discussion developer feedback
Good day everyone!   As some of you may know I have started working on the new version of the Campaign Manager.   The first part of this upgrade is the introduction of DISCUSSION BOARDS with the capabilities to be used as a PbP (Play-by-post) system as well.   But this is only the beginning of a much larger overhaul. I have many ideas and specifications written but I would like for one last time before I jump into this to get your opinion.

List your thoughts

I would very much appreciate it if you can talk to me, in a list format about the things, you do not like, you like but I can do better or that are missing and you'd like to see.

Feel free to be as expansive as you wish, just keep it with TL;DRs and in a list format so I can read it easily.

Please try to be constructive, if something is shit, just explain why it is and how it can become better. Saying it's shit will not help me make it better :)

Points will not be important for this, feel free to use as many as you want

The Team's Response

Accepted and in progress in order to update the specification for the system   Thank you all for contributing to this!

The integration of "timers" and a time tracker, so that the GM can easily advance "time" in the game and have the timers automatically tick down. For example, if a player drinks a potion and the effects persist for 1 hour, as the GM I need a way to offload that from my own head so I don't have to remember when the effect is supposed to expire. This is the biggest pain point in my games, and it would be a huge leg up for the GM screen if I don't have to use a different tool somewhere else but can do it through the WA interface.   I have ideas of how to implement, but don't want to overload you here. feel free to hit me up @drzymalas on discord if you think other users would find this valuable and want to discuss.   Thank you very much for doing all of this!

I would like to see a player wiki. It would allow players to create articles separate from the world's that they could use to keep track of people, places, quests, etc...

TL;DR Annotation of articles during a session.   So I do all my (non-physical) preparation of campaigns and one shots in WA, but find myself making pen-and-paper notes during a session. One thing that would make WA preferable to pen-and-paper notes, would be an annotation system for existing articles.
  • I'm thinking of an "annotation mode" that you could go into while preparing a session or whilst being in session. The functions would be similar to that of a pdf viewer: you can highlight parts of text and add comments ("don't forget to emphasize this part" when preparing, or "players seemed very invested in this thing the npc said, make sure to reference it next time we see this npc").
  • This would work best if the annotation mode was be linked to your current campaign, such that switching between campaigns gives you the relevant notes only, and creating a new campaign lets you start with no notes. This allows you to have a different set of notes on the same article. (I'm running a 2-3 sessions one shot for several groups. Each group behaves differently, and it is starting to become hard to remember what happened with which group.)
  • An additional feature would be an overview of all notes from your campaign.
  • Perhaps the plot template could have an extra command that let's you create a tick box, which can be easily ticked off whilst in annotation mode. This gives you a good overview of what the pc's have already encountered (when they inevitably deviate from the expected chronological order of encounters).
  • Anyway, just some ideas. No worries if this was not what you had in mind. Thank you for all the hard work!

My main use for the campaign page is 1) Session reports and 2) the "View Campaign" page for my players as a default landing page; so most of my comments are around that.
  • It'd be nice if the page could be seen as part of the "World"- styled like the rest of the world. Not a huge thing but a nice-to-have
  • Having session reports listed on that landing page is great- it lets players remember wtf we did last time, and scroll back to see how long things have taken. But we have a lot of session reports; maybe we could load the first several and then as a user scrolls load more?
  • I love being able to set certain articles up in the landing page, as reminders and quest trackers. I wish I could add more nuance there, like "These are your ongoing quests" and "These are exterior world events effecting you (chased by the imperial guards/exterior deadlines etc" and "These are lore pages that IDK you might find particularly relevant hint hint".
  • I also use plots to keep track of various threads of the story. I do some planning with the plot threads, but much more tracking and updating developments based on player interaction. There's a "Primary Plot" field on session reports but I wish there was also secondary plots I could add to a session, and then when I looked at the Plot page, it could list out the related sessions. Often players are addressing/affecting multiple things in a plot as they go.

I would love to be able to assign quests to certain players as well as the whole group and as a player be able to add quests for myself. Sometimes, when a player has a dream, I only want them to see a quest that came out of that dream and not everyone else.

I like all the suggestions. I only use it for writing up session notes after a session. I haven't been able to dig deeper yet. My main suggestion is to keep in mind the many levels of uses and make quick access for people that may just use it for notes or other various levels. Anything to make it easy to expand using it would be helpful. Particularly any integration with more vtt's, dndbeyond, or the new dungeonfog features.

I've been struggling with this writeup because I can't figure out what could make me want to use the CM or DSTS. After discussing it with the TableTale Chapter (discussion started Aug 26th at 1900 UTC) we realized that basically no one in the chapter used the CM or DSTS.   What we realized is that we either need a fully featured VTT with battlemap support, or if we are playing in person we primarily use analog (pen & paper) methods. This means that this middle thing that is the current CM and DSTS don't get used by us. I hope you know who the target user is for the CM 2.   But what would I like to see related to playing ttrpgs adventures and campaigns?
    1. Better VTT integration. Currently you can only export articles to FoundryVTT (tables don't export, which is annoying, but really something for this place), and while that is enough for my current workflow I could see some of the features suggested here and the notebook becoming useful if they were integrated. Timelines are currently not at all in VTTs, so that integration could become a selling point.
    2. Private messages in Discussion Boards/PbP. I know this might already be on its way, but I think it's worth mentioning. Outside of the main campaign my players like to roleplay and we used heroes for that, until private messages went away, at which point the pbp chatter died out. This is because sometimes roleplaying does involve hidden information.
    3. Better support for preparing sessions for people who use a different workflow. I, for example, would like to see support for revelation- and clue lists as well as advesary rosters. Advesary rosters can currently be set up as tables, but they don't import into Foundry (see point 1) and they are not as flexible during play as I'd like.

Phew, I needed to think about this for a while. I love the campaign manager, but there are some things I would love to see... For me, there is one thing I would say is most important (for me personally). I would love to add house rules under a separate headline. Just like we can add important lore right now.

I would like to see the ability for one or two custom tab on the character sheet. People can use this for things relevant to their world but not covered by the default fields, or add something such an OOC section for online RPing or online campaigns. It doesn't have to be a free for all of free fields, but one or two would be excellent to cover some niche uses.

Some of these have been said before, and I'm adding my voice to them:   1) DM Ability to Edit Characters: I have players who, unfortunately, are not into managing their character bios or informaton in WA, and I have players that love the opportunity to do so. I'd like to be able to provide some basic information on the other characters, or at least update character portraits so when they are tagged in the timeline it doesn't show a placeholder image.   2) DM Only Articles: Because I encourage my players to write notes and articles about their characters, I would like them to be able to not accidentally come across a DM only one that is meant for my notes only.   3) Plots: I'd like plots to be separate from articles, as they may be like a list of small ideas that I can use in a quick fashion to orient myself without having to create an actual article. Also easier to hide then from players.   4) NPCs Not Tied to Articles: For my purposes, I don't necessarily want a full article for an NPC. I'd rather have a quick reference section to see some details and a portrait. I've started using my own articles to create a list of NPC characters the party have met, but this is still not an ideal way to display my intended information.

I am very excited about the attention to the Campaign Manager.
I have included several suggestions below, each header is a link to an article.

    01. Saved Dice (Link)

Hopefully this will be an amazing feature using an existing World Anvil feature as a solution.

    02. Player Character & Cast (Link)

Bringing all the character links together.

    03. Quests (Link)

The Arthurian quest for the Holy Grail or Frodo's quest to Mount Doom.

When using PBP, there should be an ability to imbed a die roll into the text and have it roll and display the result when the post is finalized. XdY+Z -> Display 13 -> Mouseover 13 = (1d20 = 8)+5

    1. NPCs are used directly from articles without going through re-entry. For example, "Add Existing: Type the name, and done. Maybe a note on the side on why they are part of this."

    2. There should be a separate list for players and another for characters. Players join WA and my world. Characters Join campaigns.

    3. I'd like to comment on a player's session notes. Sometimes with corrections to something they heard wrong, maybe just a compliment or expand on something.

    4. It has been months since I have had a new player, so this might be better now. However, many of my players had issues joining the campaign. The instructions need to be more precise, or joining needs to be simpler for players.

    5. There is so much wasted space with images on the stream pages. Big Scroll images need to be removed.

Two things. The ability to create GM only articles that do not appear for anyone in your world until you mark them public (Even editors). That way a GM can write up adventure articles, ahead of time and not spoint it for players that might be editors. 2, the ability to Copy a character (created by another player) From PC to NPC, and remove them from a party, for people who changed characters, but their old character remained a part of the story. This way the player can keep his character, but the campaign also has a record of what that character did. Meanwhile add the player's new character as a PC/party member.

I know that it will not be popular but wanted to at least put it out there. Having the ability to fully run a campaign with PCs created and maintained by the DM. Right now the entire campaign manager is a non-starter in my case because I have 1-2 people that want to see the information online and would really enjoy a lot of the features in the campaign manager but really don't want to either create a world anvil account or duplicate and maintain a second character sheet because they are already comfortable and prefer to use a character sheet in another application or via old-school pencil and paper.

A notes section that is always open and present, for quick in-session notes. Don't make this a NEW notes-taking option, but tie this into the actual notebook. If anything is entered into this notebook at all during the session, create a new entry under "Session Notes" in the Notebook, name the note "<Session Name> Session Notes" or something.   Allow the game master to edit player sheets.   "Targeted" handouts, so you can give a handout to individual players.

    1. Have notes that are hidden in the main view on World Anvil (via the little eyeball icon) be hidden when showing that Page to the Players. I love the Handouts screen but I often can't use it to send People to my players because I have logged details they haven't learned yet on those pages and they all show up on the Handouts page.   2. Allow Plots to be marked as Completed and hidden from the Plots list. My list has gotten long with things that are finished but I don't want to delete them. Removing them from the list has drawbacks because sometimes I do need to reference them, so this would also need a 'show completed plots' option for best results. Or even a collapsible separate list of the finished plots would work.   3. An option to 'archive' a Protagonist. There is a character in my campaign that is no longer an active character, so I would like it not to appear in the Protagonist list, but I also don't want to remove the character so I don't break links from early sessions, and also what if they come back?   4. GM should be able to make edits to character sheets.   5. A combat/initiative tracker would be great, and for the system I play I would need to be able to change initiative order at any time.

    1. I sometimes get into the Heroes tab and struggle to get back to the rest of World Anvil. 2. Search is slow on the page and difficult to do a quick reference. 3. NPC view on all pages, I pretty much run my session off a Plot article for that session, but having the ability to see and add NPC from the same page would keep me from flipping. 4. Quick Note section - I take notes on a notepad, but being able to drop little piece of info that are already captured, all while I'm running the session would help me out a ton. I could use that for things that don't persist like marching order or even notes of things I mentioned during the session. Naturally, if I can do this without leaving the plot screen, I'm the happiest. 5. Show to Players via Discord - Most of my players have too many screens up already so we don't use the player view, but it would be nice for me to be able to push content to our Discord server that's connected. Especially when I have some cool artwork to share.   I know some people will say Combat Tracker, but honestly I don't think that's the kind of thing I'd expect from you guys!

    TL;DR

    • Maps and Campaign Homepage: How do?
    • Handouts for Less Than Everybody
    • Current AV Gallery Makes Gamemaster Sad
    • The Supporting Cast tool is great! More like this, please!
        In no particular order:
    • At some point I connected a specific Map to my "The Bows of Purgatory Gulch" Campaign Page. It was more than a year ago. i do not know how I did it. I don't know how to do it with additional maps. I don't know how to undo it! We are less than 3 sessions away from being done with this Campaign -- KummerWolfe's character is still alive in his birthday present from 2020! -- and they are currently on a different map entirely. I wish that I could quickly and easily connect/disconnect Maps to the Campaign Homepage, to the Live Stream of the Session, and to the Handout.
    •
    • Speaking of the Handout and the session Live Stream: I need a way from the Storyteller's Screen to send a Handout to only some of my Players. That has to take into account that one of my Players is either Owner or Co-Owner of the World Anvil associated with the Campaign, and at least one other is an Editor. It has to take into account that I might not want to give this particular Handout to those two Players. And I need to be able to do it during a Session!
    •
    • Right now, I have the option to add Media to an Image Gallery and an Audio/Visual Collection. This is great!

      Alas:

      • I cannot trigger the file to present itself to all Players at once during a session. Ideally they would have something pop up in the Stream and be allowed to hit "Play" or "Show Image" as soon as they have put down their beverages. But I do not want bored or curious Players to go through every file I have listed and spoil the coming surprises in the first three minutes of the adventure.
      • I cannot add a single file from Soundcloud to this list and not have it start playing every other file I ever made on Soundcloud to a Player with an Apple device. Gee thanks, Soundcloud! I don't know if I also have this problem with YouTube, because I have only added 1 file from YouTube to my Audio/Visual Collection for this Campaign and that particular Player has never poked at it. Check with Kummer Wolfe on this one -- he uses YouTube in our Superhero campaign and has the same Apple Devices Only member of the Player group.
      • And anyway, some of my Players have never found the Library or the Media or any of the rest of this. If they do not see it handy on the Stream during a session, and I do not hand them a direct link in Discord and say "click this now, yes I mean you", they think that to explore elsewhere is to risk learning things their characters ought not know. (sigh) At this point, while I like the idea of having an Image Gallery and an Audio/Visual Collection, it has not turned out to be a good use of the Campaign Manager as it currently is. I don't know how to fix "make Players click on Media" from within the Campaign Manager but I suspect it involves making the Library and the Campaign Manager prominently accessible to the Player's view of the Stream. Somehow.

Fixing the above sub-points may be more work than it seems worth doing, in which case "just dump the Image Gallery and A/V Collection" might be the best plan. We can always put these things on their own little articles, right? Even in that case, though, I still need to be able to set up some articles in the Campaign Manager ahead of time so that during a session, I can share with specific Players or with the whole Party at once when the right moment arrives.

    •
    • You know that great tool for making Supporting Cast characters quickly?

      I love it!

I have no complaints about thisThis thing is grand. I wish I could attach a pre-existing statblock during Quick Creation, but ehh. Once I have used Quick Create, it isn't much more work to then click the NPC on my list and hit "Edit".

May I have something like this for those Items that might wind up in the clutches of the Party?

Complete with the list access from the left sidebar? And quick creation?

Same again, this time for Quests?

[1] Players should be able to open a journal and add to it while the session is active. Right now, they have to leave the session to write in the character journal   [2] Quests: allow a DM to make a quest and assign it to party or a player no matter if the session is active or not. This will help with character subplot assignment and tracking.   [3] Ability to mark a campaign as "finished", and have that indicated visually as a reminder to player and DM when looking at the world. Maybe a check mark? the word 'finished'?   [4] If a campaign is "finished" allow characters in that campaign to join another one. Right now, they have to leave the campaign to join the new one and it is breaking links in session reports and character articles in the world.   [5] Ability to customize the dice roller for the game system. Tales of Justice uses a 2d10 and nothing else. It would be nice to be able to indicate to the dice roller : 'for this campaign, only show the d10' or 'for this campaign, when the d10 is clicked, roll 2d10'   [6] ONLY WHILE THE SESSION IS ACTIVE...
  • add the ability for the game master to send a public or private message to one of the characters playing in session, to the whole party of characters, or for the characters to send a message to the DM.
  • [7] Add a customizable "Combat Round or Turn Tracker": Players should be able to add their initiative roll next to their character name. The DM should have:
  • a toggle to start tracking a combat round, with option location for a title to better organize what the combat is for.
  • a switch to indicate which character's turn it is ( 1 .. n as more than one character may have the same initiative )
  • a switch to end that turn, which opens new row with character names and locations for initiative numbers.
  • a toggle to close that moment of combat tracking
  • [8] Add a toggle to indicate if a dice roll is public or hidden. Some game systems have the DM make hidden dice rolls.   [9] Add a tab / entry under Media for "Maps"
  • 1..n maps should be allowed for use during session in case the group of characters go in two different directions.
  • [10] Allow NPC selection from the world, or import from other campaigns to streamline prep. Right now I have to remake already existing NPCs that are recurring but do not travel with the characters, which is cumbersome.   [11] Allow #10 to be done in session as well.

These are my suggestions! The first sentence in each point is the tl;dr:
  • Encounter manager. I know there are already dedicated sites for it, but having it integrated with my WA statblocks/party would be great.
  • Easier player joining workflow (I think that's already in your list).
  • Faster loading time in the DSTS library. I tried looking up an article in the DSTS, it took almost 10 seconds to load. I don't have the fastest network speed, but the explorer is much faster (less than 1 second). A solution could be replacing the Library by an Explorer with an option to "favorite" or "pin" articles (similar to the very useful "Add to Library" button in the current DSTS).
  • Floating widget in the DSTS? That just occurred to me, but having a widget similar to the Alt+Enter previewer but with the different DSTS tabs would be great to avoid having to switch between all the tabs all the time. For example, I'm always taking notes in the Notebook, so having that as a widget that can be opened and closed without having to move away from the Library would be amazing.
  • Customizable tab in the DSTS. Just a dedicated blank tab with a textbox that you can edit with BBCode and view it as a formatted text during the session. Useful to add your own "sticky notes" to the GM screen.

TL;DR: 1. Access to players' character sheet for GM 2. Quicker access to group quests, assets etc. 3. Way to pin notes to the storyteller's screen like to a GM screen   1. A a GM, I would like to be able to make changes in players' character sheets. Might be nice to prompt players for "Allow GM access to sheet?" or something like that. This would be particularly great for groups who stream their campaigns and use WorldAnvil Sheets mostly to provide information for the audience.   2. I would love to have "Quests", "Assets&Equipment" and "Settings" for a group accessible from the "Groups" screen without having to click on "edit group" first. Most campaigns have only one group, so maybe the groups screen should be optional and quests, assets etc. should be included in the main menu otherwise?   3. A GM screen is most useful to me if there are notes on rules pinned all over the inside of it. I would love to be able to do that with the storyteller's screen. Maybe BBCode using multiple columns could be useful there.

As an author I might be misunderstanding the systems, but an inventory with a basic humanoid outlay with relevant sections highlightable/assignable would be massively helpful. For example, a section that I could create a sword in, despite my utter lack of coding skills, so a section I could write a description, with a symbol, and then be able to assign it to 'right hand' and have it pop up with a character sheet and assigned to a right hand slot? The same for arms and armor, consumables, etc?

.) Text formatting options for session descriptions. .) points mentioned by tyyni   Elaboration: I am a LARP organizer and use the campaign for the LARP campaign running in my world. So I use the sessions to announce the next LARP and also post the link to the application form and list a lot of relevant information people need to know before the apply for the LARP. So having the option of formatting the text would help to make it more readable.

    1. Most of my players and my co-GM have trouble with the navigation 1a. Navigation: Finding quests 1b. Finding stream notes from a previous session   2. Quests: It would be nice to be able to sort the quests (by dragging) 3. Quests: As a gm, i wish to be able to create a personal quest for my player and assign it to them   3. the VSTS: the ability to show a map (large), and the die roller close to it 4. Players being able to track their temporary things themselves (hit points, etc) and saving it (less admin for the GM) 5. Npc's: if you have many, it becomes difficult to structure them 6. TLDR - Creating session reports in the vsts - When in the vsts you can make notes as a Storyteller. However, my co-gm can see all of my notes, including the ones made as a player in another campaign. I would like to be able to create the session report directly from the vsts without it being notes.   If anything is unclear (or already exists), I'm sorry. I'll be available for questions about it on the discord

Encounters!!!! An easy way to plan out encounters for my plots would be huge and make planning for me easier. And let me grab the Stat sheets faster.   Also, may involve more than the site but a mobile app version of just the campaign so that players have access to the campaign features on their phones.
