put an end to the utopia the world knew. Clashes and rivalries between 'The Ascended' spelled calamity for the mortal races. Periods of divinely inspired warfare decorated the history of the world whilst deep within it 'The Ascended' debated with fervent passions that threatened to boil over. It was a dark time for the world, but worse still would follow.   For at least during these times of contention, the gods, as the mortals knew them, would still answer. Alas, there came a time when 'The Ascended' were no longer as consistent as they once were, and even that continued to diminish. What could first be written off as the whims of the gods soon fell prey to the anxieties of the world's populaces. Their "gods" had fallen silent; though in truth their eyes were distracted from their ailing flocks, and much more besides. Their debates had turned into arguments and intransigence; and all the while, the world fell into chaos.   It fell to the mortals they gave life to fight for themselves against a world that slowly grew untamed without the careful vigil of its "divine" overseers. Anxiety became fear, fear became despair and despondence; but persistence remained among many, and when denial could serve them no longer, defiance and contempt were swiftly adopted by the more zealous mortals. Centuries would pass, in which many of 'The Ascended' were inconsistent at best, and silent at worst; and what little they did offer proved insufficient for their increasingly resentful flocks.   In the end, centuries later, it culminated in a great host of the mortal races marching upon 'The Heart of The World' only to find the "gods" they believed to be invulnerable bastions of power to bleed just as they did. Overcome with a sense of righteous anger at such a great lie, they took their weapons to the divines who lay bleeding among their own halls; their final debate growing all too violent. The few that survived were ushered away by their faithful followers and those of the great host who could not bring themselves to condone such murderous vengeance, hidden well away from the calamity that came to be.   From the cadavers of the fallen 'Ascended' rose the first of 'The Spurned', twisted remnants of the slain, warped and overcome by their own worst elements. They turned upon mortal and kindred alike in a bloody bacchanal of carnage and brutality. Heroes fell to their wicked whims, and a great miasma known as 'The Shroud' rushed from 'The Heart of The World', like a rot seeping out from an infected wound. With 'The Fall of The Old Makers', the ruination of the world began in earnest. The few who survived held their tongues and hid with their 'Ascended', or were decried as heretical or mad by the masses until it was all too late. In time, 'The Sigil' would manifest, warped by the nature of the mortal races and those who created them into 'The Sigil of The Forsaken'. The curse of 'The Demiurge' reared its head. This stands to be the sole contingency by which salvation may be found in the face of 'The Spurned', but even it is not without insidious implications.   Slain by their own, 'The Ascended' fell from grace, and their fallen kin now march upon the world, bringing ruin to all they once remade. This is the reality of the world as it is now.   Thirty years have passed since that ruinous day. 'The Spurned' bring only desolation, the mortal races face oblivion and those 'Ascended' who survived hide away, licking grave wounds or seeking to outlast this calamity; this is a false hope.   And all the while, shackled and imprisoned, 'The Demiurge' watches, waits and bides their time. Their fate, just like that of 'The Spurned' and 'The Ascended' who remain, will be defined by those mortals who are cast out and 'Forsaken'.
